They were so hot going into the 90s. 1988-90 (until Brent Mydland died) was a peak period for them on stage.

Difficult to say this is the best "Loser" of all time. Every rendition Jerry did of any song has its nuances that were unique to each performance. I've seen tens of "Losers" in the late 70's to mid 80's that were better than this rendition, Englishtown in 77 for one, mainly because Jerry's voice was in better shape. Having said that, it's just great that so many performances are available to listen to and still enjoy today.

Never saw a Loser I didn't love.... Right up to the bitter end..... And while his voice was better in the 70's [loved everything about Englishtown except the traffic!!], the ragged edge of later years made me feel like it was coming from a deeper place.... Which takes me back to my original statement.... never saw a Loser I didn't love....

I think there’s something about Jerry grown up and his voice shrivel, it’s almost as if he starts to buy into the loser rather and sing about it. After years of doing this day in day out probs started to feel like the character in the song

For everyone - enjoy: If I had a gun for every ace I have drawn I could arm a town the size of Abilene Don't you push me baby, because I'm moaning low And you know I'm only in it for the gold All that I am asking for is ten gold dollars And I could pay you back with one good hand You can look around about the wide world over And you'll never find another honest man Last fair deal in the country, sweet Suzie Last fair deal in the town Put your gold money where your love is baby Before you let my deal go down Don't you push me baby, cause I'm moaning low Well I know a little something you won't ever know Don't you touch hard liquor, just a cup of cold coffee Gotta get up in the morning and go Everybody's breaking and drinking that wine I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines Come to daddy on the inside straight Well I've got no chance of losing this time But I've got no chance of losing this time I've got no chance of losing this time Last fair deal in the country Last fair deal in the town Put your gold money where your love is baby Before you let my deal go down, go down Everybody's breaking and drinking that wine I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines Come to daddy on the inside straight Well, I've got no chance of losing this time But I've got no chance of losing this time I've got no chance of losing this time! RIP, Jerry! Hope to see you on the other side......

I know I'm responding to a five year old comment here ... but that's a pretty standard arrangement of this song. I'm actually unaware of versions where they don't take the solo through the verse structure twice.

Dead fans often refer to this as the best 'Loser' ever because it gets a heavy duty treatment here, with blazing fills in the solo that ordinarily weren't played. If you prefer a more plaintive version, however, you'd probably cast a different vote. Oddly, this concert was released as "Dozin' at the Nick' and for some reason this song was left out. Nonetheless, I think we can all agree old Jerry's really feelin' it...
@DennisCampbell7777 жыл бұрын
I had an interesting conversation with Dick Latvala about the fact that this Loser didn't make the cut. However it was finally officially released by the band in 2012 on Spring 1990, So Glad You Made It.

Not a critism but an observation; Does it soumd like a confusing around 6.59 on this song? Their crazy out of synch on this but maybe its on purpose to mess with those who are high. It sounds like on song layerd on top of another song almost.

That's what some people do : they can be very judgemental . I read an article by Carlos Santana in Rolling Stone . He reminisced how Jerry agreed to play backup for him live . Jerry PERFECTLY adopted his style to support Santana 's guitar playing style - with a soft grin and a nod back to Carlos . That was also the late Jerry Garcia 's gift : he got along with and accommodated almost ANYONE.

How on earth did this get left off of Dozin'? Especially with all of the shit they put at the end of disc three. And two versions of "space." ARGH. Fantastic rendition of this tune, which was also impressively performed only eight days before on March 16 1990.
