Looking at some of those logs is exactly why you need a saw mill. Oak slabs can sell for a lot more than firewood and I'm sure there is some beautiful wood inside those logs.

I'm in the process of buying a new dump trailer to replace my current one, so I have just started following your videos. It looks like I am going with the same Iron Bull trailer as yours. I do not like powder coated trailers as they never seem to hold up and touching up paint is just easier than fixing powder coating, but it seems that powder coating is what has taken over the industry. I am really interested in seeing how yours holds up. I also move a lot of logs with my dump trailer since our neighborhood "co-op" splits about 15 cords a year to keep 3 families in wood. I did break the sides of my current Holmes trailer from loading many large oak logs into it over the years. I welded a piece of 4 x 6 x 1/4" tube into a "U" shape onto the trailer to pull them back in and re-welded the bottom seam that broke where the sides meet the floor. That experience makes me a little leery of the IB side design, but your experience helps to alleviate that.

I am trying to figure out the same thing. Just put in my second Firewood stand and it is about 30 miles from my home and 45 miles from my camp where I am bundling. I can get 20 bundles in the expedition without having to bring a trailer to load the stand. The reason this location is appealing is that there are a number of campgrounds in that area.
@TKCL

That's a very long haul, keep track of that fuel and value your time. 1-2 hours of driving should have value, plus the fuel. I'd also determine how often your driving and how many bundles your replacing or selling for that trip.

@@TKCL I highly recommend a drying shack be built with humidity control, once like the HomeLabs dehumidifier with comfort control (I have it and its wonderful, but there may be others better for a more industrial purpose), for after the lumber after being milled. As a surveyor we use wooden stakes to write out measurements on and we get them from a sawmill that only uses a carport like hoop structure that just keeps precipitation off the bundled wood products and is basically open to the humid air in the summer. The stakes get very moldy on the surface and we reject a lot due to that. I would have a staged drying shack with just freshly cut storage outside then after a month or so move it to the inside. This is if one intends its use for interior furniture. For exterior stuff drying outside is fine. My belief is the shack doesnt have to be heat/cold controlled just humidity controlled mainly. Some woodworkers have to keep their wood inside for a year or two before using it for furniture because of the moisture. You can sell firewood, then rough cut slabs, then dimensioned slabs, then skip planned slabs, next up is S4S wood (need a drum and edge sander for that), basically the whole range of wood finishing products.

Have you thought about lining your trailer with plywood? Prolly overkill for what your doing, but then no worries about the floor, and no rusting later after it's all scratched up. You could beef up the sides too. Granted, not a good idea if you keep the trailer outside, trapping water under the plywood... Can't believe some of that oak won't be sawn and stickered for furniture wood. Just rent a Woodmizer or find a guy to come w/one. That seems like huge $$ versus sending them up a flue 💁‍♂️
@TKCL
@TKCL 11 ай бұрын
Plywood would get crushed and trapped under the logs everytime I dump. I am considering a sawmill, we just had a hurricane hit here and trees are down everywhere.

@TKCL please think about sawing those logs... there's plenty of guys with mobile mills. Not everything has to be Acquisition KZbin content. It's a straight crime cut long straight Oak into chuncks and burn it for little bit of heat. Your other customers (who think only about themselves maybe) might love that firewood, but i'd be like, "you cut up this magnificent lumber so i could send it up my flue?!" And wouldn't be none too pleased 💁‍♂️

Red oak here in the Midwest takes a year to season (dry out to 20% moisture or less). As high as your humidity is in Florida and as wet as water oak is, how long does it take to season? I've seen red oak standing dead for 2 years here in the Midwest, still be 30% or above moisture content. If you try to burn firewood, that is above 20%, you stand a serious chance of chimney fire. I've experienced it first hand. It's really scary. Literally roaring like a freight train and shooting sparks and flame 8 to 10 feet above the top of the chimney. If you are burning firewood in your home or your shop, invest in a good moisture meter!!! Don't just test the surface of your firewood. Split firewood in half and test the center of the pieces.
@TKCL
@TKCL Жыл бұрын
We do have humidity, but we also have plenty of sunshine and hot temps. 8-12 months is a good rule for the minimum time for oak to season here. I also have a moisture meter and do test my wood. 99 percent of burning firewood in my state is outdoor firepits, so chimney fires are of no concern.

@@TKCL I’ll check back closer to Fall and see if y’all have any. I can get it here but it would be nice knowing what I’m buying is quality and I’ve seen the work you put in it. 👍
