Begin at 24:45 and listen to the background music/noise. Its only music until Sherlock turns his gaze over to John, and at 24:53 after he has made the suspiciously acute observation of John's lips ("Electric not blade"), you hear a faint but rather jarring heart heart beat... like his pulse has picked up, like its suddenly beating in his ears. A very particular reaction to a very particular sensation. It continues while he looks at John, but promptly dies down as Sherlock looks back at the woman. His heart rate jumps while watching John, but slows back down when watching a naked Irene. And it's definitely Sherlock's heart beating because every time we hear it, the shot has panned to Sherlock (complete with rainbow lights). Perfectly timed. Deliberately placed. I've watched this episode so many times and I've never picked it up until now! By the way, we all know what a key role the "pulse" plays in this episode. They told us... we didn't LISTEN... at least not closely enough, haha. Rebekah I don't know if someone has mentioned this bit yet, but I just caught it now. In fact I'm not sure if it has been addressed somewhere else in the video (I paused to comment while its happening, lest I forget), so apologies if this has already been covered. I guess I'll see. Absolutely Brilliant Job here, I've never watched Sherlock so closely.

Interesting how Sherlock asked John to punch him on an episode with BDSM themes... Also, looking back at food as a sex metaphor, Irene texted Sherlock: "I'm not hungry. Let's have dinner." This could imply that while she is interested in him, her interest is not romantic or sexual, because once again, she's a lesbian. Orrr I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. *shrug*
@wandanemer26304 жыл бұрын
May be it means that while she's not hungry *for him* (as a lesbian she is) she'll flirt with him anyway (since that's a big part of the whole game).

They broke the fourth wall a bit when Sherlock mentions the World War Two enigma code being broken because Alan Turing the man who broke the enigma code is played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the imitation game and he also obviously plays Sherlock. 'A scandal in Belgravia' was the first episode I've ever seen before I really knew anything about the show. I only watched it to see what all the fuss was about, and the ending impressed me so much. It still never fails to make me question everything I think to know about Sherlock, especially Johnlock. It was so well done. But I think Irene falling for Sherlock against every expectation is the most important part. I always have to think about her 'Look at us both.' to John as if she feels connected to him, because both of them weren't supposed to and didn't want to love Sherkock, but they both do, and they both know it. It's so so powerfull.

I love when Irene Adler says to John that she is gay. "look at us both"... How she tells him, I am gay but I can play a very convincing role of being straight. And look at us both. You (John) play a very convincing role of being straight. I do really believe that Irene is gay but I think there are some people in life you meet, that just step out of the norm, and make you feel completely different. Whether Sherlock is that person for both Irene and John is irrelevant. One thing for sure is that John has feelings for Sherlock, whatever they are.

I had two ships in Sherlock: one I thought it was a fantasy of mine, and another I thought it was almost canon. Former was Johnlock, later Shirene. With this you have convinced me I got it wrong all this time and they should be reverted. Sherlock/Irene will now be a fantasy of mine, according to the heteronormative POV of this episode (one that tricked me indeed to have this ship in the first place), while I transform myself in a fervent TJLC believer. Thank you!

I do believe in tjlc and I see where this interpretation of ASiB comes from, but I personally still see this episode from a different light. Most of the things you say do make a lot of sense, but at the same time the common interpretation makes sense too. I disagree especially on the part where you say both Sherlock and Irene have absolutely no attraction to eachother. Sherlock has special feelings for her, I think this is clearly visible, especially at the end of ASiB, in HLV and in TAB. However, I don't think he is in love with her, but he feels an attraction or at least a fascination towards her. In my opinion she also feels attracted to him, even though she is technically a lesbian. She is very fascinated by his intelligence and probably also his cold attitued towards most people. Maybe she even sees a challenge in trying to destroy this cool mask. Also I think it is very important for tjlc, that she is a lesbian and at the same time attracted to Sherlock, because like this John's statements that he isn't gay are proved irrelevant for his feelings towards Sherlock. I think that this scene between John and Irene is extremely important for the understanding of John and Sherlock's relationship. I feel that way, because I think this whole episode would be extremely twisted if we had to assume that everything that is stated or shown is in fact meant different. I think it would go a bit too far and not even Mofftiss would do something like that. But still, I don't fully disagree on your theories and I think maybe even both interpretations are possible. I enjoyed watching this episode and being animated to think about ASiB. Thank you for making this awesome videos and giving Johnlockers hope :)

24:55 - ummm...also the heart beating sound effect when Sherlock is observing John, but not when he looks at Irene???
@emz338 жыл бұрын
I hate to be the debbie downer on that one but the last glance over there's a heart beat. I think that's added in just to show the time passage.
@Zexion3528 жыл бұрын
Angatita but there's no scene change in the episode at this point. So the whole scene is simply Sherlock testing his observational skills on John compared to Irene, so there's no reason to have it there unless there's a subtle hint to his heart beating stronger when he looks at John than other people, even people that he would usually be engrossed with because of how interesting they are, like Irene.
@emz338 жыл бұрын
Sam Vinqvist But... there's a heart beat after/during looking at Irene at the end...... It's just showing how quickly he's gathering this information, in between heart beats (passage of time)
@Zexion3528 жыл бұрын
Angatita I understand better what you're trying to explain, but from my point of view there's no need for the heart beat to be there than. Later on, when he's looking at the combination in the email, time obviously slows down and there's no heartbeat, but we understand how fast his mind is working, but at this point it doesn't make sense to think of it that way. Sherlock identifies people instantaneous, more so because he already knows John, so if that heartbeat is to symbolize his heartbeat at that second then he needs to go to a hospital asap. I just personally can't see this as the way of symbolizing time passing because in that moment time is slowed down, that's why I take it as a symbol of affection instead, though you yourself make a good point as well.
@emz338 жыл бұрын
Sam Vinqvist I agree, it seems like that was what they were going for (they don't do anything without a reason) I'm just wondering why the last heart beat on Irene?
@Leindy38 жыл бұрын
So I just watched the episode again and noticed something: After Sherlock confirmed Irene Adlers death, he and Mycroft are talking. Sherlock asks if there might be something wrong about their attitude that caring isn't necessary. During this talk there is a shot (48:47) where they are in a square and the rest is dark. We see that shot again: at 56:33 with John in it, while he is talking to Irene - there is a lot about loving Sherlock and we see that John definitely feels something. At 59:22 (after John doesn't denies about liking Sherlock) there's the shot again. Actually the shot is used a bit bigger during the whole conversation between John and Irene, but it's slightly different. So I think there's a connection. Maybe that Sherlock indeed is caring (a lot) about John and doesn't know how to handle it, because he never felt something like that before. And John also (obviously) cares about Sherlock. It's a little detail but I think it's saying something. :) Love your videos!
@helpletmego42163 жыл бұрын
my favorite scenes are the most dramatic ones. so i've always adored that moment when sherlock comes home after eavesdropping the conversation between john and irene, the way he's kinda tuned out... but to see it in the new light--him being shaken and overwhelmed by the fact that john returns his feelings... WHOA i didn't think i could love it more!

I watched this episode with two of my friends, one being a (as far as I know) straight girl and the other being a gay guy. Being biromantic, I was the only person there actually attracted to women, and yet we could not stop gushing about how attractive Irene is. Seriously, what is with that woman? It's like sexual orientations just don't apply to her... I mean I'm asexual but damn
@mnschoen4 жыл бұрын
Welp, we've established that you don't know what "asexual" means and that you have under-defined your friends, so *giant shrug* Maybe your "straight girl" and "gay guy" are a little more complicated than the way you've pigeon-holed them.
@notjamin4 жыл бұрын
@@mnschoen Okay I don't even remember leaving this comment but I think I know my own sexual orientation better than you do. Three years later I still identify as asexual, but that doesn't mean I can't recognise when people look good. I don't know why you think I'm wrong about my friends either. The guy is very openly gay and has been for the entire time I've known him, and I did say that the girl was straight AS FAR AS I KNEW. Stop acting like I don't know myself or my friends. People can recognise that someone looks good without being attracted to them.

Thank you for your amazing work! A Scandal in Belgravia has become my absolute favourite episode only recently, after immersing into TJLC theory. Irene Adler's actions make so much more sense if the motivator behind them is fear, not love. Although I have to disagree with you at one point - in the big SHERLOCKED reveal, her tears are genuine. She isn't crying in an attempt to gain sympathy from Sherlock, she's afraid of her life. That's why I love that scene so much - the dramatic music, the cinematography, the heartbeats all play into the breaking of Irene's manipulative actions and revealing her true emotions, the fear for her life.

But oh my gosh, you mentioned that Irene's pulse wasn't racing with arousal but FEAR, and referenced the earlier scene with Mrs. Hudson, and now I BELIEVE. I've just watched the video recently uploaded to Sherlock official YT channel about how well Steven and Mark know each other, and there's 2 features of interest (awful pun). One question is about which is their favourite film and both say TPLoSH, and then what piece of writing are they most proud of, and Mark says it's 'A Scandal in Belgravia'. Now taking into account that ASiB has taken inspiration from TPLoSH and in Marks words about the film "Sherlock effectively falls in love with him in the film, but it's so desperately unspoken". Yes, it confirms this episode is all about Johnlock unspoken feelings. With that statement to me ASiB is now not a threat to Johnlock and how you've said it further confirms it. Yes, yes, yes I'm so ready for season 4😍❤️

Thanks for the vid! I always wanted more of Irene. Thanks for saying she is a mirror to Sherlock. She was written to be his match in intellect and was very elusive. (I think they could have written more of her.) Ugh… so poetic what you mentioned about the bruises on Sherlock’s face. One consensual and avoiding his eyes and mouth, and the other not, and not really caring. When Molly confronted Sherlock after he hurt her I cried and cheered at the same time. Someone so soft and kind and carried a torch for him stood up to him and held him accountable for his behaviour. And he apologized. It made me more sympathetic to Sherlock. Even John had the “Does not compute” face because he never got such an apology (yet) from Sherlock. “The answer is yes… You’re being presumptuous.” Ow. I really feel for Sherlock. I read the conversation between Mrs. Hudson and John as John being concerned about Sherlock as Sherlock was behaving heartbroken over Irene’s (fake) death, as if it were his first heartbreak, and he wanted to know how Sherlock got over heartbreaks in order to help him. John was so angry with Irene for that heartbreak when he met her later and realized she had faked her death. The score, Irene’s theme and Sherlock’s theme is melded together in this episode and I believe it is even played in the last season when Irene is no longer around. To me, it showed Sherlock facing his own heart and embracing his atypicalness. With Mrs. Hudson being attacked and still having the forethought to get Irene’s phone (such a badass) I read it as Sherlock checking her and when he saw her defensive wounds, he lost it. That he checked her pulse too, that’s such a Sherlock thing to do :). “She’s afraid”. Yup. Irene’s motivation was her protection. I love how you identified Sherlock’s and Irene’s juxtaposition in their meeting compared to their parting. And I love that you indicated that balance is restored when he saves her life like she did when she was introduced.

Okay. I just rewatched this episode AGAIN. lol. I have to say.. I know I know.. BUT I still think Irene fell for sherlock. Yes, she is gay. But, I have seen this happen before in real life. You essentially fall in love with who they are not their gender. That's not to say you want to have sex with them per say, just want to be entangled in their lives. I think she fell in love with his brain, there is a name for that it's called Sapiosexual (being attracted to intellect) I very much fall into this category, so I can see how this would happen.Also, knowing Sherlock and seeing how quickly John fell for him, you can easily imagine that it could happen to Irene in just a few short days too. It only took john one day. That being said, I DO NOT think Sherlock returned the affection for Irene, that is why it was so easy for him to walk away from her after he unlocked her phone. But that's just my opinion :)

The only thing I wonder now is...why does Sherlock have a picture of Irene in TAB? To remind him of how she helped reveal John's feelings? What do you think?
@ufolight8 жыл бұрын
+Rachael Kilmer oh it's like, disguising his heart as a straight heart (as on TAB pocketwatch = heart)! because being gay was dangerous at the time (1895 - eyes emoji) and he needed to pass as het. ALSO it was there to represent Victorian John's jealousy :)

Loved every minute of it. Although im sad because the "love" between Sher and Irene used to make me so emotional.

These are amazing! You do such a good job with these videos, they're so detailed and you have the perfect personality for this (you're adorable). Thank you so much for putting so much effort into making these for us in your free time!! The fandom loves you :)❤️ I do have one complaint though- why'd you change the thumbnails? I liked them the way they were, honestly. They showed you being enthusiastic and passionate and I feel like they really represented what the Sherlock fandom / Johnlock shippers are. Idk, maybe I'm being a bit overdramatic but I just noticed today that you'd changed them and decided it was the perfect time to leave a (long overdue) comment of appreciation as well as mention that. So... Yeah. Anyway, keep up the good work, Rebekah!! 😘

Molly and Lestrade. That's it, all the others are gay or bi :D

Sherlock now hold on. Apparently people ship Mycroft and Lestrade. Dont ask why, something about the fact that they wore matching ties.

Sherlock Watson Seriously ? They never even spoke to each other. I prefer Lestrade with Molly.

Sherlock I did too but I kinda like Mystrade. It would be an interesting ship.

Brava. Brava~! *Wild applause* I think I can actually watch A.S.I.B. now without panicking over Irene/Sherlock. I loved every second of this episode. Sherlock's reaction to John's confession made me...just...*scream*. You did such an excellent job with this. Thank you so, so much. As always, I'm so eager for the next episode. Your explanations are so fantastic and give me so much hope~.

I've always seen the camera work when he's leaving Battersea as a match to when Irene drugs him, and equated it with him getting something to take the edge off his pain on the way back to Baker Street.

I'm watching Sherlock with my mother who has never watched it, and my sister who may even ship them, (but I really can't know). I only just started to watch it, and I'm already in love. Although, when we saw an add for season 4 that had Sherlock saying "I love you" in it... I had a small internal fit. We've been saying "Who could it be?" back and forth for days, and I'm scared of what my mom will think if I say "I think it will be John". She's not homophobic, not in the slightest, but I'm still kidnapped scared... She doesn't know how deep I've gone on this internet. I know, it's not that deep, but for her it is. I ship them, and I want to say, but... I'm scared.

I have been waiting this episode for so long and It was amazing to say the last, actually just a couple weeks ago I saw "The private Life of Sherlock Holmes" (is not so easy to find and I need subtitles for some parts beacause I still learning the language) so I have clear in my mind the story and now you conect the dots is more amazing this episode... Well John is pretty clear on his jealous in some points but all that we miss for don't give a second look is extraordinary. The mirrow was brilliant playing and like you said, now I more convinced that before... Johnlock is going to happen and I can't wait to see it!! (Brilliant video Rebekah, I love all your videos!! and believe or not I saw all the video, the time pass super fast, you made them so entertaining that the extention doesn't matter)

Hi Rebekah (/*o*)/ First I wanted to say that I love and appreciate your videos, especially since lately it has been hard to find TJLC supporters who haven't given up at this point. Second of all, I wanted to talk about a certain number on the show, the one I was hoping you'll talk about in the Numbers in Sherlock. In the "Scandal in Belgravia" we find out that Irene's passcode stands for "SHER", making up the phrase "I am sherlocked". But it was pointed out by holey-fred-geddit in the video(1) that brought me to you, that the combination 7437 is the one that makes the word "SHER", while John's credit card PIN is known to be "743-" I wasn't sure if you were saving this for later or not, but I find this fun and I thought you would too. Thank you :3 (1) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKGspayYea2UrNE

OH MY GOD! I have to admit that I was confused about this episode, too. I never doubted that Johnlock is real and shipped it too of course, but I didn't think deeper into the whole thing I guess. So when I watched A Scandal in Belgravia, I also thought that Sherlock kinda liked Irene, and I was pretty puzzled about that. I really really loved how you turned my twisted brain the right way again ;-) It all makes so much more sense to me now, same goes for things or statements happening later in the show.I started watching your videos from number 1 to 12 (plus No 22, I couldn't wait haha ^^) and I have to say that I'm VERY impressed. I will definitely continue watching :-)One thing made me very sad, though. I was really shocked about what happened at Battersea because until now I didn't know that John kinda admitted his feelings for Sherlock there. I'm not sure, maybe one reason for that was the German synchronization/dubbing...I definitely need to check whether Irene says something similar to 'Look at us both' at Battersea and I just overheard that (unlikely, though) or they let her say something different in German. Unfortunately, sometimes (often!) things like that happen... I honestly never heard this sentence before and now, combined with John's reaction...well, let's just say my chin kinda hit the tabletop... Anyway, after realizing this and feeling still a bit shocked and relieved at the same time, I watched this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/paeUY6xrirVpirc Jesus. I'm a mess now. Puddle on the floor. With knowing that Sherlock 'heard' John admitting his feelings at Battersea, and only waiting to defeat Moriarty so they could finally be together... That was just too much.Well, you'd better be right about this all being planned by Moffat and Gatiss, because I know for sure...if there is no Happy-Johnlock-Ending waiting for me at the end of series 4........I'm just gonna die.Thanks again SO MUCH for doing this. I really do love your videos. As I said, I never thought deeper into this, but when I heard your explanations I always said to myself 'God, it's SO obvious when you think about it, this just has to be true!' And you even had me before I met the elephant in the room ;-) By the way, that's just another thing I saw in the show but didn't fully realize what it was supposed to tell me about the writer's intentions (although I knew the saying). Well, I guess Steven was right...I was told but I didn't listen ;-)
