My dad dug a hole in the side of a hill with a s shovel deep enough and wide enough to drive a full size ecno ford van in it! He built a cover over it and cover it with dirt and had the cover come out for a ways as well! It was creepy as crap inside but it served it’s purpose’

@@TKCL I believe it. Had a massive tree like yours, come to rest at corner of our roof. Took a day just to cut a path out of all the downed trees, so we could access our driveway. Hope your parents are ok. The stress and nerves alone, are getting to be too much to handle. Praying none of us get a 4th direct hit. Your shelter was built to perfection!

So glad you are safe and minor damage. Our house in Valdosta got hit with a giant pine right down the middle. My kids and wife were in the hall and I was looking out the window from the master bedroom when it got really bad And the tree came down. Came through the house and the roof and hit me and knocked me on the floor and I’m all black and blue. I Spent the next morning in the hospital. Kids and wife are all safe. But if our walls hadn’t stopped the fall of the tree from coming all the way down it would have crushed some of my family. I will NEVER stay in a house again through a named storm. If I and my family don’t have a legit storm shelter like you to go to, then we will just leave before the storm hits.

@TKCL

@@eye8shardsb419 because we left for Idalia and had an absolute nightmare of a time trying to get back home. Roads were horrible and blocked, it was so stressful. We have animals here and large amounts of stored food we need to take care of. I personally felt like the rushed traveling to leave and the dangerous road conditions coming back, were more dangerous than riding out a storm in a well built shelter.

@eye8shardsb419 I live in Pelham GA which is 1 1/2 hours from OP, and Helene was supposed to be coming my way. It turned and went to Valdosta instead. We only got a little wind. So I would say they didnt leave because the storm wasnt originally forecast to hit them that hard.

My son and his family evacuated to their NC cabin. There was little damage at their address in Tallahassee, but unbelievable damage in the area where their cabin is. God kept them safe, but it took them a long time to cut their way down to the main highway, and they had to take a very roundabout way to get home. We always think that the mountains are a good place to be when a hurricane hits. Usually it is.

Incredible builds, this is why higher building codes are important for these areas that deal with major weather. Anyone who can afford it, should have a shelter, backup battery, and solar panels if possible, even a small one. Even having small battery backups are very handy. They make a storm shelter that weighs one ton.. It is a small room with an Solid metal door.. Ventilation opening. I have it near my home so I can run power in it.. I have electrical backup for power source and can keep track of the storm as it crosses over.. I have spent many hour in that room riding out storm.. Videos, such as yours gives people a better perspective of what they can do to protect their families from such storms..

It's so good to hear that there are folks that made it through the storm. We're on the Levy/Marion county line, 20 minutes from the coast. We're in a block home, so we had a house full of people (evacuees) from places like Inglis & Crystal River. Those towns experienced major flooding from the surge. Like y'all, we only had some tree damage. We're in the country, too. We moved to this property about 3 years ago from Hernando Beach. Thankfully, we did. We've been told our old house is completely underwater. Here, our worst damage was to our chicken coop. A tree fell right on top of it. Fortunately, I had brought our chickens inside the house. Our coop is not near as structurally sound as yours. Our chickens would have died as that tree fell right on top of their roost bars. ☹️ Thankfully, I made that decision to bring them in! Glad y'all are good!! Like I said, it's good to hear some good news from fellow Floridians!

I was so scared for you guys. I, too, thought your buildings and home were toast. I also appreciate the update on your parents as I was so concerned about them. A while back, we had a big gust of wind that took our 24-foot-long carport and blew it a couple of hundred feet into a ball. luckily, we got that cut up and hauled away. That wasn't even a storm, just a very strong wind gust. I don't think we'd have come out as luckily as you did had it hit us here in Texas.

Before you take the tree down if that's what you plan on doing, use spray foam in the cavity so it don't fill up with rain. Saw it done on another channel and it saved the tree. Just a thought

I would not count your tree out yet. As a fellow Floridian who had a live oak split in our front yard from Irma.. I used a handful of cans of spectracide pruning seal on the massive 2 foot exposed section and the tree lived just fine. It kept the area from loosing moisture and rotting out. The tree curled around the edges of the sprayed area and healed itself overtime.

Will take a lot but you can help seal the oaks cavity with bees wax. Might give it the chance it needs to thrive on. Worked for me but my tree wasn’t that huge either.

@@TKCL consider a mesh network system like meshtastic. meshtastic doesn't specifically need the broader internet infrastructure to continue working. Also, if you set things up correctly, there are little to no recurring costs to running meshtastic (unlike internet).

Brother, just found you a few weeks ago. Very happy that you survived the storm. Thanks for sending her our way in central GA. No major issues here, but our daughter in western NC lost the apartment.
