The Musicianship and Singing of ABBA seemed to me to always be overlooked because of the genre and style of the tunes. The same could be said for many of the "Bubble Gum music" from back in the very early days of The MTV Music Age! I dated a gal in my early 20's who turned me on to a ton of music that could have slipped on by me and ABBA was one of those "Surprise's" that I was fortunate to hear and enjoy! I was STILL a Huge RUSH Fan and of course Bowie, Steely Dan, and The Doobie Bro's, and many others too...but when I was out of the public eye of my pals....my gal showed me a musical life that I might have missed! I'm forever grateful to her too! Great Cover Troy as you nailed This! Cheers From ohio

I agree with Dante below. I love the bass line to Money Money Money. I think it's quite tasty and I previously suggested the bassline Money as McCartney-esque. I always found as a bass player that the octave playing so prevalent in pop (Disco) music of the 70s could be actually quite taxing on the ligaments in the wrist! Especially with all the proper stretches. I understand that repetition strengthens that but when you're used to doing traditional rock songs, these disco tunes wake you up a bit. Looking forward to your cover of Money Money Money. I happen to play in three bands. A hard rock band, A Stones and Petty tribute, and a dance band. But I am fascinated by ABBA. Mostly it's the girls' harmonies that are siren to me but I like also they way they crafted their songs. Pop, yes perhaps, but all forms of music have their place. And the bass is integral to it all! Thanks Troy!
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great comment, there's a lot packed in there. - Yeah, Disco bass-lines can be a wakeup call if you're not used to playing them. "Gloria" by Laura Branigan is a great example of that. "Last Train to London" as well! - Wow, you're a busy guy! I know a fellow who is in a Petty/Fleetwood Mac tribute which is pretty cool too. - Yeah, it was the incredibly catchy melodies that got me hooked on ABBA until I discovered how great some of the bass-lines were! Thanks and take care!

Dude you always blow my mind, I just started playing bass as a huge Rush fan, it's been 3 months and I watch your videos just to get inspired sometimes because wow, you are in a whole other league, your tone is immaculate too! Practicing a little bit every day just so I can get to this level Little question, do you ''whack the bass'' just like Geddy does? Because it's amazing how it sounds like you're using a pick but you're not
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for the very kind words! You're exactly right, playing every day, even if it's for just a little while, is better than not playing at all. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to just sit down and pick the bass up. If you do that, chances are that you'll be there for a while. I would say that I play with a medium amount of velocity. I used to play much, much harder until I figured out a way to set my basses up so that they "sound" like I'm beating them, without actually killing myself.

Not gonna lie Troy, after your rush covers I couldn’t get behind a lot of the other ones, but this is a theme I can definitely follow for a few months. LOVE your covers :))

I hear you and I appreciate you keeping an open mind. If I were going strictly for views and selling a good or service, I'd probably still be doing Rush... and definitely Beatle and RHCP covers, but I'm not. This means that I just learn, play, and upload songs with bass-lines that I think are interesting from a bass player's perspective and, as I've grown older (and definitely since I've started this channel) I've opened my blinders up quite a bit and found a lot of interesting stuff by a diverse field of artists. With regard to ABBA, I used to openly mock them when I was young, but now have a great appreciation for, not just the awesome bass-lines, but their music in general. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such an insightful comment Hesham!

I have been enjoying your videos for many months now and continue to be impressed with your skills/abilities and your collection of instruments. Thanks for sharing with us!!!
@TJH31133 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you! I have to tell you, the Ric is one of my least liked basses, for a lot of reasons that I won't get into now. Most often, I just use the bass I happen to be playing at the time. Once and a while I'll use a particular bass because I think it will suit the song well. I don't tailor my sound to the songs, I just get a sound I'm happy with and go with it. Also, once and a while, a particular bass just doesn't work as well as I'd like - either because of its sound or how I play it, and those are the songs that get the unlisted, alternate versions.

As far as the polls go, I always struggle to decide what to post, or if to post anything at all. So, when I'm really stuck, the polls help take the process of selecting a video out of my hands.

@@TJH3113 it's great you now have a wider appreciation, cuz there really is other stuff out there other than music I'm used to which is great that I have only now just discovered.

OK, this may sound weird, but the part around 2:52 reminds me of the part in Red Lenses @ 3:15. Not identical, but a similar, at least to me it does.

This is high class, very high class. Very impressive. Ruger Gunnarsson would have liked this if he had lived.
