The fact we’ve never gotten Apeface and Snapdragon repaints of Transmetal Primal and Megatron or TM Primal and Megatron retools of modern Apeface and Snapdragon is a crime. They’ve got the beast modes and aerial modes already; why not go all the way there?

Craziest thing about sixshot with all his transformations he has so little posing in bot mode. I have him and love him. It still is crazy

I can’t dispute the love for Hun-Grr. He’s an excellent toy, especially for the time period. Really wish you could have gotten Scattershot on the list, but can’t dispute too much else. I fully expect Power Master Prime to take the top slot for 88.

The reason the Barbie doll got the cold spark gimmick banned was because of where they put it, on the back of a pair of roller skates, that had kids run the sparks over the floor. This of course ended up setting carpets on fire and well that was the end of that.

Idk if this has been mentioned but crocodilians will usually carry their young in their mouths sometimes so Skullcruncher doing it with his headmaster is just amazing

G1 had some of the nicest looking toys in 1987. Pointblank being an example of this.

Transformers peaked in 1987. I heartily agree. I have real GeeWun, OG 1984 Ark Crew nostalgia. But those 1987 toys were big improvements on what they were doing in 1986. Still minimal posability, but still more bending arms. I had Triggerhappy and Slugslinger, and I recall just how fully greebled and carved they were.

A shame Misfire's not here since he looks rather good in that shade of pink, has a distinct alt mode, and isn't an absolute brick in robot form. I would've had him here instead of Grotusque.

My 10 - 10. Brainstorm 9. Skullcrusher 8. Punch/counterpunch 7. Slugslinger 6. Sureshot 5. Misfire 4. Pointblank 3. Hun-gurr 2. Scorponok 1. Sixshot. Note this year was a great year for transformers could have had top 20 this year easy

11:45 The Universe 2008 Sideswipe/Sunstreaker did use the two robot mode gimmick as well to allow both characters to be done with one mold, that's why Botcon or Collector Club (i forget which) did it as Punch/Counterpunch

I love my g1 Fort Max that I bought in May 1988. Still my favorite and I am so glad I finally found where in my basement he was. I even still have his box, althro I don't know why he wasn;t in it.

The Throttlebots and the microbots (supposedly human size according to the comics with a Wrestling Match) they were the last i got as birthday presents.

My 10... 10. Goldbug: Mainly only here because I have a childhood connection to Bumblebee and he's literally the same character, at least in the cartoon. 9. Fastlane 8. Cloudraker: I really like the idea of the clones, Cloudraker is slightly higher because I think the vehicle mode looks better. Fastlane is really just a robot laying down, it's not really passable as a car but this guy does a better job of being a jet. 7. Repugnus: Weird little bug guy. 6. Doublecross: I would have put him higher if he either had a different name or was a Decepticon cause that name just doesn't suit an Autobot. 5. Grotusque: I actually like Doublecross more as a dragon but again... how is that an Autobot? 4. Punch/Counterpunch: Really like the idea behind this guy but the execution could have been a lot better. 3. Pounce 2. Wingspan: Again I really like the idea of the clones and I put these guys a lot higher on my list because I think the Decepticon clones did it better than the Autobot clones. Wingspan is also higher on my list because the bird mode is a lot better than the skinny legs on Pounce's cat mode. The modern versions actually fixed the issue I had with G1 Pounce but I'm not judging these based on the Titans Return molds, I'm judging their G1 toys and Pounce just isn't as good as Wingspan was. 1. Sixshot: I feel like this design could still be better. Even the Titans Return version isn't exactly what I hoped it would be. But for the time back in the 80's this was impressive engineering. I can't complain about the original mold. And you'll notice that absolutely NONE of the Headmasters or Target Masters made my list. I personally don't like Headmasters because if you lose the head you're out a robot. Target Masters were a little bit better but for the most part these were just reissues of existing molds with a new weapon accessory so I just didn't feel like any of the Masters were worthy of my list. This is all just personal opinion, if you like the Masters gimmicks that's great, it's just not my thing. BTW I also didn't include any combiners for the same reason I usually skip them... If I'm going to add a Combiner it's going to be the entire team not an individual figure because they really aren't that great as individual toys. If you're not a fan of me devoting 2 slots each of the clones however Technobots become 1, Sixshot becomes 2, Terrorcons become 3, and everyone else just moves down to make room. Terrorcons are number 3 mostly because I have no freaking clue what the hell Blot is, I know it's suppose to be an Ogre but it doesn't look like anything and I'm always going to mark them down for whatever the heck Blot is.

I'm pretty sure Thew Adams reviewed a G1 Grotusque for Halloween a while back that had a fully functional cold spark gimmick.

Armada Sideways also has the “both factions” gimmick, but it’s not a total robot mode change like Punch/Counterpunch or Shockwave/Longarm

There's also double dealer, though in their case we got a standard humanoid robot and a robot bird for each faction.

Faction-switching, distinct "robot" modes, shared alt mode...about the only thing he doesn't do that G1 Punch-Counterpunch and Animated Shockwave did is he wasn't a spy, but a mercenary. Plus each of his "robot" modes had a unique Powermaster. Which does beg the question why the Decepticons never asked "How did you get a sentient bat to be a Powermaster (and it's not Ratbat)? 😂

I looked ahead after the disclaimer at the end of the video and yeah... it's going to slim pickings for what constitutes good Transformers until we get to 1996 cause that's when Beast Wars starts. It's all down hill from here till then.

The least we got Powermaster Optimus Prime with the 1988 release line (with Japan getting a superior retooling in the form of Godginrai). In G2, it's no surprise Optimus and Megatron have the best toys. Though G2 Dreadwing and Air Raid do look good.

@@tidepoolclipper8657 Yeah but those are SUPER easy wins considering what the rest of those toy lines look like. The hard part is actually finding 10 figures to fill out a full list. 88 and 89 are doable but just barely and after that it's going to be a lot of "I guess this deserves a spot" There's also a lot of releases in the early 90's are just reissues of molds from previous years and I think it's kind of cheating to include those but he might have to just to fill out the list cause it's slim pickings for actual new Transformers till we get into the Beast Wars toy line.
