Agree with his synopsis on the Boston crowd. In Sammartino’s book, he talked about one match he had with Waldo Von Erich in the Boston Garden where a size C battery was thrown from the rafters by a fan. He said it landed in the ring during the match then bounced to the side & he wondered what would have happened had it hit one of them. During the baseball games in Fenway fans would also throw batteries at the visiting players in the outfield. This was in the 70’s

A quick Greg Valentine story: First, he was my favorite wrestler back in the day (I usually liked the heals) Saw him and Brutus Beefcake wrestle a tag match (against The British Bulldogs I think it was) in Detroit around 1985, at the Joe Louis Arena. We knew which lot the wrestlers parked their cars in, so we waited in the hallway near that lot's exit. After a few minutes, I saw Valentine, Beefcake and Valentine's wife walk down the hallway, and then disappeared around a corner. After a couple of more minutes, we decided to wait IN the parking lot for the wrestlers to come out. It was winter, so it was cold, and after waiting a few minutes leaning up against one of the parked cars, trying to block the cold wind blowing in from the Detroit River, out comes Valentine, his wife and Beefcake - wearing a full length men's fur coat. They walked in our direction and right up to us, and, would't you know it, we're leaning on Valentine's rental car! Beefcake kind of gave me a LOOK, and Valentine stopped in front of me, then laughed and said "thanks for keeping my car warm". Brutus laughed, and I moved away so they could open the door and get in. I was so surprised that he was talking to me, and that I was leaning on HIS car, I forgot to ask for an autograph. Lol! He was really a nice guy, and his hot wife gave us a smile as they drove away. Now the Joe Louis Arena is gone. Miss the old days.

I saw a lot of matches, as a teen in the 80s at the Boston Garden. When the wrestlers would enter the building, they would walk through a lane made by iron rails, right through the crowd to get to the locker room. As a young fan I loved it. As an adult, looking back, I think it was a really bad setup for the wrestlers.
@LuckyStrike013 жыл бұрын
Yeah it probably sucked for them. I remember as a kid being able to talk to the wrestlers on their way back to the locker room inside, you could try to hit them up for autographs but the heels usually were busy getting thru the crowd and by the time they saw us kids the locker room was a beacon of hope and they told us to screw. Faces if you were lucky would stop but not usually. Beefcakes first wife was from my town and he lived there for a while and was working at the MBTA doing coke and someone saw the powder and he didn’t say it was his and they cleared out the station in fear of anthrax. I think it was one of the old token booths. My boss when I was a teen and early 20s was friends with his wife and she would come by every so often, occasionally he would stop by.

Before WWF moved shows to the Richfield (OH) Coliseum, the company's venue was old Public Hall in downtown Cleveland -- which had balcony seating and temporary floor seats (metal folding chairs) around the ring......and irate fans would occasionally launch cups of drinks that would mostly drench folks and not the heel(s) they were hating.

His Dad was the man as far as I'm concerned. I've never understood why his Dad never got a world title run, I mean Vince's Dad as well as the NWA put their world titles on Buddy Rogers for God's sake, & Johnny was just as good as Buddy, if not a little better.

Lifelong Bostonian here. My mother's uncle Pat (from Ireland) lived in Boston and used to go the the WWE matches every month held at the old Boston Garden and claimed he was there when Blackjack Mulligan was stabbed. Bostonians are miserable as part of the culture, nothing to do with the weather. I was at a Bruins game once and overheard two security guards talking bout how they were going to work the upcoming WWE matches and what they were going to wear for protection from the fans. This included a cup, inline skating elbow and kneepads, and a mouth guard. As Rodney Dangerfield used to say 'a tough crowd, I tell ya'.

In the crowd, I witnessed a huge brawl between ton of Guys some Asians dressed like Fuji and Saito and some Black Guys dressed like Atlas and Johnson, just beating the Crap out of each other. Just an out and out Brawl. There was like 40 of em. Pretty Hairy for like 5 minutes. Boston Cops everywhere. Worth the 10 bucks I paid at the door. Wrestling at the Gahden in the late 70s early 80s was the best. Got to see Andre The Giant. In Person he’s mega Huge. That was the best wrestling. Period. I miss those days.
