Yea exactly, I think at this point he lost the will to live. Sure he didnt want to die, but he was just tired and wanted it all to end and the only way for it to end was for him to die. Dude has had it rough ever since he was 10 years old, watching his mother die, joining the scouts and watching all his comrades die, betrayals, failures, and self hatred and when they finally achieved something great in reaching the basement, he finds out his dream and his goal has been for nothing. Holding the scariest of memories by himself for 4 years and noticing this evil in him to commit the worst sin in history, he has millions of lives on his consciousness and in the end he never sees that freedom he wants so bad, because it was never meant to be for him.

A lot of people clearly do not understand the ending. Eren did not became a villain. He is a true hero of the story. Ever since he kissed Historias hand, he was enslaved by the Attack Titan's power. He was living past, present and future all at the same time. In his mind, he already did the Rumbling at that very moment, there was nothing he could've done to stop it, all he could do is "keep moving forward" to the very end. All he wanted to do from that moment on is to be free again. And this is what happened in this very chapter. Mikasa released him from Ymir's power, and Eren released Ymir from the Titan power. And the entire world was free. Eren did what he promised. He protected his friends, and freed the world from Titans once and for all, at the cost of his own life. He is a real hero. Genocide was never his choice or his doing, it was Ymir's choice, and Attack Titan's doing. Manga makes it clear, idk how people get so confused by this.

The first panel of 139 chapter, Armin says "I understand you HAD to do it because you saw future in Attack Titan's memories" Eren doesn't correct him. Attack Titan made the choice, Eren was just the spectator. It's true he accepted his fate but he had no other choice. He was trying to make the best out of it by setting up his friends as heroes. He never wanted the Rumbling any more than he wanted to send the Smiling Titan after his mother. Like he said, it was all simply inevitable.

He said he was living outside of time when rumbling already happened and he couldn't do anything to stop it. And yeah he said he wanted it since he was born. But he also saidhe doesn't know why he wants it. Its not uis own will, it's Attack Titan's will. In other words, he was destined to do it. Obviously a child can not actually wish for global annihilation. Neither did Eren we knew from season 1-3. Eren only started "wanting" the rumbling when he learned it already happened in the future. He accepted his fate. But he obviously did not want that on his own. Watch the chapter when he breaks into tears and starts apologizing to the little refugee child after saving him from some bullies. Eren never wanted it. Attack Titan wanted it. Ymir wanted it. Eren just wanted freedom.

When Eren tries to save that boy Ramzi in 131, he concludes the encounter with the line "Looks like the future doesn't change". In the latest episode, Grisha also says the same: "The future is immutable/has already been decided". Say you see a moment that happens in the future. If you do something to change it and it doesn't happen anymore, how did you see it in the first place? AoT doesn't follow the Steins;Gate approach (multiple timelines) but has a fixed timeline which doesn't allow changes. Whatever you do to prevent the future, you end up becoming part of the events that reach the same future. This is the causal loop theory or the predestination paradox which shows like Netflix Dark and The Terminator and even Harry Potter (Azkaban) have explored before.

And to end the series like that would make people mad cause then what was the point of the whole story? Just to have everything repeat itself again? There’s no payoff, nothing would change, I see them adapting the alternate reality at the beginning of the final episode to explain how the whole series started way back in ch 1 and then end the series normally like in the manga.

The entire series is so well planned, like if you think about it, Eren had everything set up from the day he got the attack titan and onwards, which was why he was a bit confused as to why Mikasa had different hair length. Older Eren was most likely explaining to younger eren how you couldn't change the future. And many things younger eren says about the titans are questionable, like on the boat scene leaving his hometown, where he stated he would slaughter the monsters across the walls, which also points to the marleyans.

But he just accepted their attacks because he wanted to grant them the freedom to stop the rumbling and to "save Mikasa, Armin, and everyone else". It's crazy how may readers/watchers only view _the surface of their dialogues and actions_ and forget to _dig deeper or think outside the box._ Many people see Eren as the "pathetic genocidal freedom-seeker", and never really considered what he felt or what he wanted to do. _Justification isn't important, but understanding is._ The outcomes may not be as great or successful, but that's what Eren's fate had in store for him and the world.

This is the only series that actually put me into depression. This is such well written, from a story where everyone was happy and Eren being a hero of the Paradis to a sad tragedy just for the sakes of freedom. It's sad AOT had to end like this.This is a masterpiece from Isayama.

My idea for a more cheerful ending that doesn’t intrude upon the original ending. After Eren dies, his soul rests in an endless darkness for years because he can’t pass on due to all the guilt and grief tethering him down. After years of waiting, when Armin and Mikasa pass, the darkness that Erens been sitting in for so long begins to dissipate and a bright shining light envelops him. He looks forward in this bright light, it looks like…sunlight?.. He sees two figures emerge from said light that slowly get closer. Armin and Mikasa. Armin speaks “It’s time to go Eren..” Eren responds “Where…?” Mikasa holds out her hand “To the sea…” Erens eyes widen as he reaches out to take her hand, only for him to pull back. In that moment, Eren begins to cry…after so many years. Covering his watering eyes, he begins to weep and sob. Armin and Mikasa quickly rush to his side and comfort him as he finally releases what feels like years and years of regret and sadness “it’s okay now Eren, it’s all over…” Armin says as slowly, Erens tears begin to cease. Armin and Mikasa help Eren up and help him toward the light, but Eren stops again “B-but. I don’t deserve it, not after what I’ve done…I’m…I’m a devil, just as the world said I was..” Mikasa and Armin started sprinting forward, turning into their kids self “None of that matters anymore! Don’t you get it Eren? We’re free!” Armin says with a huge smile on his faces as they both look back at Eren who is now also his kid self. Mikasa approaches Eren and removes her scarf “Like you did all those years ago for me…let me wrap this scarf around you now..” she said as she wrapped her scarf around Eren. Armin and Mikasa grab hold of Erens hands and all three of them walk forward “Mom? Dad?” Eren says as all three of them disappear into the light.
