Somebody That I Used To Know lyrics
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
And I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know...
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know
That I used to know
Somebody...

In 2007 I met this young woman who became my best friend, she made me laugh better than nobody, the sun in my life. In 2011 we start a relationship but the begining was very difficult for several reason (our exs, the jealousy…) and we break up at the same time this song came out. I was so sad… but few weeks after we got back together. And today she is my wife since 2015, and she sleeping next to me as i write these lines. The only love of my life. The break up songs exist, but in the real life, sometimes, the ending is better 😉

I used to love this song when I was younger and grew obessed with it when it came out. But now fresh out of my first relationship..I can finally appreciate the lyrics and relate to them to the depths of my soul. I'm thankful my ex had the courage to initiate the break up once the relationship shifted to a hollow and bitter dynamic. Although there are agonizing emotions that come up at this point of my healing journey, I'm so grateful that he saved us both from many years of pain and heartache. We weren't right for each other in the end, but everything I've learned about myself after our time together- is still an unforgettable and integral part of rediscovering how to love myself. -So Thank you MB, I wish you the best.

As someone who has gotten out of an abusive relationship this song hits differently. When you think that somebody was your whole life and you could not live without them but once you actually start doing it, you see that they were slowly killing you. I've gotten to a point in my life that I never thought was possible with actually being free of suicidal thoughts, being able to feel joy and living my own life instead of my whole life being about making the other person happy and being manipulated into Stockholm syndrome. After someone has screwed you over so many times and made you believe it was always something you did, you do want to cut all the ties to that person. For your own safety. Don't let anyone tell you that abuse is a normal thing that happens in every relationship and you should just deal with it. If you think this is the case for you, do some research on narcissism and you might be surprised how many things it will clear up. Love bombing is not love, it's not worth it to let someone destroy you just so you can have some good days every now and then.

Starts off a little gay, adds the right amount of sexy, and then you feel the deeper meanings. The facial expressions, the deep breathing…it felt like they were still fighting. The nudity adds to the vulnerability. Excellent visual art combined with the musical art. Well done.

Just caught this and wow!! The lyrics perfectly depicting emotions twisted and torn, the two way hurts, the wronged and the wronged, just their different perspectives. At odds, yet so harmonious with each other. Voices, pained and resolute. Art imitating life. I will never get tired of this personally lived song.

Now and then I think of when we were together Like when you said you felt so happy you could die Told myself that you were right for me But felt so lonely in your company But that was love, and it's an ache I still remember You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness Like resignation to the end, always the end So when we found that we could not make sense Well, you said that we would still be friends But I'll admit that I was glad it was over But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing And I don't even need your love But you treat me like a stranger, and that feels so rough No, you didn't have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records and then change your number I guess that I don't need that, though Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over But had me believing it was always something that I'd done And I don't wanna live that way Reading into every word you say You said that you could let it go And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing (aah-ooh) And I don't even need your love (ooh) But you treat me like a stranger, and that feels so rough (aah) No, you didn't have to stoop so low (ooh) Have your friends collect your records and then change your number (aah) I guess that I don't need that, though Now you're just somebody that I used to know Somebody (I used to know) Somebody (now you're just somebody that I used to know) Somebody (I used to know) Somebody (now you're just somebody that I used to know) I used to know That I used to know I used to know Somebody

I used to think that the quality of music has decreased in the last two decades..compared to the 70's certainly so. This is one of those gems that can be compared in the same category as the 70's. It stands on it's own while on the radio..and they made a wonderfull artistic video!! I just read the couple retreated into anonimity after their hitsingle came out..great story!

If that ain't a story about being the insignificant other of a narcissist I don't know what is. Idealized at first, future faking, feeling empty around them, everything's your fault, bad mouth you to their friends, cut you off, out, discarded, then you didn't exist at all and nor did the thing called a relationship except you know it did. It's just that person you used to know never ever existed. Twas a front, a facade. A con to get you to love them just so they can abuse you in a weird kind of personality syphon

i really don’t understand this that way. i feel like he had some type of love for her, he put a pressure on her to be as perfect as he made her up to be in his head. he felt empty in her presence because the person he loved didn’t exist, she couldn’t be up to the expectations he put on her, she wasn’t as perfect as he wanted her to be. he made her feel guilty for not being who he wanted her to be (which you can understand in her lyrics, saying he screwed her over, always gaslighting her into thinking she was the problem). but when they broke up, he wanted to be friends because he was attached to her, but she didn’t want to be caught in that loop again and preferred to have him become a stranger. he felt it was unjustified for her to cut him off but she was so hurt that she didn’t think the friendship was worth saving. i really think it’s about two people mutually sabotaging each other, whether it’s during the relationship or after. i really don’t understand how the woman could be seen as a narcissist here, and i don’t see him as such either. i feel like he just wasn’t ready to let go & ended up realizing that he lost someone great despite her not being up to his expectations. to me this is about him not willing to let go of her because he realized who she really was - not the idealized version, the human version - only when he lost her. i also think the woman has these lyrics especially to make the audience understand her side, to which he still responds with a "but" ;)

& yeah, the paint coming off of her is his mind letting go of the grasp of idealization on her. she was still painted into the perfect women, but when she cut him off it came off, she didn’t have a place in his perfect geometric mind anymore, she was free to be a stranger to him :) he’s himself painted because he doesn’t think he did any wrong, he doesn’t realize his cycle of idealization. he painted himself when she came into his life & thought they lived in a perfect world

I think you heavily misunderstood the song, to me the song is more about him loving someone and during the relationship blamed all the bad things on her , in the end they broke up and even though she told him that they would still be friends she simply treated him like a stranger by pretending that they never had a relationship in the first place. Im basically just qouting the lyrics but they are straightforward as hell.

this is instantly what it made me feel. He cut her part short when she expressed herself and made it about him saying “okay well you didn’t have to cut me off” that’s what narcissists do. You can tell them how you feel and they play the victim. also she said “you said you could get over me and I won’t catch you hung up on me so I left” and the removal of her part in his picture. I just got out of a narcissistic relationship and this is exactly what I felt
