With my gorilla fingers I broke the 2 contact phenolic piece of the e unit. Your video gave me the confidence to fix it as I was just going to replace it. I purchased a new contact and installed it as you showed all is fine! At least now I learned something good!

Wow this is amazing! I just got my dad's old Lionel 2037 Prairie steam locomotive ca. 1955 working again thanks to this video! The train hasn't run in over 20 years since my dad built a layout for me in the early 90's. It is truly amazing to see it run again!

A loose e unit lever is easily repaired. Add several drops of super glue to the rivet and washer and move the lever back and forth to ensure it soaks in really good. Mover the lever back and forth every 30 seconds or so as it dries so it doesn't dry in place. If still loose, add more glue and repeat. Just keep the lever moving, It may take 5 to 10 minutes to dry fully so keep it moving as it dries. I fixed an e unit lever that was flopping all over the place with this method. It will be as still as a brand new one if not better!

@RaRdRob Search out lock ring pliers or horseshoe lock ring pliers on the web or ebay. Sears may carry them also .If you spend around 20.00 you will have a nice set. K-D tools makes them as well as Lisle. Mainly used in auto repair- transmissions and such-TM

I recently rebuilt my e-unit ( watching your vid ) on my 2343. The e-unit cycled good when tested before installing to the train. The train will travel forwards well but not in reverse. It appears the e-unit is cycling...I can hear the humming and hear/see the e-unit moving when I interrupt power but it wont move in reverse. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not knowing exactly what you did, It is still possible you have dirty/ poor connections at the e unit fingers. It is also possible the drum unit is not rotating properly due to the ratchet pawl not indexing the drum enough or too much. Look to see if the e unit fingers are landing properly on the drum contacts after indexing. The fix is to carefully bend the pawl to either increase or decrease the rotation of the drum. It is also possible to incorrectly wire the train so as to create the condition you describe. I hope this helps-TM

I replaced all the fingers and drum. I will check to see if the fingers line up. I did rewire the engine. Having a wire in the wrong spot could be the problem. Do you know of any schematics or pictures I could download or view ? Thanks , John

Big John Go to olsens toy trains and in the library section there are schematics for individual trains and also for e units in general.
