How can there be people disliking this? A very solid tip anyone can use to relax a voice. I use a straw for various vocal applications as a singer and a coach and it is very useful.

***** A lip trill does exactly the same thing, no straw needed!
@lukekent96879 жыл бұрын
UptempoMusicLessons no it does not. The straw lengthens the vocal tract. You can press the cords easily with lip trills...straw is great for unpressing them.

***** Is there video evidence of this? Otherwise I am apt to disagree with you.

UptempoMusicLessons Probably, the use of a straw in vocal therapy has and continues to be thoroughly researched and used. The author of this video is a voice scientist who is highly respected, He likely has research papers on this very topic you can read. When you use a straw...the straw acts as an extension of the vocal tract giving more space (basic physics-increasing the length of a instruments tube) More space promotes more effcient voice use (the whole idea of keeping an open throat etc) I am not saying lip trills are not useful though. if you want an interesting variation to straw use...try and use the straw in a bottle of water. Gives more back pressure and promotes relaxated vocalization.

***** Sounds plausible enough, I am going to do some research on this. I would love to see proof of it though in video, hopefully he has some footage. This is the first I have ever heard of using a straw as a vocal therapy but hey, anything that can help, no matter how seemingly silly, is worth it. Thanks for the rundown.

This is a concept that was preached to me by all the vocal coaches I have had over the years. After using this exercise......I finally get it but only about 40 years too late as now I have vocal issues. I do expect my practice of this to improve my voice and give me a good singing voice for the next 20 years if I get to live that long! Thank you to my voice therapist for teaching me this and for recommending this video!

(continued) The increased backpressure, logically, should decrease subglottic pressure during phonation, allowing the vocal folds to achieve maximum stretch more easily. I note how it encourages low laryngeal position and predominantly cricothyroid stretch (forward lean) as opposed to stretching just the ligament and edge with the cricoarytenoids. This coordinated muscle stretch minimizes any register change "bumps" and gives a smooth glide to the highest pitches. It also seems to encourage ....

It will help beginners to check the air isn't passing through the nose by blocking the nose while singing through the straw.

(cont.)...increased Bernoulli effect, and thus a cleaner sound, with less air leakage along the midline. It is this that I conjecture is responsible for the feeling of "higher placement" (an acousic phenomenon from a better mucosal wave = restored formants).

Very helpful. If I don't have a straw, I find I can get similar backpressure and results by puckering out the lips and buzzing through a very tiny opening in the center of the lips, just enough for a tiny amount of air to escape. I have a student undergoing chemotherapy and dealing with resulting vocal fatigue, so will see if the straw technique helps his stamina. I am still curious as to how and why the technique works, biomechanically and acoustically.

Dr, yes, Dr Ingo Titze is one of the world's most established vocal scientists. Mr, yes, Mr Cafiero.. On what premise do you criticise his information upon selfishly receiving it at no cost? Maybe present your data, or knowledge (*ahem), for what you deem to be the correct approach; as it seems that the worlds leading mind in vocal science, health and understanding just doesn't cut it for you... Tool.

Just for those inclined to actually read what MrCafiero says: I recommend that you don't , for several reasons. This person has frequented several forums for singers/pedagogues and fails to agree with basically anything anyone says. He detests people who use imagery in their practice (whether singers or teachers), and he detests vocal science because it apparently doesn't help people sing better. Hint: he generally detests modern science because it doesn't confirm the views of the outdated and incomplete voice research he builds his opinions on. The only one's I've ever seen him agree with are his own students. Go figure.

You're pressing your voice, creating an irritation. Listen to Dr. Titze when he does his slide - there is no force, it's a light sound. Don't try to make the sound loud or beautiful or anything at all. Just make a noise with no pressure being sure to use lots of abdominal support. Try that - I think it will help.

Why i feel pain in throat after doing this? ( And should i open soft palate? Because i feel it close while i try to mum through straw
@jennywolfe18 жыл бұрын
+Сергей Сагдеев It could be a number of things. If you feel the pressure in your neck is too much, try engaging your core more, if you're not sure what that feels like, it's using the same muscles as when you're pooping (gross I know but it's the same muscles). If you're still feeling pressure in your neck, try a larger straw until you get used to the feeling. Any normal drinking straw is fine. Keep the vocalizing relaxed and in a comfortable range. Make sure all the air is going through the straw rather than through your nose as well, this will make the exercise work more efficiently. A good way to do that is to hold your nose whilst doing these exercises. Hope this helped!
@alidavideo4 жыл бұрын
@Who let the virus out? Woof woof woofhan the advice is good. I'd only add to that to attempt a more open throat, because the original poster may have been over compressing/squeezing together their vocal cords. Pushing down and out like you're pooping is a very helpful technique most especially when singing up high. Any person who can properly belt uses that technique.
+UptempoMusicLessons The lip trill is a type of SOVT exercise as the tube straw. But both has different biomechanicals effects (Lip trill is based in vibratory reflex effect; and tube straw in the impedance). In voice therapy each one is indicated for specific cases, and each one will improve your voice in different ways.
@Jaaakob8 жыл бұрын
+UptempoMusicLessons Not true, not for me personally, and not for lots of other singers I know/have spoken to. They are different both in theory and in practice. Yes, I'm positive that you can tweak the lip trill to resemble the straw exercise (I've done that myself in times of need) but there's not much point to it if you have a straw available. Also this man is responsible for a lot of modern research on both straw phonation and occlusion exercises. I trust him to know why one is more suitable than the other.

i am thankful for a lot of his research, but the problem with voice scientists is that they don't have the acoustical knowledge of how to train the voice.
@darktangent107 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Voice scientists HAVE to have acoustical knowledge of how to train the voice--it is one of the most important elements of the science of singing. Dr. Ingo Titze does indeed have knowledge of acoustics. If you had read anything he wrote you would know that.

I don't think that with the centuries of voice training that produced the greatest singers ever that they need to blow through a straw to relieve a tired voice. It is called rest. And yes, they do post many videos on how the voice works and therefore how it should be trained. So you are wrong that it is nothing else.
@enricocaricatuscuroso7634 жыл бұрын
Deirdre Khoo straw phonation does nothing for resting all the muscles required for voicing. In fact, it forces you to use more work for less results. Have you ever tried to sprint while your legs are underwater? Literally what it forces you to do with the voice. Not to mention it sets up the wrong tensions in that process which creates more inefficiency. Yet people think vocalizing through a straw helps make vocalizing easier? It goes against basic science of air flow resistance. ingo titze is a well known scientist, yet tells people to speak from their eyes. In what way is that scientific? Listen to his speaking voice. It’s not efficient. Weak and tired. And his breathing is completely messed up. He has to pause in between every few words just not to run out of air, or has to whisper by the time he gets to the end of a sentence. This should simply not happen even if your voice and body is tired. At tidal breathing, near breathing rate for moderate speech, the diaphragm doesn’t really get tired. The muscle fibers contract in rounds so that it doesn’t tire, so the inspiratory checking action shouldn’t be so tired out that he runs out of breath in light speech. His voice is just blatantly very inefficient. And no wonder doing these kinds of “exercises”. If you’re tired you need to rest the muscles, not make it harder and make your voice more constricted and lightened. All this straw thing does is sets up a very efficient way to make your voice less efficient. It’s like going to a physical therapist for walking inefficiency and he places you on a motor scooter. A very efficient road to inefficiency. I mean literally at 3:07 he says the effort should be as if making a loud sound....literally teaching you to work harder for less payoff. Consider me a conspiracist, but it I find it odd how so often in medicine and pathology, what they seem to suggest to people are the complete opposite of what you should be doing, perhaps for the function of keeping you coming back to see them. Either way, straw do nothing but hinder singing and speech, and I have yet to see any convincing arguments otherwise when you actually consider the science.
@SilverSingingMethod11 жыл бұрын
