It’s a famous part of TLC lore - the time they marched into Clive Davis’s office at Arista, had their friends guard the door, and held their ground (and Davis “hostage”) in an effort to get the money they deserved. That is why artists nee to have a separate lawyer when dealing with your manager, and label. You have to own all your publishing. Your contract should be a one album distribution deal. If the advance is recoupable by the label. Then their should be no taxes that you pay on it.

The buisness is nothing like how it was back then, compared to now, an artist not only takes a cut from their sales, but also now their mech, tours, any other emdorsment deals. Record companies arent even making 1/3 of what they use to make, so they have to look at the source (the artist) of the income and make them work twice as hard… its really not worth it now these days, cause mentally you’ll get demolished.
