Robert is king, if only he could remember who of. The long summer reign of our summer king masks a sweet rot beneath, one not even the virtue of Ned Stark could cancel out. Robert is also exploding with Cernunno-symbolism - he's feeling horny, don't you know - so we'll go hunting the white stag with ole Bobby B and see what turns up.

One of the main themes running throughout ASOIAF is "everything has a season." An endless Summer is unsustainable & will turn into drought. The seasons must change. Kings & nations are ephemeral but The Land endures. Robert & Ned are very Jupiter & Saturn analogous in astrological symbolism

Massive ending symbolism in the whole Robert going to the king of winter to hand over the rule. A passing of the torch to winter. Hearkening back to the poem the series is inspired by.

It really interesting how important Jon Arryn was in events and he died off page. Wonder if anything will happen with him, flash backs with him,Ned and Rob. Jon Arryn was so crucial in the rebellion and really activated it and interesting that Jon was called Jon, maybe even named after Jon Arryn

Ned named his two eldest sons for the two most important men in his life: Jon Arryn and Robert. (Robb obviously being a variation on Robert). So Jon Snow is definitely named for Arryn.

I always feel bad for Robert, Circe, Raghar, and Lyanna. They were cosmically reamed in the love department. Lyanna and Raghar both die because they were together; Lyanna dies because Raghar knocks her up and Raghar dies because Lyanna was promised to Robert. Their deaths shattered both Circe and Robert. Circe had adored Raghar, and thought him as ideal husband material; he was the one she probably compared all her suitors to. Robert killed Raghar, Circe is now expected to marry someone who murdered the man she idolized. Not to mention that he calls her a dead womans name the first time the deed was done. Robert on the other will eternally feel like a failure, for killing the "bad guy" and not saving his maiden. Then enters into a marriage with a woman who already resents him for killing a man, who he views as a villain. People also seem to forget that Robert never had time to grieve properly for Lyanna. When he marries Circe, he mostly likely got drunk because he felt like he was betraying Lyanna, and in his drunken grief he spoke the name of the maiden he failed to save. No matter how you look at it no one faired well in this situation, either they died or were warped emotionally which affected them for life. It's really sad when you think about it.

I always saw Robert as an obsessive. Lyanna was the one woman who didn't want the D, so naturally he took it as a challenge. That conquest was denied him. If you notice, Robert was only vaguely angered over Rickard and Brandon's deaths, but he was PISSED at Rhaegar. Robert and Lyanna had met each other all of twice at that point, but Robert claimed to love her? While sleeping with how many women during the Rebellion? I have to wonder, was there a parlay the day before the Battle of the Ruby Ford? I'm doubting it really, and I'd bet it had something to do with Robert.

@CatotheE

@@jacobenke7936 Parlay? Rhaegar chose death. Lyanna was 14 and betrothed already. Aerys was burning men alive. Even Ned seems to think killing Rhaegar was justified since he compares Robert killing Rhaegar to him hypothetically smashing Tywin. Robert literally did nothing wrong until after he became the king and pardoned the Lannisters.
@yomamma.ismydaddy216
@yomamma.ismydaddy216 2 ай бұрын
@@jacobenke7936I think a big part of why Robert felt so strongly towards Lyanna is because of his close relationship/love for Ned. He probably fundamentally thought of Lyanna as family since Ned was his family and she was Ned’s family. Ties like that can create a strong and special love, that doesn’t mean it can’t also be misguided in some aspects tho

I wonder if it's an interesting point to consider how abdication or co-rulership is never considered for Robert. What stopped him assigning a young Joffrey a solid Regent, and retiring to a life of drunkeness and revelery? Maybe Joffrey could have learned something from a firm hand guiding him through real responsibilities; or maybe he would have been outed as terrible, and quietly replaced by Tommen. Although, if we dwell too long on 'what ifs' we are destined to heartbreak. What if Ned still lived.

In the first book Robert tells Ned (or maybe he just thinks it in his thoughts, I forget exactly) that the thing that is stopping him from abandoning his kingship and going to bravos to become a sell sword is the thought of Joffrey on the throne with cerise whispering in his ear. lol

I just adore how much real world mythology is masterfully weaved into ASOIAF. Lighting struck towers! Hammers & thunder! Odin & Yggdrasil! Prometheus & the fire of the gods! Lots of myths peppered throughout but undoubtedly the Norse elements are strongest. So yeah massively intrigued by the notion of any Loki archetypes! He just so fascinating. A trickster figure to be sure & very similar to Prometheus in going from a beloved friend to the Lighting god before being punished for crossing the line. But it's the line crossed that's so fascinating. The mistletoe dagger brought him up to the line but it was the scouring of the Gods as a whole that pushed him over - not the murder of a beloved god but holding up a mirror to their own flaws & mistakes. Because in the majority of myths about Loki he's that spark of chaotic genius that bails out the gods constantly yet is fated to be a key element in their demise; both literally by captaining the ship of damned souls to Ragnarok but also before as father to 3 of the major Ragnarok figures - Fender, Jormungandr & Hel. No way GRRM hasn't drawn on this great nuanced, grey character 😁 xx

30:13 I think some times of Stannis as a stag that has shed his horns, as they do in winter . I also wonder some times why Robert never gave Ned the North as a separate kingdom. I know the example it sets for other kingdoms, but Ned was ALWAYS faithful to Robert, his fealty never in question. They grew up together, so Robert would know that the north while large is not the most productive for food production, nor does anyone ever seem to want to go there willingly from any other kingdom. 1:19:19 I wish I could make the argument that Robert is so smart the seeming dismissiveness of who his pages are is a joke

I do like the subtle stuff they do in stories that fill background in. Even the show had that bit before Lady killed we see Robert belittle , mock and humiliate Joffrey in front of everyone by berating him for losing to a girl even though it was Arya. You also see the gap between South and North when Robert quickly wants to kill Dire wolf and says children shouldnt have dire wolves & Cersei joy in call for killing dire Wolf - both know full well the importance of Dire Wolves to the North, Starks and put it below the South.

02:05:08 Varys does not want what's best for the realm despite saying so. He wants to put his Blackfyre on the throne . He couldn't do so in a unified Westeros under a widely accepted king with a watertight claim to the throne as Rhaegar would have been. So he planted dissent. He further fed the paranoia of already crazy Aerys. He warned him of Rhaegar's potential coup. He didn't protect or inform Robert of the many plots against him. He misled Ned as much as Littlefinger did to remove him from the equation. Every step of the way, Varys divided unified Westeros and facilitated war, death, poverty and division, removing smart and capable political figures from the board to ensure that the people would have none to look to but Faegon when he conveniently arrived.

Great job today, @lucifermeanslightbringer. I know how hard doing voices are and you definitely need a voice modulator(they keep calling them "changers" nowadays). Presets for different voices at the press of a button.

So Elric was brought up in this video. I did a dig a few months back as I wanted to get into Elric and read the original copies found in Science Fantasy. Luckily enough The Internet Archive had all but two issues. I figured I would post my findings here for anyone interested. This link can give you more general info. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elric_of_Melnibon%C3%A9 *This is in order of original publishing.* 1. "The Dreaming City" (Science Fantasy No. 47, June 1961) archive.org/details/Science_Fantasy_47v16_1961-06-07 2. "While the Gods Laugh" (Science Fantasy No. 49, October 1961) (archive.org/details/Science_Fantasy_v17n49_1961-10_dtsg0318/page/n3/mode/2up) 3. "The Stealer of Souls" (Science Fantasy No. 51, February 1962) (archive.org/details/science-fantasy-51-1962-02/page/2/mode/2up) 4. "Kings in Darkness" (Science Fantasy No. 54, August 1962) (archive.org/details/Science_Fantasy_v18n54_1962-08_Bogof39-slpn/page/n1/mode/2up) 5. "The Flame Bringers" (Science Fantasy No. 55, October 1962); retitled "The Caravan of Forgotten Dreams" in some later collections. (archive.org/details/Science_Fantasy_55v19_1962-10/page/n41/mode/2up) 6. "To Rescue Tanelorn ..." (Science Fantasy No. 56, December 1962) (archive.org/details/Science_Fantasy_56v19_1962-12/page/n55/mode/2up) 7. "Dead God's Homecoming" (Science Fantasy No. 59, June 1963) (Not on the archive, I looked for many hours) 8. "Black Sword's Brothers" (Science Fantasy No. 61, October 1963) (Not on the archive, I looked for many hours) 9. "Sad Giant's Shield" (Science Fantasy No. 63, February 1964) (archive.org/details/Science_Fantasy_v21n63_1964-02_Bogof39-slpn/page/n1/mode/2up) 10. "Doomed Lord's Passing" (Science Fantasy No. 64, April 1964) (archive.org/details/Science_Fantasy_v22n64_1964-04_Bogof39-slpn/page/n1/mode/2up) Shout out to Sketch The Cow who uploaded most if not all of these to the Pulp Magazine Archive on the Internet Archive. If anyone has the original Science Fantasy print of "Dead God's Homecoming" or "Black Sword's Brothers" do all sword and sorcery fans a solid and upload it if possible. These science fantasy issues are iconic as Moorcock inspired many modern-day giants in the fantasy genre. These yellowed pages are where the story began.

Robert is quite the interesting character and one I really like. He's not the best king nor is he the worst or most cruel. He's just a dude suffering from what seems to be ptsd who absolutely hates being King, hates the snakes around him, and hates his cruel heir but since being a good soldier is really all knows he doesn't how to solve any of these issues so he turns to drinking to numb the pain. I do love the small moments when he's with Ned where a lot of the baggage seems to melt, which to me shows how comfortable and at ease he is when around Ned, and the jokes he tells are quite funny imo. In another time he would've been the jovial, life of the party guy at some frat that gets everyone hyped. As an aside, do you know why Joffrey has so much respect for Robert? Surely he knows he's not actually his father and on top of that Robert hated Joffrey because of how cruel he was so it's always puzzled me why Joffrey looks up to him so much

Its hilarious someone accused Ned of not being interested in anything below the neck. When Cat seems to indicate they've got a really healthy sexual relationship. Lol I know they were talking about the lands but its still funny.

Their relationship is not healthy, read the sex scene that wasn't in the first book. I had to read it twice to understand that they'd been having sex. Cat is thinking about... w/e crosses her mind, and basically treating Ned like a sperm donor.

I think Bobby B represents what happens when political power is won through physical dominance, just as Aerys represents what happens when power is inherited through bloodlines, particularly insular bloodlines. I think both are a good case for democracy and why the democratic process needs to be protected and participated in

I just asked myself, wha did Robbert obcess about Lyanna, we where never told, where we? Usualy there is at least one moment as an inciting incedent. We know he did not knew her, so it was not her personality, and he lusts after pretty much every woman he encounters . . . So what made her special? After all the wierd subtext comments lml made I think it was not about Lyanna herself, but Ned. No I do not mean to say he actualy wanted to marry Ned and took Lyanna instead, it is pretty clear he is tragicly devoted to the idea of Lyanna, if not her real person, but thatmwhat makes her desireable is her beeing related to Ned. It is made clear again and again, that Ned is Roberts closest family but that they cause of their duitys do not have the chance to stay togeather. Lyanna and Ned look extreamly similar, marryingmhis sister is possible the only way, to at least somewhat keep his chosen brother at his side. Lyanna is special due to her association with Ned. An absolutly breathtakeingly beautiful women he imagine to have all the good qualities of his best friend, a part of him he can keep forever at his side and in no position to oppose him like Ned does from time to time. Mild mannered, honest to a fault and loyal to the bone, feeling like he knowes her forever but in a very nice package . . . . It is wierd, but I always felt, that Robert is quite a lonely character I find it hard to put my thought in to words, I have to think this over again for some time . . . But maybe you get where I am going. It is the only thing that makes sense to me considering the information we where given on their match.

Nobody tortures animals bc of bad parenting. For example Tommen and Myrcella did not behave like Joffrey. People talk about Targaryens "madness" bc of incest. Maybe Joffrey was born psychopathic as a result of incest. What do you think?
