TMNT: Arcade 1Up vs. full sized Ninja Turtles arcade cabinet. I compare size, gameplay, buttons, music, and more.
See a traditional classic TMNT Ninja Turtles arcade cabinet side-by-side next to the new Arcade 1Up cabinets with and without a riser! UPDATE regarding the monitor sizes: the original is at a 4:3 aspect ratio while the Arcade 1Up is 5:4. Arcade 1Up measures at about 15.5 inches from corner to corner and the classic monitor being about 24.5 inches from corner to corner. The 1Up monitor is more vertical and flatter while the class is curved at the edges.
Also, listen to the intro music to see if you can tell the difference and decide for yourself if it's controversial.
I review the cabinet at the end and give my honest thoughts. You can then answer for yourself: is an Arcade 1Up cabinet worth it compared to a full-sized arcade cabinet? Should you buy it? How does it compare when placed side by side?

I was one quarter away, literally, from beating this game, as a kid, at the bowling alley. I ran down to get some money from my mom's change purse and ran back to the arcade, but it was too late. The count down had ended. It haunts my dreams. Donatello was the best. Leonardo was second best.

@Mike Themann "fake?" Yes. "No, it's real" No, it's fake, as in, not the genuine TMNT arcade machine, nor is it even a genuine arcade machine of any kind. "and it really plays the same game on it." No, it plays an emulated version of the game.

MaximRecoil Isn’t the emulated game using the same rom core to play the game? Seriously this is like calling an Oreo Thin a fake Oreo when it still taste, smells and feels like an Oreo.
@MaximRecoil
@MaximRecoil 5 жыл бұрын
@@BigK13372 "Isn’t the emulated game using the same rom core to play the game?" Yes, and you would have a point if the program code contained in the ROM chips was the only thing that an arcade game consisted of. However, computer code doesn't run on thin air, it runs on computer hardware. The original arcade games had custom hardware platforms for which the code was specifically designed to run on. That code can't run natively on any other hardware platform. In order to run the code on say, a modern PC, you have to write software for the PC that attempts to emulate the original arcade hardware. There's no such thing as perfect emulation, so you get things like input lag, audio lag, and various bugs, glitches, and other issues that don't exist when that same code runs natively on the hardware platform that it was written for. That's why there are currently 6,837 bug reports for MAME - mametesters.org/view_all_bug_page.php In some cases, the emulation is good enough that few, if any, people could tell the difference, but regardless of that, it's still not the real thing, which means it's fake, by definition. In addition to not having the real hardware, these fakes also don't have a real CRT arcade monitor, real arcade-quality controls, real arcade cabinet dimensions or weight, real arcade cabinet construction methods, and the graphics/artwork aren't printed in the same way as on a real arcade cabinet, which is why the printing on the control panel overlays starts rubbing off in a matter of hours, whereas real arcade control panel overlays are reverse-printed onto clear 10-mil Lexan, and as such, it's impossible for the printing to ever wear off. "Seriously this is like calling an Oreo Thin a fake Oreo when it still taste, smells and feels like an Oreo." No, it's like calling an "Oreo" that you made at home with the wrong ingredients and procedures a fake, and it would indeed be a fake.

I own the Arcade 1Up cabinet. I absolutely love it. But I just happened to see the original at an arcade a couple days ago (hadn't seen one in the longest time). I was shocked by how different it was. The screen is much bigger and there's just something about CRT that brings back the memories. Also the buttons being convex vs. concave actually does change the feel. So, it is quite a different experience. But given the price and upkeep of a real arcade machine, I still love my Arcade 1Up. I just absolutely love it. But seeing the differences in person was really a shock.

The pixel art was always designed with the CRT display in mind and there's nothing modern LCDs can do to replicate the look of it IMO. Larry Bundy Jr Yes the US cab is nice but I have fond memories of your style.. Gauntlet at my local sports centre back in the day, good times :) The original hardware is getting on a bit, green screens are one thing but mine suffered audio issues. Due to how the pcb’s are multi layered they often end up beyond repair. I had to source a replacement board with mine. Was a Hero’s board so I swapped out the chips to change to Ninja. Even that board has the odd audio glitch on stage 2 :(

Perfect video. I’m so glad that you’re being open to the goals of the 1UP cabinet, and appreciating it for what it’s trying to do. As a kid growing up taking trips to the arcade with my cousins, along with being a huge TMNT fan, I’ve always wanted a nice beat ‘em up arcade cabinet. But the size, maintenance, and cost involved in a proper machine made it unfeasible. These 1UP machines are perfect for me - built with love and respect for the original cabinets, maximizing value for the money, excellent emulation and screen quality, optimizing size and playability, and upgradable parts throughout. Not to mention you get the original and Turtles in Time! Just fantastic. I’ve ordered my 1UP TMNT cabinet, and I can’t wait for it to arrive!

I dont understand all the hate on these cabinets. As a gamer these are perfectly fine to decorate your apartment and kick around a bit. I game A LOT and these are awesome. All the elitists i totally understand but not everyone has space or the money to own the original. They weigh about 300 hundred pounds and could go in the thousands so come on really?!!!! OR build your own. For me no thanks. I appreciate what the company is doing bringing these classics to us 30 somethings. The nostalgia effect is REAL. This Ninja Turtles arcade game was originally a Crime Fighters (25" inch) cabinet. Although... Punk Shot, The Simpsons, Vendetta, Sunset Riders, the sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, G.I. Joe, X-Men, Bucky O'Hare, the Wild West C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa, Mystic Warriors: Wrath of the Ninjas, Martial Champion, Metamorphic Force, Violent Storm, Run & Gun, and Fisherman's Bait: A Bass Challenge also shared the same cabinet.

My least favorite part about Arcade1up is how the games just clearly look like emulation. How hard would it be to add a shader or filter option in there to add scanlines, add that slight crt convex look, and adjust the colors to match the original? Even Retroarch on my Xbox Series S can run basic shaders. My TNNT on Retroarch looks damn near identical to the original cabinet in this video with the use of the crt Geome shader that I've modified a bit. Only difference being that mine has the newer looking colors, like the 1up version has. I personally can't stand the super clean emulation look.

These sold out pretty fast and they never did another batch, kind of happy about that because i was going to get one... but a few sites offer kits that are higher quality and you can have the same art. Sure it cost more but it's also a more permanent solution, these things are cool but ultimately kids toys.

Picked up this bad boy today. You can definitely play 4 players with enough room so you're not squished. Though if certain players are over 200lbs it might be a problem.

the 1up one is supposed to be 3/4 of the size but it looks more like 1/2 of the size in comparison.
@ThePhanJam76
@ThePhanJam76 5 жыл бұрын
They're supposed to be 3/4 scale, which, if roughly measured in volume assuming all dimensions are exactly 3/4 of the original (which they aren't as you could see from his measurements in the video), then you're correct - it actually should be less than half the size of the original arcade cabinets, with a 1:0.42 ratio. They still managed to find a good size that accommodates up to 4 people playing at the same time so props to arcade1up for that.

Your monitor isn't crisp or bright because you haven't calibrated it at all... 1) Turn up the red gain. That's why the top of the turtles logo and the Konami logo are so dark and colorless. 2) Turn up "brightness" / total bias. That'll bring the details back out of the dark areas that are currently consuming them.

You can put it on a riser, which makes it taller. I did that in the video when I measured with the tape measure
@thespaceram2879

Yeah because without the riser it is 4 feet tall as seen in the beginning of the video. Which looked way too small next to the actual original cabinet. The original cabinet must be like 30 years old.

Why would you want such a useless feature in a arcade game?
@gamephreak5
@gamephreak5 4 жыл бұрын
@@ClassicGamer9044 It's not a useless feature. It adds to the authenticity and raises the nostalgia factor. Personally, there isn't a really good CRT filter for LCDs. There's some that have come close, but they're always a bit off. Since the 1upArcade monitor is HDMI, you could get a HDMI scanline generator that gets the job done OK, but there's more to a CRT than just scanlines, like color bleed, chromatic aberration, and the glow from phosphors that affect how a picture looks. If 1upArcade could make a CRT filter for their machines that's as close to emulating the glow of the phosphors on a real CRT tv, that would definitely bring their machines to the next level. Classic sprite-based arcade games aren't supposed to look so clean and crisp like on a LCD.
