Greg was a very patient and nice guy when I bought a signed picture from him at Wizard World in 2010. I started having a bit of a fanboy moment telling him about watching wrestling with my father and instead of trying to wrap things up quickly he asked if I wanted the signature to include a shoutout to my dad. Glad to see he’s still doing his thing 👌

I watch a lot of the mafia related uploads and one of thee old timers that lived to be I believe 103 who served a 50 year bid in prison named Sonny Franchese he would never bad mouth anyone not even his enemies, they'd ask him so what was so and so like? He'd respond oh a good man great family guy. Is it true so and so made millions of dollars? I'm not sure I do not know that to be true. LoL!

@@jeffdemarcus160 True. The Hammer was born 20 September 1951....this is from wiki; The first pro wrestling studio television show was taped on December 18, 1942 at WRBG-TV in Schenectady, New York, at a time when few Americans owned television sets. The earliest successful recurring wrestling program was Hollywood Wrestling in Los Angeles, which debuted on KTLA in 1947 and was syndicated in numerous U.S. cities by 1952.

As much as I hate to say it, this is like interviewing those old WW2 vets before they pass on. With the number of wrestlers from the 80s and 90s who are no longer with us and dying far too soon, these old warriors of the ring like Greg have such a valuable story to tell about an important part of Americana. I really appreciate the time he's spent recording his thoughts.

My only issue with Piper was during his WWF run he only lost once cleanly, his other losses were either DQ or countout. WCW he was the same, he had an agreement with Hogan that he gets the wins but Hogan keeps the belt. The only person Piper put over was his cousin Bret Hart.
@darylabrams2
@darylabrams2 2 жыл бұрын
Piper would lose but he wouldn't allow himself to be pinned on TV. He was OK with losing at shows where only the crowd in the arena saw the match. Roddy didn't want to be one of the heels that hogan would beat and then move on to the next guy. Hogan has even said piper took care of himself first. That was the nature of the business then. Hogan did it too. I don't blame anyone for protecting themselves and trying to make the most money they can make.

I know it has been said a million times, but that Starrcade 83 match is such a masterpiece. Personally I first saw that dog collar fight on the "Greatest stars of the 80's" dvd set produced by WWE in 2005, and I just had to watch it 2-3 times that day, I was just blown away by the storytelling and the brutality of it. 👍

Piper put himself through so much punishment to sell his matches. In the end it cost him his health and maybe his life (like many others) he had a hip replacement too. I remember my father commenting to my uncle when my uncle said it was fake. "Staged or not they are putting their bodies through hell. Pro athletes from other sports don't put themselves through that" years later the fatalities piled up as famous wrestler after famous wrestler died at a young age, and those who didn't were crippled in one way or the other.

The Hammer is still one of the hardest working wrestlers ever to have been in the ring!! Without him so many people never would have got over. He gave legitimacy to the people that he got over and made the job guys have a respect by the fans. He was too much man and not pretty boy enough to run baby face championships. They don’t have the matches like his anymore. Hour long match at a house show? EPIC!!!

But they also had grudge match were 2 wrestlers had real beef they’d let them go at it in the ring but once they got there angry out they’d have to squash it after. He said there were wrestlers back then that got fired because they could squash things even after.

Id like to say its amazing to hear your take on real wrestling and how you and your buddies would go off chemistry just like musicians do, and would slightly touch up on things, and the hot spots so nobody will get hurt and still make it look like it was done on the spot. I wished wrestling was still this way,but it isnt and I think thats why I don't like it as much is its lost its touch and lost the advice of Legends such as yourself, I never knew who you were, im 29 and now that I do , totally one of my favorites and would love to see you,not wrestling, but involved in wrestling uninvolved with wwf/wwe. Thank you for giving us your time and making me have so much respect for you, compared to me just knowing of you, im going to watch alot of your matches and would love for you to talk about other wrestlers and back in the day the inventive ways things were done in those days. You are now one of my favorites, you don't bullshit, tell it like it is and was, and your happy for what you have done and what you are willing to do to sell the show.

I fondly remember watching wrestling with my sainted mother starting in the 1970's❤ Rowdy was her favorite wrestller, and the Hammer seemed to be in every match. Great performer, and in my view, underrated. Thank-you John.......unforgettable performances down the line. My folks had many of the wrestlers stay at their motel in the day....those were the days, much gratitude ❤
