They are not actually related to each other by their origins however, which is something hypothesized by many, even though such hypothesis are not mainstream in linguistics. Hungarians are speakers of an Ugric language, which has separate origins from the Turkic languages, and shares origins with Finnic languages in very distant past. There are very different external influences in most Finno-ugric languages that have shaped them into very different directions.

Budapest had been occupied by the Ottoman Empire, so you will see a degree of relic in architecture due that. @@karasukafka6918 Pure ethnic nationalism and racism is a european invention. Turkic countries doesn't follow such strict racial nationalism because while Turkic tribes had immigrated west from central asia, they always built multi-ethnic empires and they had been mixed with many ethnic groups. Turkish people who are living in Turkey are not genetically pure either. They are mixed with middle easterns, mediterraneans and balkan people. Yes Magyars are mixed with germanic and slavic people in time. But their ancestery surely have Asian Steppe people. And their heritage in culture and language continue. Also domination of Magyars in hsitory started with Atila and his army made of steppe horse riders. Hungarians are in europe so they are heavily infulenced by europeans while Turks in Turkey are influenced by middle easterns and mediterraneans and central asian Turks are influenced by iranians and russians. Because nomadic people are assimilated sooner or later where they settle down.

There are also historical reasons. Magyars (Hungarians) and Turks lived side by side before Hungarians migrate to Europe and we migrate to Anatolia. Some people in Turkey and Hungary suggest that we are one nation and Hungary is also a Turan/Turkic state. Even Victor Orban said that they are coming from Turks. This is not the main reason why we became allies but it really helped to convince some people in respective countries.

Most modern people in Hungary don't have Magyar genetic ancestry, and most people in Anatolia don't have Turkic genetic ancestry. Original Turkic people are East Eurasian as Turkic homeland is in South Siberia and Mongolia. But you're correct that Turkic Avars ruled Hungary/Romania before the Magyars arrived, and Magyars arrived through lands ruled by various Turkic clans. It's why Magyar/Hungarian languages carries many proto-Turkic words.

It's the oldest political trick in the book to gather people behind any idea as well as this one "friendship" between Hungary and Turkey. Turkey and Hungary were historical enemies. From about the 14th century, up until the 16th century, the Hungarian Kingdom fought against the Ottoman Empire. Traditionally, Spain, Italy and Poland generally take a positive stance on issues related to Turkey. Hungarians have adopted this behavior in the last 10 years. There has never been this level of contact between the two countries before. Of course, Orban's policy is effective in this. It is in Hungary's interest to adopt a close policy with Turkic countries. If there is such an opportunity, it is most natural to use it :) It is not reasonable to expect Hungarians or all European folk to comply with everything you call European values. It is possible to establish good relations with both the West and the East. I think Hungarians are implementing their own policy of self interest against western politicians who cannot use this.

This is the main reason Turkish empires collapsed. there were no other opponenets that were a match at those times to fight against the Turks without losing. Now these are different time and Turks main objective is not to fight but rather use diplomacy doing business and try grow economicly. if Turkiye would have bin accepted into EU, Turkiye could and would be more active in defending EU. Our history with Turkey is more complicated than that First of all, there's a famous theory that might or might not be true about Hungarians and Turks being related to each other, making Hungarians somewhat of a Turkic group. While technically, we are Finno-Ugrics, there are definitely some similarities in our languages, as well as our cultures (true, the Ottoman occupation influenced this a lot, but there is definitely an overlap between the Turanic culture found in Turkey and Hungary). The fact that Turks also consider Szekler people to be close to them and call Attila the Hun an important figure helps this a lot, since Attila is also important for us Hungarians, even if Huns are probably closer to Turks than to us. Also, while the Ottoman occupation was definitely brutal, was responsible for the deaths of many and caused a lot of problems for later (it was partially responsible for Austria-Hungary being so diverse in terms of nationalities as many Hungarians were killed during the Ottoman wars, and other nationalities replaced them), it is not a black and white situation. While Ottomans ruled over a part of Hungary, the other part was increasingly becoming a Habsburg domain, and we were falling under Austrian control. With the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" mentality, there were a lot of Hungarians who fought alongside the Ottomans against the Habsburgs, and we consider them to be heroes still (this applies especially to Transylvanian princes who were essentially vassals to the Ottomans, like Gábor Bethlen or István Bocskai). As Ottomans and Austrians were still enemies even after the Ottomans left Hungary, and our country got under full Habsburg control, many Hungarians found a great ally in Ottomans for their fight against the Austrian oppressors. We still remember how leaders of our wars of independence against Austria were given refuge in the Ottoman Empire after these wars were suppressed. Many of these Hungarians who fought against Austria in 1848-49 also fought in the Crimean War alongside the Ottomans. Funny thing is, WW1 barely factors into our relationship with Turkey, as we mainly remember WW1 as a useless and bloody war that wasn't worth fighting instead of a glorious war that we sadly lost. Also, Ottomans, regardless of how brutal they were, respected our religion and never tried to convert Protestants (well, there were the extra taxes for Christians that caused Albanians and Bosniaks to convert to Islam, but this never had an affect in Hungary). The Habsburgs, however, did prosecute Protestants, and as it became more and more serious in the 1600s, they increasingly were seen as the worse oppressor. This wasn't the case in the 1500s when it was mainly the Ottomans who conquered our territories and killed our heroes (we still remember those Hungarians who fought against them and often defeated them, like with the Siege of Eger in 1552), while the Habsburgs became the rulers of the rest of the country through marriage. After their persecution of Protestants and their increasingly heavy oppression of Hungarians who resisted them (which was often used as an excuse to take money away from Hungarian lords in order to make themselves richer), the Ottomans suddenly were seen as more reasonable. Though funnily enough, nowadays, we love Austria too, but that is thanks to Austria-Hungary, formed in 1867, where we joined together and this started a golden age for us. If that didn't happen, Austria would most likely be seen as our greatest oppressor (I'd still say that they were the greatest foe we had to deal with in history, more than Turks or Russians, but hey, no hard feelings).

@@PeterPeter-pr2hi You are quite correct about the more complex relations in history. It is especially important to understand that the partition era of three part had a complex political re;lations between tthe Austrian controlled North West, the Transylvanian Fiefdom and Otoman Empure South. Religious freedom was not really practiced in the Austrian part. For example, many of the Rákóczi 's war of independence ended up in Ottoman Empire as exiled. I would also add, you mentioned Szekely's, but more importantly and proivable are the Kun people (Cuman) which are not Turkish, but Turkic horse nomads settled in between Duna and Tisza - many of the regional names keeps this heritage. In fact up to 19th century Kunok along with Jaszok (a group that perhaps most common with Ossetians - thus a North Iranian group in origin) enjoyed a regional autonomy.

@@karasukafka6918 Interesting, I didn't even think about the Cumans when I wrote this, but that part is true as well. Interestingly, we fought against them a lot as well, before they settled down and became assimilated. As for Russia, which was mentioned by someone else in the comments, our population's view of it is more similar to that of Westerners, except for our history with the Soviets. They are either vieweed as an evil empire that was responsible for oppressing us in the past, and is now trying to conquer its previous satellites again, or they are an unsung hero standing against the "degenerate" West that wronged us in the past and still wrongs us today. Our government's ties to Russia are mainly economical though (all our oil and nuclear energy comes from Russia), but this is what people think.

@@PeterPeter-pr2hi Yep, quite correct. Russia also had deeper past with Hungary too - while recently 1848-49 is less used by Fidesz in its symbolic rethoric - the crush of the freedom fight was done byteh alliance between Austrian Empire and Russian Empire. And you are quite correct about economical ties of energy relations - but it also serves something else both to Russia and Hungary - a way to move public money into private (those selecetd ones close to the power base) hands. Paks 2 is quite questioned project in relation of how these monies being used.

The US always had an "America first" policy, so that isn't new or unusual. Also, Hungary was openly against the migrants since Syria (2015 I think), saying that migrants won't take away Hungarian jobs. Please ignore the Chinese foreign workers who work in the Chinese foreign owned facilities, and have reached such a high number that Chinese policemen are now permanently in Hungary to "help" said workers.

This relationship is quite one sided in reality. For example Hungary had no interest in blocking NATO membership for Finland and Sweden, but they did it anyway to show support for Turkey. It was really awkward, because they had to come up with fake, emotional reasons when finnish and sweden goverments asked what's the issue here. But in the end, Erdogan threw them under the bus in both cases. While Hungary was still repeating these fake reasons to delay the vote, suddenly Turkey voted yes for Finland. So Hungary had to change course within days and vote yes before Turkey, so NATO members won't increase pressure. In the case of Sweden Erdogan repeated the same thing, but this time the hungarian parliament was on a break, so they had to vote yes as the last remaining NATO member, which was even more awkward. Erdogan just doesn't care about Orbán, while Orbán is desparetly trying to find eastern allies.

Breaking the handshake agreement is cowardice, a disgraceful crime! Breaking a social taboo puts one on a path that never ends well. Especially if you are a politician, this is social and professional suicide. "My word is my honor"This is a well known rule in Türkiye. Conclusion: Erdogan will never proceed with the step she will take without talking to the Hungarians and getting their approval.

What do you know about Türkiye? Let me explain, Türkiye paid Somalia's IMF debt. When the Ottoman Empire was in bad economic shape, he donated £4,000 to Ireland during the famine. While Bosnia and Herzegovina was under occupation, Türkiye helped Bosnia and Herzegovina even though it was economically bad. For this reason, Bosnia and Herzegovina sees the Turks as a brother country. During the Armenia-Azerbaijan war, Türkiye provided arms aid to Azerbaijan. He even sent the UAVs he was going to send to Canada to Azerbaijan. It is the Turkish nation that helps Palestine the most. And more. Türkiye does not let down any country it sees as a brother. And personally I don't want to join the European Union. I hope one day we will leave NATO.

Interesting that Orban is so positive on Turkey sibce 2016, yet in 2021, Orban said that he is not sure how 2 million Bosnia's muslims are going to integrate to Europe, as if Bosnia is not part of Europe geographically and to a point culturaly.

Neither of them belong. Bosniaks may indeed be closer to Europeans culturally, but they still share this sick bond with Turkey and the middle east. There were many Bosniaks who went to serve ISIS. Yeah Bosnia does not belong in the EU, the only reason they want to is because the Bosniak muslims don't want to allow secessionist movements to happen, they want to dominate the country and call it a muslim country because they're 50%
