As a kid I never had an allowance or got money for doing chores. I got birthday money, money from visiting grandparents, tooth fairy money, and holiday money. I also did jobs like pet sitting, selling old toys, and selling plants we grew to our local nurseries. It was enough. I wasn’t allowed to spend it though. Sometimes we were allowed to spend it with approval though. It had to be on something that was worthwhile, like concert tickets. I never bought toys with my savings. We didn’t buy anything that we didn’t need. For a short while, I was allowed to spend a dollar on a toy or something after certain medical procedures when I was sick, but other than that, money was to be saved!!!

I'm grateful for the house I got to live in. Also you should never feel like they should deserve more if you do happen to pay them for chores. Only do what you want to do and what you can afford.
