When we went to Korea, my friend had severe allergy that her eyes were swelling. She only prepared 2 tablets for medication. 1) it took a while before worked 2) after a few hours her eyes swelled again. We tried our hardest to explain to a pharmacist her problem. The pharmacist gave an eyedrop that we can't understand but her allergies were so bad we had no choice. My friend was in total pain (she was shouting) when she used the medicine but after a minute the swelling subsided completely. It was scary how effective that medicine was.

I wish healthcare was more affordable in the U.S. I'm really, really fortunate my dad has a good job with the government and can therefore stay on his health insurance plan for 6 more years, because he has pretty decent insurance. But healthcare is ridiculously expensive here, we don't ever go to the doctor or get prescription pills unless it's absolutely necessary. A couple years ago my dad had to go into surgery to fix something in his intestine that was a life threatening problem, and had to spend a few days in the hospital. Even with insurance, it still cost a couple thousand dollars. I also tore a ligament in my foot a few years ago, and that still cost a couple hundred bucks to treat.
@orlock2010 жыл бұрын
Most countries skimp on health care in certain ways. If you get cancer in Germany or Japan, your death rate is most likely 100% unless it's very localized.Many countries also skimp on mental health, hospital beds, drugs and technology. Also countries may make you pay up to three times while claiming just one expense to the world. General taxes, private insurance plus deductible are the three costs some people pay for their health insurance. Europeans pay so much in taxes that the average person's net income would put them below the U.S. poverty line.
@christopherbennett657110 жыл бұрын
orlock20 I don't know what you mean by "most countries" but here in the UK we have free healthcare. I'm a student so I don't pay taxes, free prescriptions, free health check-up and cheap hospital bills depending on the condition.
@orlock2010 жыл бұрын
***** That free healthcare is paid for by a 20% sales tax, $7 per gallon of petrol and a variety of other taxes you are still paying even if you are a student. Also note that the UK's national debt per GNP is over 3 times larger than that of the U.S. even with a smaller military expense per GNP. All that debt is from social programs.
@christopherbennett657110 жыл бұрын
orlock20 I know it mainly comes from tax. In exchange for higher tax, you get free health care (is how I see it, I could be wrong though). Also, I don't have a car (not even a licence) so I'm not sure what you mean by taxes that I'm paying. Also, I just checked and yes, you are right; Britain does have a MUCH higher debt rate than the US. What do you mean by these social programs? I Googled it but they are not being specific. Do you mean from events (i.e. holiday decoration)?
@orlock2010 жыл бұрын
***** In The U.S., social programs include health care and welfare for the people old, poor and those with long term illnesses. Sometimes education is lumped in as a social program.

+Reah Kim Heaps of people cross borders for medical care: according to the National Population Health Survey that I read (taken by Statistics Canada) the majority of Canadians who went to the US for healthcare went to facilities in US counties that bordered Canada. Furthermore, only 20 of the 18,000 people who went, purposefully went for treatment. Plus, in the facilities in the US that were "world renown", only one of the eleven surveyed, saw more than 60 Canadians in a year.

Last year I had a pain in my abdomen that was awful for about 3 days; it progressively got worse and once I decided it was serious enough to get medical attention, I went to urgent care first. They tell me they think my appendix is about to burst, tell me to go to the hospital. I met my mom at the hospital, and we wait for roughly an hour to be seen. Once I'm taken back, I sit on a rolling bed in the middle of the ER hallway....for 3 hours. Despite being an urgent case for possible appendicitis. All I had was an IV for hydration, no pain killers. After that 3 hours I was given a CT, and then I am put back in the hall to wait for another hour. At this point the pain is still there and I'm basically preparing myself for surgery. After waiting what had to be an hour and a half, a nurse comes to tell me I don't have appendicitis but have epiploic appendagitis; a rare 'condition' that mimics appendicitis with the pain, internal inflammation, and overall horribleness associated with appendicitis. They inject me with a painkiller, prescribe some hard stuff to take for a couple weeks, then send me home. Why'd I write all that out? Well the bill for the hospital visit, which consisted of me talking to a doctor for 2 minutes total, getting a CT scan and a single IV shot of painkillers, and waiting in the hall for around 4 and a half hours cost us more than $10,000, and insurance only covered a moderate percentage; I want to say a few thousand dollars was leftover to pay out of pocket. I paid for a "doctor consultation" and for "room fees". I paid a couple thousand to stay in a hallway waiting for news. And that's not including the 5 minute conversation at Urgent care, which cost another $2-300. The American Healthcare system is baffling and I hope I never have to go through that again.

I ended up with really awful food poisoning in the US. I was throwing up so much to the point where I started dry heaving and it was just spit. I was super dehydrated and could barely move, so my mom called the hospital and they got an ambulance out and IV right away. That ambulance costed 2000 dollars plus 500 for IV ..... WHAT? Luckily, we were broke enough to get it all for free as we couldn't even near pay it. Health care in the US sucks. I now live in Sweden and only paid 80 bucks for emergency care (because I can afford it, if you can't you can get help to get it for free) because of positional vertigo (terrifying, but not harmful) waited an hour able to lay down and get anti-nausea medicine. My wait was long because they KNEW I wasn't in any dire straights, though I felt like it, lol. Also if you spend a certain amount during the year you get it free after that point. I think it's around 200 dollars on appointments or emergencies, but I'm not sure.

Healthcare is so expensive here in the U.S. so I never go to the doctor unless I feel like I'm literally going to die. Actually, I don't think I've been to the doctor as an adult. When I was a kid, I was on my mom's health insurance, so I haven't been since I was about 17 or 18 years old and I'm 27 now! I did have to go to the dentist because I felt like my brain was being eaten alive... I wouldn't wish tooth pain on my worst enemy. I've heard that's it's comparable to birth pains. And it was really expensive. Thousands and thousands of dollars here in Texas. When I lived in Colorado, dental work was a lot cheaper. So much so that we've even talked about flying to Colorado to get our dental work done lol

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and Canadian universal health care coverage is 70% but it does NOT include dental or eye care unless you have private insurance. Korea's health care is funded by government and it is also covered 70% including dental and eye. That being said, I spend 150-200 dollars for cleaning teeth in Canada whereas I pay only 30dollars in Korea. Even those molar filling are extremely expensive in Canada. I got 4 teeth done and I had to pay almost 1000dollars. If you get 4 simple fillings done in Korea it will charge you 20 bucks. Also the speed of health care delivery is extremely slow in Canada and you have to wait months and months to get some stomach endoscopy or MRI but it takes a few days to get it done in Korea. I don't know how foreigners can access health care in Korea but it is generally very convenient/fast/cheap.

Toph Uchiha I've been to a couple of weddings in Korea. Most girls wear western style wedding dresses and have it in a wedding hall, it's crazily rushed. The thing is most people buy a wedding "package" that comes with the dress, photos, hall, food, decorations at one set price. You don't do anything, it's not like in the U.S where brides spend a year+ planning every little detail. I guess this is less stressful but imo it just made the weddings look sort of ... well. These package deals usually come with a buffet and a few hours in the wedding hall. There will probably be a few weddings using the same wedding hall each day - so you get in, you marry, you get out. People don't RSVP either - you come if you come, you don't if you can't make it. You give an envelop with some cash as a gift and in exchange you get a ticket for the buffet (yes, really). Also not everyone dresses up and at least at the weddings I went to people were talking during and walking in and out during the ceremony .... There's also usually a small traditional Korean wedding ceremony after the western style wedding ceremony - but not a lot of people outside the immediate family watched this as the area was small. We then went down to a buffet area, the bride and groom thanked us and then went off on their honeymoon. All in all it was about an hour and a half in length. I told my boyfriend that when we get married I don't want this kind of wedding - we would rather just have a nice dinner with both our families and have a better Honeymoon. Probably works better for international couples anyway.

Just in case anyone is watching this in 2018, it's super different now. Almost all the hospital costs are covered by the government through your VISA, so you only pay very tiny amounts, even if you go to the doctor for tests its max $20 until you have surgery or stuff. Furthermore, if you are required to do what you go to do (for example this year we had to have a TB test) then it is totally free and I think is paid by your school.

GP in my country usually have their own building and they're not connected to any hospital at all, they check you up and if you have a fever/headache/muscle pain/nausea he'll direct you to a pharmacy (In my country these pharmacies have connections with multiple GP's in town) and if you have a possible fracture or something some serious you'll get directed to a hospital nearby. In the land of Florida~ The moment you step into an Emergency vehicle for hospital transportation that's about $1500 or so as well. Even if they don't do a single thing to you in that emergency vehicle.

In the uk healthcare is free yay but we have higher taxes than if we didn't have free healthcare but people in the uk are complaining about how the NHS is failing at stuff but they save people every day and if the weren't here my mum would have died and I wouldn't have been born and my brother could have died when being born because the corn was wrapped around his neck so he couldn't breath :(

Welp in my country we have 100% health care and it costs 35$ a month :D For families its 25$ :D Under age of 10 its absolutely free(100% also) :D and the hospitals have AMAZING service. BUT sometimes there are some doctors that may diagnose you with something absolutely crazy. So you always need to have someone who you REALLY know.

I'm an uninsured American. I can't even begin to tell you how jealous I am of your health care. It would cost a couple hundred dollars a month to get insured in my state. There are some good programs for minors and the extremely poor, but the middle class is basically told to suck it up. If you don't mind my asking, what country do you live in?

Ashlynn Shanahan I'm a Malaysian. and it is free here as well. There is quite a long que for MRI though. So sometimes people go to private hospital to get MRIs and refer that to the government hospital. The best is University Hospital. They are free and all the best doctors are there. I started to feel grateful for what I have now.

I have a Canadian friend whose mother died of eosophogus cancer. She had the tiny tumor in the throat and the doctors recommended surgery. With a successful surgery, she would have lived up to five more years. She waited for her surgery for six months, meanwhile her tumor had grown much bigger and her cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. The doctors then told her it was too late for surgery. She died few months later.

I'm so lucky to be born in Sweden and that we have almost free healthcare. it's about 100$ to get free healthcare for one year and 180$ for free medications for one year. I have rheumatism and have done 3 MRI's, 6 CT's, 3 surgerys, countless of doctors appointments and countless of times spent in the ER for treatment. I have injections that's cost 2300$ that I need to take every week. If it wasn't for our medical system I would be put to personal bankruptcy, living in the streets or live but without medical treatment and that would be the same as hell. Because I get all the treatment I can work full time, pay tax, cost less for the society and help others in need of medical care. So it's a win-win situation.

Is $200 cheap?! I obviously don't live in the real world!
@SquishyMcJones9 жыл бұрын
Nikki Polowyj For health care it's cheap, depending on where you live. My dad recently got x-rays done, and before insurance it was $1,567. That was JUST for the x-rays, it was another 1k for the x-ray technicians to LOOK at the x-rays. Thankfully my family has great insurance and it covered under Consolidated Medical so we didn't have to pay anything. But I remember before we were covered under CM, and shit was expensive even with good insurance. I remember going to ER because I was SUPER sick (I won't go into details, but it wasn't pretty) and due to it affecting my skin, you could tell. They laid me on a bed and did only the basics: check vitals, and blood tests. When everything came up "normal" they thought I was somehow lying about being sick and sent me home. It was still $255, and that was WITHOUT the cost of the blood tests, and my mom never told me how much they were. So, In Korea: Huge machine = $200 In US: Huge Machine = ~$1,700 + $1,000 to get the read. Having your vitals done in an ER = $255. Huge Machine =/= Vitals done in an ER. PRICE of Huge machine = ~Vitals done in an ER.

When I was abroad in Korea for a semester I, with my awesome luck, was sick for a month or so with a throat thing. Severance Hospital at Sinchon-dong was great. They spoke English really well (they also had plaques for Japanese and Chinese besides English on the front desk). I was a bit concerned when they gave me what looked like 2 half-liter bottles of cough syrup that I had to take 4 times a day, besides a pill...
