i feel like the function of fanfic to many readers is not what the general public imagines it to be. to me and many friends, it functions similarly to the way archetypes in media are utilized - when going into a new story, the reader knows the base set of characters/archetypes that maintain certain traits and characteristics, so it’s really easy to get into new, compelling stories with that structure built in, and it’s easy for writers to craft new stories around those established characters/archetypes. it’s intimidating having to learn completely new characters and worlds with every novel you read, and trust that that author has the skills to create and use those characters effectively. it’s sucks getting halfway through a book and realizing that the characters are underdeveloped and show no sign of developing further. but with fanfic…..since the characters are already established (with each fic varying in how much in clings to those established traits), it lowers that hurdle and gives you a new story with the comfort of characters you already know and love.

so true! i always leaned onto fanfiction as a comfort because the shows and series i enjoy usually ended a long time ago and gives the fans so much to work with (i love avatar: the last airbender and the worldbuilding is such a wonderful basis to go off of). so much fanfiction is so wonderully written to the point that headcanons live more prominently in my brain than canon.

6:10 let's make it simpler for the fellas. When Brittany says "it's for the male gaze" what she means is- whatever men are doing, is usually not what women enjoy. And it looks painful af Those dudes act like they're exfoliating their finger tips
@colorblockpoprocks6973 Жыл бұрын
as a woman, that part of the vid just annoyed me a bit. i love porn, it's great fun. it's weird to shame the whole thing just because she isnt a fan of it, as there's plenty of women out there who *do* enjoy it but theyre just met with some kind of stigma lol its just unnecessary, it creates some kind of divide between women for just enjoying something, ya know?
@cinnamonroll96 Жыл бұрын
@@colorblockpoprocks6973I don’t think it’s about porn as a genre, sexually explicit stuff is not the problem. I mean we’re talking about smut here so like that is not something she or other women have a problem with when they talk about how they don’t watch porn. It’s the fact that most porn is made by men for men. And the male gaze describes that. You see it in the way it’s written, filmed and depicted. A problem being apparent in a lot of movies and not just porn. Also the most common or at least popularly known tropes come on now. Cheating, step family shit, and what not. Or also every thing a woman could look like or do is a fetish on there. And in consequence often puts the women in these very weird lights and positions, objectified completely. Also it’s completely neglecting a lot things women enjoy and their fantasies. So whilst of course women like you mentioned enjoy it, it’s not like those ppl making it, care about you as a woman enjoying it. It’s just a whatever byproduct. But not women as one the target audience. Like porn could be hardcore explicit, feature different kinks and still feature wholesome concepts and tropes or even a bit of romance. You see it in literature porn. Personally I don’t like shit like after, or fifty shades of grey bc it’s like just toxic porn with “plot”. Don’t know acotar but from what I’ve heard it has a similar reputation. But there are many smut without plot that I like or actual stories with plot that also have sex in it. But yeah again it’s not saying porn as a genre per se is bad or that there are not women that enjoy the porn that is being made for the most part. It’s more that they don’t agree with how it’s executed and done and I personally have to agree. Like the stigma around women being sexual or watching porn is also being influenced by the fact that those ppl don’t think it’s made for women and something they could or should enjoy.
@besosiriusrn5 ай бұрын
@@colorblockpoprocks6973most of the porn industry is from sex trafficking or is of rape and minors. Watching porn is extremely damaging to people and shouldn’t be bragged about. There are ways to find ethical porn (for lack of better term) but it’s still something people can get addicted to and most porn just increased violence against women
