This varnam is a speciality of the Parur school. They play the entire varnam on one string with one finger. It is a extremely difficult way of playing. But I have heard this legend play it well into his late 70s with the same vigour.

Don't want to sound as if I am contradicting you but... Yes Legendary MSG and disciples of his tutelage play varnas on one string, but not with one finger all throughout ... May be you meant it goes with one finger from certain point in the fingerboard, yes, that can be said to some extent... Nothing is impossible for MSG, if he wants to play this with one finger on one string, then it is possible for him surely, but for the range of the swaras (mandra panchamam to tara sthayi madhyamam) in the varnam, playing with one finger all throughout is almost ruled out, unless he decides to play from the top octave on the G string. Very often he played varnas like that in concerts. That too at impossible speeds. But sometimes in the normal way too (all 4 strings) - many people cant match his 1 string playing speed even when they use 4 strings. 🙂 This rendition was on 2 strings the lower pa string (D string) and aadhaara sa string (A string). The pa string (E string) was not touched. The lower sa string (G string) was only touched for sympathetic vibration (resonance). I have seen his lec dem on Bhairavi ata talam varnam on one string - mind boggling. This is the master of violin - violin has revealed itself to him totally - nobody knows violin like him. it is widely believed that there will be none like him again in this world.
