You know another character that would make a lot more sense to have the desire to longer be a mutant over Donatello? Splinter, in this version of the series he was a human before he became a mutant. So if he was no longer a mutant he would just become a human again and lose none of his identity like it would for the four turtles. In fact he would actually be able to leave the sewer and actually have a life if he became human again.

Aw, that tattoo character disappointed me a little. I mean, they have a guy with tattoos, named tattoo, and they chose a hamster as the animal he mutated from? :/ The armadillo is literally called tattoo in french. If they'd made him an armadillo he would have been the mutated tattooed tattoo: Tattoo! :D

I think in the '87 series, the idea was that animals (such as the turtles, or the mole and bull) are already intelligent in their own way, it's just that the mutation gives them the ability to better communicate with humans. Like how in the first episode, the turtles resent having lived in a fish tank for so long.

This episode is special for me. My grandma recorded it for me on VHS. The tape also had the Mondo Gecko episode and the 1st episode of the Back to the Future cartoon. I watched it repeatedly and still have it today, complete with 1992 commercials.

How I'd write an episode like this Tattoo, another goon who was in Bebop and Rocksteady's gang goes on a rampage. The Turtles trace Tattoo back to Bebop and Rocksteady to uncover Shredder and Krang's scheme of the day. Shredder and Krang think more troops would be useful, so taking 2 more members of the Bebop and Rocksteady gang and mutate them into Groundchuck and Dirtbag. As now it's 4 vs 4. This would be the part where the Turtloids come in, they crash land on Earth after escaping their home planet who's people were enslaved by an evil Overlord. Shredder and Krang attempt to team up with this evil Overlord whom gives Shredder and Krang blueprints to build Chrome Dome. The Turtles try to work with the remaining Turtloids to free their enslaved brethren from the Overlord, Shredder and Krang. It's not a perfect story, but it's a better plot than what we got and it works in all the crappy toys they shoehorned in

I didn't ninjagos overlord was a dimension hopper lol but still this is a good idea but it's not the type of story that the 87 turtle series does and not in season 5 no less at that point the show was not doing big and serious storylines but still this story would be great for a new ninja turtles series like a small storyline like what 2003 series did with the alien war they build up to it and it was great so this a cool idea but it doesn't fit the 87 show maybe the red sky season but no those season suck I hope you understand

In the old TMNT Donatello was really a wimp. In such cartoons the brainy character is always either the weakest or most cowardly, or both. Even Michelangelo the hedonistic turtle was more brave. Heck, one episode Leonardo says something about going down fighting like real turtles, and Don tells him he'd rather go on living like a mock turtle. But yeah, it really doesn't make sense that he never worried if he got turned back into an ordinary turtle he'd lose his intelligence. Michelangelo once turned into human teenager, and he lost his strength, and learned being human was "totally bogus". Even Splinter learned it after he was transformed temporarily back into a human. But whatever, I'm female what I think about a "boy's cartoon" doesn't matter. Just like it doesn't matter what males think of a pony *cough* girl's *cough* cartoon.

4:10 This line is the most frustrating part of the special, because it gets our hopes up that the story will go in a much more interesting direction. What if Shredder HAD been experimenting with mutagen again, and was creating an army of mutants? They could use it as an excuse to bring more of the action figures into the show, and instead pf the dumb gold-eating alien turtles, we could have had a huge battle royale with mutants of all shapes and sizes.

The more I look into this series I start to have this growing interest with the whole "Mutants" idea. In fact I was thinking of adding that into a project I'm working on. Maybe I'll try to work more on this idea and see if I can revive the similar idea.

To be fair, even though Bebop and Rocksteady were mutated from humans because they were in contact with a rhino and warthog, they now share the memories of both. At least that's how it was in the Archie comics. So that line can be forgiven here.

In a way, I can SORT OF understand what they were doing with the gold reference so hear me out; Turtles, like all other reptiles, are cold blooded and they could be going for 'the gold reflects off what little light whatever source the planet is using as a sun and thus produces the heat that turtles would need to regulate their body temperatures' sort of deal which, had it been done right, would have been cool. It would have made the gold VALUABLE but for a different reason, as not for it's monetary usage but the fact that the turtles indeed needed it to live or they would freeze to death. See, that would have made sense rather than saying it as if the turtles used the 'energy' of the gold ITSELF to live as if they didn't have other things such as food and water. And it would have been used as a conflict had Shredder learned of it and teamed up with the two backstabbers to steal the gold and use it as money but meh. Can't say anything about it now, it's been like 24 YEARS since this episode was on, wasn't it?
