I don't think that every young Turkish is picky about jobs.I'm 19 and I worked in hard conditions (in my experience and opinion) in a factory as full time for a half of the average salary almost a year.Young people are just more aware of what working conditions should be normally and they want to be treated as a human,thats why they seem picky for older people who had been working under harsh conditions in the past for long times.

You are wrong! It has already been said but there is a portion of (young) people who dont want to work, learn or do anything to earn a life because Turkish parents have a very high level of protectiveness and get everything they want so they cant be harmed or influenced because they need to work. Also there is this part of (young) people who aren’t qualified to do difficult jobs but expect to be treated like if he is of the level of a scientist. I once met a young Turkish boy who had qualified himself into an online esports events. Everyone who participated got a prize money of 2500 usd. And you know what that boy done and said? As soon as his game started he tried to be eliminated so he could get his 2500 usd prize money confirmed, there was absolutely no desire to win because he said that he could never win the game and if he tried to win he needed to play 2 days that game (forgetting that he was playing for years to get there). Thats the mindset of a small part of young Turkish people. If you shout at them they say my father may not even shout at me who are you and quit whatever they were doing!

I really liked everyone's responses except for the comment about young people being "picky" about jobs. I'm not Turkish but I'm young (I like to think) and I graduated 2 years ago with a Master's degree in Engineering. If I was working in my country, my salary wouldn't be too different from the ones they mentioned in this video. Since I'm working in a developed nation instead, my salary is close 5 times that, and I also enjoy an overall better standard of living even without taking into account my salary (better public transportation, better amenities, better healthcare, better hygiene standards, better city planning, etc.). Why on Earth would I then decide go back to my country and stop being "picky" about jobs in order to do something I'm overqualified for for a fraction of the salary I currently get? This is the calculation I made 5 years ago and the reason I decided coming here was a better option for my future. It is very noble to want to change and fix the issues in your country but it should not be a given that one should sacrifice their well being for such an abstract concept as "one's nation", doubly so when there's also political issues that you might dislike in it aside from the economical ones. Besides, choosing not to work at a job with a barely liveable wage is not "being picky", it's not allowing yourself to be exploited. Even if you remain in such a country, every day you waste working for a minimum wage eternal entry level job with no future is a day you could have used trying to find a real job or starting your own business.

Francisco, I am Turkish and you are totally right about this. In Turkey engineers are making mostly around minimal wage right now which is currently equal to 267 dollars. I am a teacher and sadly teacher salaries are not much different as well. With over 70% inflation it's impossible to afford anything here working a regular job. That woman was definitely a right wing person. She can't see things clearly because of her political views. For a year now I have been working for an online teaching company based in USA and I felt like a human being for the first time in my life. I am 27 years old and for the first time I was able to afford a nice computer thanks to this job for example. Fixing this country is not my job, it's the job for politicians. We are paying really high taxes for them to fix the country but they are so incompetent. There is nothing a regular person can do other than that. That woman was just being right wing person, so she shouldn't be taken seriously. Jobs young people refuse to work for are literally slavery with over 45 hours work every week and minimal wage.

@@umut3653 Hi Umut, I'm a young person from the US so my perspective is a bit different as we tend to be more privileged in some ways. I believe youth in USA is not very privileged tbh. 80's were the golden age of the USA and after that everything pretty much went downhill as far as I can see, but I look at things from 10.000 miles away so maybe I am wrong. Usually because we can't buy an apartment we have no will to work I believe. Older generation only worked to pay for the house they wanted to buy after all. Now we can't buy a house or a car anymore so what would the new generation work for? It's not laziness as the older generation sees it, it's hopelessness.

I've met so many well educated young Turkish people at my university in Germany. They left Turkey because of the bad economical and (arguably) bad political situation. The weirdest thing for me was: Many of them (even young ones from 18-19 years old), already decided to leave Turkey and stay here, despite only living here for a few months.
@pguler
@pguler 2 жыл бұрын
Well it’s not a surprise when we think about the differences of purchasing power between two countries. In Turkey, with minimum wage you live in the hunger limit and cannot afford housing in most of the cities. In Germany, probably, with minimum wage you can afford housing, feed yourself properly, can afford a couple of beer in a pub with friends, can afford good internet connections, hobbies such computer games etc. Hence since those 18-19 years olds don’t see a bright future for themselves in Turkey, they’re even ok for minimum wage jobs in countries like Germany unfortunately. I hope it will change after the next election and the youth gain their hopes again. I’m 35 years old. My university times in Turkey was between 2004-2012. It is not a super old time. But compared to the young people’s lifes in Turkey today, there are huge differences. We were going to music festivals, film festivals frequently, did trips in Europe with limited budget. We were going abroad to get education, but it was not majorities’ dream to stay abroad. A lot of people were planning to come back. Now such things are dreams for today’s youth with the current expensive living conditions and the value of Turkish lira compared to other currencies. Hence they just want to leave.

Meanwhile, some people living in Germany who come to Turkey for vacation say that Germany is a very bad place and that Turkey is a paradise. Can you identify these people from the videos they mention and deport them? Instead, there are hardworking, talented and honest people who are not valued in Turkey. Can you grant permission to enter the country? Because of such people, they cause them to think badly of the Turks in Germany. Guess I'm living in the slums then. I was shocked by how "normal" the people in the video talked about those issues, haven't seen that in a while now. Here you either get molested, beaten to death or hit by a speeding car. It wasn't always like that tho. Back in the 1990's, it was a very peaceful place. Germans, greeks, italians, turks, asians, all living their lives side-by-side in peace. Then around 2010 a huge turkish immigration wave hit us, they bought houses in a bulk, ignored laws and forced back the police by sheer numbers. Even the turkish people living here before left the town because of all the ruckus, saying they don't want to be associated with them.

@anabergespolo8631
@anabergespolo8631 2 жыл бұрын
@@normanboyes4983 Honestly, it's a different situation for two reasons: One because Ukraine is literally at war because of their desire to align themselves with Europe over Russia, so basically if the EU turns Ukraine down after this bloody bussiness their citizens will revolt, especially citizens from the east who would see it as a sign that Europe won't stand with them if Russia tried to meddle in their countries (and these are the countries that had more euroesceptics before, which means that it would destroy decades of PR by the EU), all of Europe is now with Ukraine and no government would want to be the one seen as not standing with Ukraine, not that I think many would actually want to be the bzzkiller who pointed out Ukraine has many reforms to do before they could join the EU. Second reason, it would be A LOT easier to assimilate Ukraine into the EU than Turkey. Ukraine has half the population (at the start of the war, and hopefully after not too many people will have died to change that fact) of Turkey (who has 85M plus immigrants from war torn countries), so not such an strong fear over flooding Europe with immigration, plus their society is a lot more similar to Europe than Turkey's (socially, historically, religion, you name it it's a more western country and that would cause less issues when they entered our democratic institutions like the European Parliament, the Council, the European Justice system, etc.) and their borders limit right with ours so logistically it makes a lot more sense. Another reason why it would be a lot easier to assimilate Ukraine into the EU than Turkey is their willingness to make the necessary changes in order to be able to get in. The EU requires its nations to adhere to democratic values, and Erdogan has only made the country less democratic, not more, not to talk about the fact that he has imploded Turkey's economy and Europe is not equiped to lift up such a big country's economy. Turkey would also not be willing to change its currency, nor would Erdogan be okay with giving jurisdiction power to EU judges or securing free press. Ukraine on the other hand is DYING to make those changes, to be included in the EU and get the protection both militarily + economically, and would be willing to make those changes if it meant getting accepted into the EU. Also their economy is a lot smaller than Turkey's and it would be a lot easier to get them up to speed with Poland in 15 to 20 years, especially now when the EU has already started talking about a Marshall like plan to get Ukraine up to speed with its neighbours, a plan Canada has already pledged to support and I am pretty sure the US will chip in as well

Spent years rooting for Turkey's accession to the union against all odds, but now gave up on the whole idea. I've come to realize that leaders of the EU are just fine working with Erdoğan with the way things are. I'm saying this as a Turk. The European Union has been funding Erdoğan's regime since the beginning of the mid-2010s. Chancellor Merkel willingly carried the banner for the project. By pointing fingers at Erdogan, EU leaders can convince their fellow citizens that Europeans should strive for stronger unity and spend larger amounts on their militaries & defences because you know, there's an "authoritarian barbaric expansionist Neo-Ottoman reactionist dictator" right at their borders waiting to wreak havoc on their civilization once he finds the opportunity. EU is also fine with Turkey hosting a staggering 10 MILLION "refugees" from all corners of the third world, something Turks have been forced into both by their government and the European Parliament. Bottom line, EU now prefers this version of Turkey. It seems like it's easier for them to work with a complying autocracy rather than a democracy that is unwilling to give up on her national interests. You can hate Erdogan as much as you can my European friends, but the truth is that your leaders want him to stay for a little more while.

EU will have to accept Turkey soon if EU wants to compete with China. Some reforms has to be done inside the Turkey (economy, human rights etc) but nothing unachievable. I would hate to see EU accept Ukraine before Turkey. Even now , with Erdogan and failing economy, Turkey is light years ahead of Ukraine in any parameter that counts. I have heard some opinions before that 80 million muslims would change religious make up of Europe. I find that ludicrous. I Really perceive Turkey as a secular country, and Turks as people who are more open minded then some current members of EU (Poland ). Strategically, economically and culturally Turkey joining EU is perfectly reasonable. It would boost economy input, revive whole Balkan peninsula and fortify access to ME and Asia. Problem is that both US and Russia don't want that to happen. And i must mention, North Cyprus has to be resolved before joining.

Every country or region should not just based on non-production economy (financial, real estate, etc) alone. Economy that provides essential needs must be retained. Like Singapore, it does not have large production but it is in partnership with foreign companies that provide essential service/products. In this way, it prevents disruption in services/products availability and gauging of prices and manipulation by other countries. This is crucial for a country this small with so few natural resources to survive and prosper. Also it tries hard to minimize conflicts in cultural differences within its multicultural population.

Let me just say, that Turks in Turkey are way different than the Turks I ran into in Germany and the Netherlands. And I’ve been to Turkey 9 times in 2017 alone, along with being to Germany once in 2018, and to the Netherlands 29 different times between January of 2018-2020. The ones in Turkey, were much friendlier in my opinion, and way cooler and at ease. I also found them to be more secular than the ones in Amsterdam, Berlin or Munich for that matter, which is kinda ironic if you ask me. Incidentally, I also found Istanbul to be a large mosaic of all that is Turkey. People in neighborhoods like Nisantasi, Bebek, Beyoglu, or Emigran we’re very secular, and not necessarily anti-religious btw. Just secular, and quite CHP. Whereas I found people in a neighborhood like Kasampasa to be more conservative. You see more headscarves, and more people praying, or going to the mosque. I ran into nice, rude, smart, and unbelievably stupid people from all walks of life over there. The one thing I can say, is that being from a certain neighborhood from Istanbul, doesn’t guarantee that a given person would be nicer, or more classy (Whatever that means), or friendlier, or even more well-informed, well read or cultured for that matter. Millions of people live there, and many are from various different socioeconomic backgrounds, and not to mention various different ethnic groups, be they Turks, Kurds, Circassians, Jews, Assyrians, Arabs, Bosnians, Georgians, and believe it or not, ARMENIANS!! A lovely city I must say. I miss Moda on the weekends the most. Especially barlar sokak 😂😅🤣

@@user-ou3ln3np1g Same as you can't blame whole Russia for the insane massacre their leader is committing right now, you can't blame the citizens of the EU for the help that is missing. It's true that decisions from the leaders will have a huge impact and therefor need to be decided carefully, but most of the missing help sadly comes from corruption and connections to Putin. A few people, standing on top of millions, making the world burn. Here in Germany, pretty much every news source is openly criticising decisions that are made right now. Lots and lots of people try to help refugees on their own if they have the resources, while their biggest obstacle is the government putting stones into their ways. I am deeply sorry for what is happening to you right now, I can't imagine what you are going through. But it's hard for individuals to join forces and do something in a war this big if the government isn't willed to listen. I am sure you will understand if you think about similar problems that occured before this war, in which your government didn't feel the need to act and help either. This is not against the Ukraine. Indipendent institutions (which I think are a bit at stake at the moment, but maybe they can show me otherwise), economics and immigration. To be honest I don't have the slightest idea how to solve the last one and our leaders are doing nothing other than giving money to stop them. Too many factors as to why i think Türkiye is better off staying outside the EU. From furthering our interests (Cyprus, Syria, Iraq etc..) to cultural and geopolitical differences, there are too many things that just don't mesh with the EU. Also, in today's world where the balance of power is tilting towards Asia, i think Türkiye has already planned out its strategy for the long term. As is evidenced by the internal discord that has taken EU by the storm (UK leaving then Poland and Hungary sometimes staying in stark contrast to the EU agenda) it would be wise to not depend too much on the west. By the same token, we might already see some sort of a China-led initiative being actualized (belt-road initiative) in the upcoming years. Having a zesty slice of that cake without having any ideological intereference from the EU seems to be the way for Türkiye. Türkiye always needs to find the middle ground between the east and the west, purely by the virtue of its geopolitical position so being skeptical towards EU all the while not cutting ties with them can go a long way for the country.

The immediate benefit of the EU if Turkey gets in, is that there will be a decent amount labor force for Eu market, qualified workforce from Turkey. Especially IT industry can benefit a lot from Turkey. The immigration will be under check. Turkey has efficient security forces and if they want, it will be tough for illegal immigrants to move in and out Europe. Turkey in Eu adds more weight in the union. I really like this interview! It is very well made and the topic chosen is very interesting and controversial. From my point of view, the E.U. will probably not accept Turkey any time soon. That's not necessarily a bad thing since the E.U. isn't as great as it seems. Some of the reasons (besides historical/cultural/religious differences) why I believe the E.U. won't accept Turkey are: issues with Greece (as a Greek myself, I hope they get solved at some point because they've been going on for centuries and it's really sad) and Cyprus, human rights issues (e.g. withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention), Erdogan's policies.

@@gaspare2953 yeah that's true. Cyprus geographically is not really part of Europe. They probably included it because of Greece or something, I don't know. The old man in this video was based about one of the main reasons: Turkey has a lot of people, and its population is projected to stabilize at around 100 million people (more than any EU country). Absorbing so many people, with some underlying fear as they are mostly muslim, is something that I can't see happening in the short term. Just to be clear, Turkey is respected in Europe (where I went at least), the country has a fairly good reputation, but still, that fear remains. In the long term, just by its demography (and if Turkey reaches the gdp per capita of, let's say, Italy), Turkey could (maybe) become the largest economy in the EU. The EU kept a semblance of unity all these years because the Franco-German couple remained relatively united on important matters. Would Turkey leaders be on the same page as the rest of Europe, or will they become another UK ? Many issues. Still, I don't see it happening, maybe in some more decades.

Many people here say that religion is the main issue. I kind of agree that it may have some importance, but two main points come to my mind: 1) population size and politic balances - Turkey would be the most populous country in the EU and definitely shift the power balances among members, since many policies and votes are related to population. Germany is now the most powerful member and that would definitely not a welcome development for them. 2) territory and borders - extending EU borders as far as Syria, Iraq and Iran is NOT something other countries like, nor are going to accept. Too many potential issues and problems seem to be connected with that. About Islam vs. Christianity: Albania has a Muslim majority, but I can definitely see them join the EU with no problems, if they want and meet the criteria. But they have a small population and don’t stretch far away with their territory. Which brings us back to points 1 and 2.

I live in France and the EU isn't very beneficial to us, we represent 20% of the budget and we give more than we receive to countries like Poland who in the end buy american jetfighters instead of french one or in some countries they build infrastructures with chinese compagnies etc. We also produce our own electricity as we have more nuclear plants than any country in the World yet we must pay it at a European tarif that's supposed to benefit everyone but for us it makes it more expensive than it should. We also signed deals at a European level with countries like Brazil or Canada that produce food for much less without respecting environnemental norms. That destroys our local agriculture as they can't compete since they're much more expensive. The EU has become kinda like the USSR near its end, it is a bureaucratic behemot that only produces norms and makes sure we we don't live above our means with Germany at the helm their economy is too strong so they buy the debt of the neighbours but if the neighbours can't pay or be a client anymore it is not mutually beneficial anymore. Yet many people since childhood were brainwashed with EU is peace (now at war) sounds like the ministry of truth from 1984. We shouldn't have expanded so much, nations and their sovereignty are diluted in it and we're at the mercy of stronger blocks like the US, China as we can't agree on anything since each country has different goals and interest in mind.

@peristera mpazo Countries have their ups and downs. The development of countries like Turkey is constantly hindered by the environment. Both our position and our potential are the reason for this. I have read the articles that American analysts see Turkey's development and growth as a threat. Although we are a NATO member, it supports terrorism on our border and I am Kurdish, it supposedly helps us, but PKK terror inflicts the greatest harm on us. Although we live happily with the Turks. Russia is a separate threat, and China should not be forgotten. Not to mention the small fish around.

wow, the lady at 2:27 was on point about the political situation but not about the economic.....young people are picky b/c there is a mismatch between their credentials and the jobs offered. The academics surpasses the job opportunities. And only certain demographics are being accepted to job opportunities.....mainly Muslims or those of low social privileges are being rejected from opportunities...even here in America. The younger generations are highly educated and Turkey, having spent most of their monies accommodating immigrants (due to the request by the EU) have not been able to satisfy other commercial obligations (which includes job opportunities...etc.) But bottom line is.....America and Israel need to stop bombing the Middle East and leave the people alone. Most of Turkey's problems is from the influx of refugees and immigrants that are fleeing the terrorist activities induced by the West and Israel. It's the same situation throughout Central and South America; where their refugees are running to America due to CIA's influence with local gangs and the familia in government. Yup....America is indeed a nation that endorses a lot of these economic, political and social problems around the world....how else it's able to maintain it's international leading GDP?

I don't agree with the part you mentioned about young people being picky. As a Turk i can see most of young people here is doing their best. Working conditions are pretty hard here. That is true some people are expecting too much maybe but most of us are not actually. During summertime I am working in hotels as a cook since i am 19, i am 23 now and working conditions are really hard in my opinion. I was working 13 hours in a day and i was getting minimum wage (around 300-400 dollars). Also we were working 7 days in a week so we didn't really have weekly off day, instead of that they were giving us 4 free days in the end of the month which doesn't really worth in my opinion. But the point is, it is not only me or my situation. Almost every friend of mine around me is like that. I thought like "yeah maybe a few people can be like that including me" but no it is much more than a few. I swear every friend of mine is like it. I think seeking for an 8 hour job is not being picky. I hear this a lot from old people in Turkey. I don't think we are picky but we just want better conditions. I don't know about US tho.

Unfortunately Turkiye has been going down the wrong path these past years. The EU problem isn't only potential immigration and other things mentioned. The main issue as far as I understand it as an EU citizen of Romania is the lack of democratic standards and a worsening institutional climate, in the sense that institutions do not function independently and are subservient to political influence. In Romania we did a lot of hard changes in this regard and we still aren't up to western standards on some issues, but progress is ongoing and is even increasing in pace. I think a clear path for Turkiye to join the EU should be laid out, so that Turkiye can start from somewhere and move towards the EU politically and economically. I think that for us in eastern Europe having Turkiye as a counterweight to the big western countries will be a major benefit both politically and economically. Also considering the longstanding historical, cultural and geographic ties, we can achieve much together in terms of economic development and considering the Ukraine-Russia war, militarily, that is in the benefit of all Balkan EU members. Another issue that might impede progress is the fact that Turkiye borders Syria, Iraq and Iran, which will no longer be a Turkish problem but a EU problem. And that is another point of contention, however I believe Turkiye has the capacity to control the borders tightly and if a good track record of cooperation and implementation of certain standards are proven in time, this issue might fall off the table. Personally I wish Turkiye the best, and hope that they change this path they are on, so they can join the EU in the future.

Of course, when I thought of myself as a citizen of a European Union member country, I wouldn't want Turkey either, because Syrian-Iraqi Immigrants Are Given Turkish Citizenship, and if Turkey enters the EU, Syrians will get European Union Citizenship and face the EU Migration Waves Threat.

I love the ending with how the badass couple said Turkey can get itself out of this situation without any foreign interference. Yes! That’s the spirit of our great republic. We do not want imperialist countries like USA or Russia influencing us like it has been influencing our politics. Funny thing is Western countries and institutions always support backwards ideologies in Eastern countries so that they destabilize and act on the West’s interests just by bribing a tiny ruling class! Quite hypocritical of USA and Germany and Britain to do that. But it is unfortunatey the truth. The solution to all of this is Turkey being self sufficient and having a really stromg economy, not just debts from EU or IMF

Why would Turkey ever want to join the EU in the first place, when they've been a part of NATO since 1952, and they still are a part of NATO till today? What are the benefits for Turkey to be in the EU?
