It's really awesome how you keep dishing out all that much needed animal awareness wherever you can. I wish there were more people like you and I hope much better for the next generation (and that you're inspiring kids to work with animals!). As there's still lots of badly informed people out there who end up with a bad experience and a poor animal that mostly gets the bad end of the deal out of it.
@Chris_Denora9 жыл бұрын
Pepijn Rietveld I agree with you, even more common pets like Guinea Pigs are far too often the victims of poor care due to lack of research and readiness. Here's an example I'd like to share, I rescued Zelda an Abyssinian Guinea Pig, from parents who bought a bunch for their 5 year olds. Zelda was kept in a cat carrier with her brothers. Turns out I noticed Zelda was pregnant after I had rescued her, likely they didn't realize how fast Guinea Pigs mature (about 3 weeks). Though her 3 pups born without issue and were well cared for, 2 are female and live with her here and the brother is with a good friend who has another boar. Sadly Zelda is still even now very shy and hard to handle, likely due to the way the children were handling her before I adopted her.

I had bunnies when I was a little kid. That experience caused me to have an intense fear/phobia of them my whole life because they were so vicious toward me - seriously, I have numerous scars. It wasn't until I watched your videos that I started to understand why: I held them incorrectly and was likely causing them pain/possibly damage and chronic pain. Now that I understand what went wrong my fear has lessened slightly but it was immediately replaced with guilt. Decades of intense fear and unnecessary guilt all because my family didn't do our research prior to owning new pets. Do your research folks, nobody wants to be the person with bunny-phobia...they're EVERYWHERE!!! ~Shudder~ Sorry bunnies I hurt, I didn't mean to!!!

in the mid 1990s we got two rabbits from a friend of the family, we were told they were both female, until one gave birth. She killed the first litter. Her second litter we got rid of the male, moved the mother outside and modified the cage to give her and the litter privacy, the litter grew and we gave most of them to a man who cared for alot of rabbits. We kept two and had the three rabbits for a bit. We made sure we always gave them rabbit pellets and sometimes fresh apples, fresh water every day, and salt licks. We cleaned the cage regularly and had the rabbits run around a run we made for them on nice days. We also picked dandelions and gave some to them because they love those, and some reason they love dry tumbleweeds too. But enentually construction was going on behind us and field mice moved into the shed and used our rabbit's fur for nesting, they were miserable and frightened so we had to give them away. We enjoyed the time we had with them. Their names were, Sally (the mother), Midnight, and Candy

Oh that's why Pearl is so understanding when she meets Dr Card, immediately opening her mouth etc: she remembers that it's for her own good! Very clever animal indeed! Also a question because you made me very curious: how did Cheeks make it clear that he prefers smaller enclosures? Thanks for all the magic things you do!

As an owner of a Flemish Giant, Continental Giant and a Holland Lop, I so appreciate all of your information. All of our buns have different needs, they're personalities are really wildly different. I do think the one thing that is truth for all bunnies is bananas. They all must have their daily banana or they go nuts. :-) They have long lives, people, so do your homework before you get one! They can live for a decade or longer, so they aren't hamsters! They need lots of attention!

Ugh mystery infections in reptiles are the worst, especially when you are giving them great care and have no idea how they could be getting infected. One of my turtles has been dealing with chronic shell infections since the day I got him, despite me being extremely diligent about maintaining water quality. Every time I think it's finally gone it comes back.

Now, 8 years after she died, I feel really bad about it. I hope to get another rabbit one day and give it a much better life.

I had never heard of tegus before, so I looked them up. I was pretty astonished to find you can order them online, just like a toaster or something. It just seems strange that I could put a living creature in a "shopping cart" and then have it shipped to me via FedEx. But, I suppose this is the same way pet shops get them.
@MyDragonflyDust9 жыл бұрын
+Cornelius Sneed As long as the reptile is shipped overnight with proper packaging and the temperatures on shipping day are not extremely hot or cold, the animal does completely fine. Look up reptile unboxing videos to see for yourself. I have had two leopard geckos shipped to me and they arrived safe and well. However don't trust any seller who don't have a live arrival guarantee policy. It tends to be a red flag that they cut corners and put animals at risk.

I feel like it's sad CHeeks doesn't have a bunny friend. My rabbits are 500% happier now that I finally got them bonded. Now I'm just looking for more ways to make them happy in our apartment. Sadly they aren't the best at always peeing in their litter boxes so it's hard to let them wander as much as I wish I could let them. Someday we'll have our own house with a great rabbit room like your Cavy room.

I have a question! About a year ago we rescued a netherland dwarf rabbit, she was kept by a family who didn't realize that bunnies are a daily commitment and need special care. Anyway, she is very happy and loves to run around and play. It took her a while to be comfortable with my presence and my being able to touch her and pet her, but over time she now comes to me and sits by me. The only thing I am working on is the fact that she flips out whenever someone tries to pick her up or move her in anyway. I suspect that is because she was probably mishandled as a baby and so she just doesn't like it. So I started to try and get her used to my hand in a more touchy way. It's at the point now where she is fine if I pet her (she actually comes and leans on my hand until I pet her). I have resigned to the fact that she may just never be "cuddly" or she may never be okay with me handling her in any other way than just petting her. However, this makes things like brushing or clipping her nails very difficult (never had an accident because I go so slowly and kind of let her do it on her terms). Any ideas on how I could possibly get her comfortable with me just brushing her and stuff?
@massimookissed10238 жыл бұрын
My Netherland dwarf bunny wasn't keen on being picked up, and he'd never been badly treated, he just wasn't into it. He was fine being petted on the ground though. Maybe they like to have the option to move away. Just try brushing your bunny where it is, without picking it up.

I have a chinchilla question. I've had my chinchilla, Kate, since I was nine and now I'm almost 22, so she's an older chinchilla. Lately I've noticed a drop in her activity. I let her run around my room every night for at least an hour (I leave the door to her cage open so that she can go back in if she gets hungry or thirsty), but lately she's been going back in her cage and laying down after about 30-45 minutes. I also give her a bath after she runs, but lately she's been taking shorter baths too. Is this normal for her age or should I be worried? I also wanted your opinion on her cage. Her cage is 3'4" long, and 1'5" wide. It's a one story cage, so we added two wooden shelves for her. She has a hay bin that is always full, a food dish with pellets that is always full (I feed her her special food at night), and two chew toys(one is a wreath made of thick sticks and the other is a block made of the same stuff her dust is made of with wooden blocks attached). Is there anything more I should be doing for her?

***** Yes, she does have a hiding house, I forgot to mention that. Thanks for all the info! :)

Cheeks is awesome however you did say that he has had no issues from not being neutered. What you didnt mention is that you SHOULD neuter males unless breeding them as they are prone to testicle cancer not the mention if they escape. You save the environment as well as give him a longer life. Doe's are susceptible to urine infections and things of that nature also. Bunnies are very complex and need to be monitored carefully to keep them safe.
