I have been fortunate enough to watch all the Shaft series as youth. Brother John Shaft is the man. RIP Brother Gordon Parks, Brother Levi Stubbs, Brother Larry Payton and Brother Obie Benson

I am 60 . I saw a few of the premiere episodes as a youth in Indiana , although I do not reme.ber them . I do remember brief segments . I watched them on a small television in my bedroom , we were upper middle-class white folks . My father joined in local civil rights activity in the 1970s . RIP , MR. RICHARD ROUNDTREE , you are an American hero , greatly revered by many surviving Americans of my age group .

I watched this sequence on VHS a million times because of the fantastic music. The title song 'Are You Man Enough', performed by the Four Tops was written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter who also wrote and produced the Four Tops' great 1972 album 'Keeper Of The Castle'. They gave a very modern funky sound to the Motown legends.
@inthezone41234 жыл бұрын
Kai, this tune is on the Main Street People album. Keeper of the Castle is also marvelous, especially if you can listen to it in quadraphonic sound. I really like the first two Shaft films, but for me this one takes a dive after he leaves the park. The theme song is the highlight of the film.

Yes all I listen to. Best recording. 60's was simple music with poor recordings and 80's was getting simple with a lot of digital sounds in music.

TCM does a decent job of running '70's era blaxploitation films. You can catch this an many others late night weekends.

Interesting tie-in that the first Shaft movies' entire soundtrack was released in Quadraphonic sound, and the title track here "Are You Man Enough" was also released in Quad on the Four Tops' album "Main Street People". Although there next album "Meeting of the Minds" was also released in Quad, it had a song I wished had been used in a Shaft movie, titled "One Chain don't make no prison".

We just lost ShihanTaky Kubota (Who choreographed the fight scenes and stick fights of this movie. His name is on the opening credits) last month. He was also a teacher of mine. Amazing man and mentor. Rip Kubota Shihan and thank you for giving us great Martial Arts wisdom and entertainment.

Fun fact: Did you know this movie was originally supposed to be called..SHAFT IN THE ORIENT or SHAFT IN ASIA and BRUCE LEE had been casted to Co Star in it as either the heavy (Main Villian) or as an undercover agent whom hires Shaft to come to Hong Kong to help destroy a slavery ring. Some reason or another the idea was pitched that it should be done in Africa, for the simple fact that Hong Kong and Japan was starting to become overused for Action films, especially those with Foreign (Westerner Leads). Stirling Silliphant (Who wrote the film, but was also a student of Bruce) agreed abd re wrote the film. Bruce still wanted to be a Co star in it, feeling it would hopefully launch an international partnership with Africa, Hong Kong and the USA, and hopefully make Africa a new hotbed to do Martial Arts films. Unfortunately Bruce died just before the plans were finalized, which is why a certain character was added to replace Bruce's would have been character. How do I know this? I heard it from those who were on the inside, who were there when all this happened. The now late Frank McCrae and Richard Roundtree themselves. Told me the exact same story one year apart.
