When I tell you guys that I put SO much time into this video, I 1000% mean it. This video might very well be my favorite I have ever made, so I hope you guys love it! Also, in case anyone asks, the A-20 bombers are used in this video instead of B-17s because I don't have access to those planes in this simulator. So I did my best! One thing I find fascinating with the ME-262's is that when they were first spotted, they caused pilots to be mentally evaluated after seeing "a propeller-less plane that flew faster than any plane they'd ever seen." As the quote goes, any sufficiently advanced technology can be misconstrued as magic, or something along those lines.

Nope. That's not true. U thinking that because u don't put it into conclusions, the war wS the same as every war after. Of course different scenarios but similar idea. Many pilots knew about jet engines way before the great war of 1939. Jet engines where a concept for many in aviation fields. That technology was invented in the 30ths. But Germany actually did create UFo" u can actually find research on that suggesting that the first ever ufo was build by Germany during its formation of political power. I'm pretty sure that the magical objects referred to the Horton and the experimeGermany, aircraft of germany,

I doubt that story. By the time the Me-262 was making its first combat sorties the RAF already had the Meteor in production and a squadron undergoing operational conversion undertaking its first operational sorties within 2 weeks of the ME-262. By August 1944 US bombers crews were being sent on training flights where they would have to defend against jet attacks as both defensive and offensive jet tactics were being worked out.

In the last scenario option C would have counted as a mission kill. By damaging the enemy fighter you would have done you duty in protecting the bombers. Furthermore, without a section to cover your six you in turn would be open to a surprise attack by a hidden enemy. Lone wolfs seldom lasted long in combat. The secret of success was to operate as part of a cohesive unit. A well disciplined fighter squadron could meet out far more destruction than any individual fighting on his own no matter how skilled. in essence, in combat it is better to claim a damaged enemy aircraft that to be shot down with a confirmed kill.

Another sim pilot here. Dodging ME-262's is pretty easy if you see them coming. Keeping them away from bombers is harder. Having time to climb above the bombers is unlikely, you'd better be there from the beginning. Most of the actual shoot downs occurred when a Mustang driver choose to give chase when a jet was returning to base. That or the jet simply flew away and disappeared. Yeah, risky stuff.

From a mental point of view, most pilots lack the killer attack drive their ancestors did, I know this old story, there was this one case of an air show in Brittain where this old retired in his 50 Luftwaffe pilot got in the cockpit of salvaged and restored Bf109, and used live rounds to shoot down some balloon over the ocean, he outperformed the RAF rookies who were using jets, to put on a show, there were also these other retired veterans from the Blue Angels, and they were laughing they're asses off at the rookies, after landing the plain he started asking them "Have none of you ever asked your fathers or grandfathers what to throttle felt like, the roar of the engines, the clenching of the teeth when the machine guns fires!?" "If not, then be thankful, for if we hand I would have to write to your mothers saying I'm sorry I had to shoot down your child", he chewed them out,

Man, it’s wild to think that all my War Thunder sim play has paid off this much! Although I’ve never escorted formations of bombers at a time, I’ve found that the bombers’ gunners often repel enemy aircraft like magnets, hence my constant decision to return to the formation. Furthermore, for you up-and-coming pilots, if A. The enemy is faster than you, go back. B. It seems too good to be true, IT IS. Thank you for coming to my dogfighting Ted Talk.

He even one upped himself as a special thank you for taking the time to listen to an old war vet and his stories went to his room and came back with a copy of his book and autographed it.

Yeah on the second set of options, option B was specifically, "turn from the fight, putting distance between you and the enemy". Except when the answers came, he suddenly changed it to mean that B mean running away, which is not how I interpreted it at all. I think that C would mean you are more likely to get shot down because you are going to be slow and on a predictable flight path, where as if you take a moment to break off the engagement for a few moments and set up for a more favourable position, you are more likely going to be able to effectively protect the bombers, because you aren't going to be such an easy target. If he said that B meant running away I would have never chosen B. So that set of options was a bit of a fail imo.

In the initial bounce I think breaking right or left would have worked equally well. The roll rate on a 262 isn't anywhere near what it is on a 190 and breaking left would put you under his nose quickly,, while breaking right gets inside his arc. If the 262 has a wingman you could be turning into his fire whichever way you go. An aggressive (and risky) response might also have been to continue the roll and see if you could get some fire on them as they shoot past instead of pulling through a turn.

Yes option B would have worked also
@seanmalloy7249
@seanmalloy7249 2 жыл бұрын
However, the scenario specifies that the 262s are coming in from four o'clock, not dead astern, which means that turning left would be turning to align your plane with their line of flight, decreasing the angle-off that they're shooting from and simplifying their firing solution. Turning into them immediately increases the angle-off and forces them either to zoom to trade airspeed for altitude in a high yo-yo to be able to bring their nose around faster, or extend out to get separation before coming back around. C is still superior to B.

The Me 262 would often fly so fast that they couldn’t get a shot off before passing their targets. The other key issue was the relatively new jet engines which took about five minutes to reach full speed, allowing the jets to be vulnerable to Allied attacks. If the throttle were advanced too fast the engine would flame out. So the way to kill the plane was to follow it back to base and as it cut speed to land, kill it.
@p.oinonen6706
@p.oinonen6706 2 жыл бұрын
The issue would depend most often upon the 262's flight status - it was far more vulnerable on takeoff and landing than in flight. That was how *Chuck Yeager * downed a pair. The Germans tried protecting the fields with normal fighters and additional flak batteries (often manned by Hitler Jugend) but they were not generally a match for the later P-51s.
@egal680
@egal680 2 жыл бұрын
the german fighter performed better than p51 below 6000m. additional the p51 wasnt really resilient to gunfire, exspecially explosive shells. so using them in ground attacks vs airfields with fighter cover is pure dumbness. only the sheer numbers of p51 could turn this idea become not disaster....if pilots inside the plane are around equal in skills. fortunatly für US most skilled german pilots where already dead or on the eastern front( similar like ground forces). but if they get on one of them, they got really problems with high own losses( for example when E.Hartmann met some P51s over romania mid 1944.....)

@@egal680 Germany made a horrible mistake flying their pilots to death. Aircraft production according to Speer was up in 1944 despite Allied attacks. Unhappily, pilot production was not. America sent pilots home if they survived 25 or 30 missions (roughly 50/50 chance) to act as instructors for new pilots for the duration. The later P51s did indeed provide cover from altitude higher than 6000m ; it had a service ceiling of 12,800 m. I have relatives in Germany named Hartmann ; I should check and see if there is any connection to the pilot ...

Interestingly enough, i got every single one right, but every single time, my reasoning was incorrect. 1: My reasoning for turning right was that, since the 262s were already banking left, turning right would force them to completely change direction, thus throwing off their aim for long enough to shoot right past me, since they were so much faster than me. 2: Climbing is the right option here. Chasing a 262 down with a prop plane is obviously impossible if the 262 is undamaged, and i didn't even consider running, since my job was to protect the bombers. 3: My job is to protect the bombers. There's little point in doing anything else but going for an attack run on an enemy fighter about to hit the bombers i'm tasked with protecting. I already have the energy advantage, and the jets of the era had pretty poor climb rate anyway compared to their contemporary piston driven counterparts. 4: Again, my job is protecting the bombers, not shooting down enemy fighters. If i manage to shoot one down, that's a nice side effect of course, but i already forced the 262 into retreating from its attack run. I've already done what i was tasked to do. There's really no good reason to chase it now. Plus, even if i managed to shoot it down while chasing it, after doing so, i not only have to climb back up in order to regroup with the bomber formation, but also, until i do, i'm a single, isolated fighter in enemy territory, and thus vulnerable to follow-up attacks.

And the Me262 was very overrated, it had limited operational time in the air. It's engines usually lasted no longer than 100 hours, due to lack of metals, like Tungsten! and Allied pilots, followed it down to it's airfield,and shot it down, with ease! It was a rush job, born out of desperation!

@@sprinter1832 The ME262 was usually piloted by the best of the few remaining experienced pilots, that's why it had the success it did. On top of the issues you mentioned, the throttles had to be moved very slowly or else the engines could experience flame outs or other failures.

I think there would have been enough time at full throttle on a banking dive with all six .50 cal.`s firing away at a wounded 262 making a landing approach would have been the best time to take a chance at actually killing the pilot who is harder to replace at this stage.Planes just fly,but humans make the decisions that make it or break it.It also would have other factors needed before I conclude.Is this enroute or escorting them home,how much ammo have I got ,am I in command and if so do I have wingmen who can stick with the bombers while I do a quick shoot and scoot...these are all important details.I think a Mustang could handle it on a short leash if the gap could be closed within 45 seconds,which is actually under the minutes that were mentioned until AAA range.If there was still a lot of mission to go,I might let it go,since there will be more 262`s and maybe some FW`s inbound now that the enemy knows where the bombers were last engaged.I would think a 262 kill would be a fairly big deal worth risking one`s life for,especially if it was the first one shot down in air combat,even if it was n`t a dog fight,per se.

One small gripe about option B in the first example, me-262s have a notoriously bad roll rate, seeing as they are coming from behind at 4 o'clock and obviously banking right, pulling into the dogfight would mean they have the advantage on you since they are already turning that way, turning left away from them would mean they would either have to pull negative Gs (something neither pilots nor the aircraft can easily do) or waste time banking the other direction to follow you.
@BaronRougeCF
@BaronRougeCF 2 жыл бұрын
I agree ! I don't think actual pilot would say such things. It worth what it worth but on every combat simulator turning into the firing turn is suicide. Plus the 262 is coming fast. If you turn left you can easily dodge the incoming bullets. I even suspect with the angle of approach that having A option would work. 262 is so fast that you're almost like a slow Po-2 and then your low speed became your advantage

I'm a war thunder air realistic and sim player myself. I made only a single bad decision here which is wait and see what the ME262 will do, Because most of the time if i dive down right away. If he have a wingman behind him i would been dead, But I see why option A is a better option. Although in the later stages of the war. Mustangs pilot's order have changed from bringing the bomber back alive to destroying the ME262. So I would consider being passive and patient to be the better option, Wait and see if they got something left for me, And when the moment is right. Dive on 'em. Although, Main reasons I have made this decision is because of insufficient amount of infomation. I did not know if he had a wingman or not. I recommend you add visual clues and make it clear from the beginning that there will be visual clues. Other than that, Fantastic works. I love video like this. Please keep up the great work!

The P-51 Mustang was also able to perform the "Lutfwaffe stomp" which consisted in leaving the enemy to chase you and then turning off the engine and making a sharp turn. That left the enemy fighter confused and out of options for a short time, enabling the Allied fighter to turn sharply again and shoot the ME-262 fine!!

Let’s say you have the p51 Step 1 know your plane: you manoeuvre better than him his manoeuvrability is shit compare to yours. Exploit this to completely fuck the me pilot over Step 2 know your guns: his gun is basically Mig 15 but maybe a lot more accurate idk. Whatever the accuracy is don’t let him get on accurate hit on you if he do then prepare to see your maker. Your guns are 50cals which barely scratches people when only a few projectiles connects with target, you should always try to shoot as many bullets as you can(not all ofc) whenever you get the chance to hit him. Final step never run away: the point is that me is crafted with black magic(joke intended)so it can fly faster than you. If you ever try to run away or dive away from it is near impossible. Always stay in fight

P51 B/C/D/K's shot down 141 ME 262's from NOV 1944 to MAY 1945. Source: "ME 262 vs P 51 Mustang" published 2019, author Robert Forsyth. Most(70%+) ME 262's were killed during attacks on bomber formations at high altitude. It is a myth that the P 51 could only kill the ME 262 during take off or landing. With 2000+ ft altitude advantage, the P 51 could gain enough dive speed to temporarily run at near ME 262 speeds, and the .50 cal BMG (Browning Machine Guns) had the range, accuracy and flat trajectory to hit the ME 262's at long ranges. Many German fighter pilots were of the opinion that the higher ammo capacity, higher rate of fire and considerably longer range of the .50 BMG over the 20mm or 30 mm cannons, gave U. S. fighter pilots a great advantage.

The last choice was not my best but in that choice, I would have kept my altitude and followed him till an opportunity, go into a steep dive, gaining speed. matching his and open up on him then move off over and away. But maybe I would not have made it? You are right, my ultimate duty is to, "Run away to fight another day!" My uncle served in WW II as ground crew for the A-20 in the Pacific. He promised my Grandmother, he would not be a pilot but take a safe job to come back to her and he did. Problem was, he married a girl from Tulsa, OK, we were in Oregon, and lived there flying model aircraft. I have one of them. His name was Benjamin Reames, a nice guy. He told me about some of his experiences, they were unbelievable.

Not enough information for some choices. In the 4th question for instance, u imply that the jet had slowed down enough that only a few seconds would be required to get in range and finish him. Certainly following down for several minutes a la Richthofen would be a bad idea but letting potentially a Galland or Steinhoff get away when seconds from the kill? In the 2nd answer, a choice was to rejoin the bombers but it didn’t say CLiMB above and rejoin. BIG DIFFERENCE. Just rejoining at their altitude would be like Goering-dictated tactics in the Battle of Britain.
