About a year ago, I was given a funny little red eared slider named Terrence by a friend of mine who was relocating for collage. Unfortunately, Terrence wasn't in great shape. His enclosure was small and he was very obviously suffering from malnutrition. He was reportedly about 5 years old, but I never would have guessed it by his size. My little buddy will always be kind of small and have a funny shell, but I don't mind, he's a joy to have around. My dream is to build him a sun room with a turtle pond, natural light and plenty of swimming space, but for now we make do with the largest enclosure I could afford and plenty of good food.

+Dangerously Caffeinated my friend had two red eared sliders and kept them in a smaller tank for about a year and a half, and didn't feed them quite enough. She got them a bigger tank and fed them more frequently and they grew rapidly. Before she got the new tank there were smaller than the palm of my hand, after the got their new environment they became way bigger than my hand. It was pretty crazy how much of a difference space made for them.

I'm currently working at a library and we recently had a lady in to present animals to the children in a way like this. But she had a tortoise and I saw that he had a pyramided shell and that made me feel sad. That experience made me come back to watch this video, though, to remind myself of the reasons why it happens.

I think that getting turtles to mate is so difficult that it really is no worry to keep them from mating. Fortunately, AFAIK, the only ways to castrate a tortoise are so barbaric and in humane that I doubt the AW crew will employ them.

Heya, I was wondering what Animal Wonders' work dynamic is with Hank. I've seen you appear regularly in SciShow and I've noticed he's mentioned as Executive Producer at the end of your videos. Besides your appearances in SciShow, what makes up your work relationship with Hank Green? I assume him being your EP has to do with his experience on KZbin and such, but how does your work relationship branch out? Were you friends/acquaintances first or meet through work? An answer would be much appreciated, or perhaps a question for your next ask jessi vid?^^ As always, thank you immensely for showing the world how pleasurable and utterly possible human/animal interactions can be, as well as sustained long-term friendships!

Is the pyramiding shell (itself) a bad thing for Titus? Or is it just a symptom of other negative affects?
@FlyKiwi8 жыл бұрын
Apart from the physical, are there other negative effects from pyramiding? Does it cause the animal pain or weaken their shell? I grew up with red ear slider turtles and I've always been fascinated by animals with shells.
@ShadeSlayer19118 жыл бұрын
From a quick read on the wikipedia article for turtle shells, it seems that pyramiding is more of an indicator of poor health rather than a debilitating symptom itself. Once all the underlying health problems are solved, a turtled with pyramiding should still be able to live a full and healthy life. I imagine it probably would cause a somewhat weaker shell just because of the shape, but I have no answers as to pain or discomfort. And that's pretty hard to study too, so I doubt we're going to get any concrete answers.

Hey, this may be a weird question, but do you have any advise on how to bond with a blind animal? A blind, young squirrel recently came into my care. Usually when people bring me baby squirrels, I try to handle them as little as possible and eventually reintroduce him into the wild, but that's just not possible with this guy. He's also older then the ones I usually see, being fully furred and eating solid foods. I've tried to give him to a professional, and even called a few zoos, but sadly no one will take him and almost everyone has told me to have him put down (despite his health, he's just blind, not dying). His name is Stevie and I'll likely have him for the rest of his life.
@ShadeSlayer19118 жыл бұрын
He's not going to be re-introduced, so if he allows it, you can and should handle him as much as possible. This will get him habituated to allow you to care for him. If he's going to remain in your care, you might as well let him bond with you. I don't know much about squirrels or blind animals, but I presume regular handling will eventually win him over. Squirrels are a social species after all.
@suzannep7 жыл бұрын
I used to care gor a friend's blind and deaf cat when they were away. She used her nose and sence of touch to experience the world. Allowing a blind animal to smell you first before picking them up helps. With a deaf or deaf blind animal I would have to stomp my feet when entering a room to let the cat know i was there by the vibration.

Honestly a little concerned that Bridget might be hurting herself and covering it up with the mountain of hairties on her wrist. Obviously I don't know her and it's possible she just like all the colors, but wearing that many looks uncomfortable and often when kids wear so much stuff on their wrists at once it is because they are covering self-inflicted wounds. I really hope I am wrong. She seems like a very sweet kid and I hope she is okay.

@ffdreams8 жыл бұрын
The sad truth is exotic pet trade. People want a tortoise as a pet, people get them. What's also terrible is that people who own exotic pets like tortoise will get tired of them because of maintenance or just no longer interested. Many of these animals get released into the wild because people think "oh we have tortoises here in -insert country- I can just release mine since they are the same." This is not true, just because they are tortoises doesn't mean they are the same species and sadly many of these exotic pets outcompete with native species. As a result they can cause drastic damage to the ecosystem.
@elkeeper-27488 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And there is no real positive thing to the animal except useless information such as behavior and diet that humans don't really need to know. To be honest I have a turtle but I bought it before knowing the consequence.and I just can't release it because it will be an invasive species and I don't really think it can hunt
@DisabledPsychedelica7 жыл бұрын
I know ppl who seek them at higher prices based on pyramiding so this was a shock. Is there any other causes of pyramiding, like breeding or certain diets that are lacking nutrition?
