$55 for a ultimate super seven figure is not a lot of money these days especially compared to video games
@jeremiahnapier25163 ай бұрын
Man, I feel like I was waiting your review for eternity. But it's finally here. About the figures - I wish Super7 were more creative with their choices about tmnt incarnations - like Neca did back in 2008, when they started a Mirage line and after ban from playmates, they started making arcade stuff, movie and cartoon exclusives until they got the rights through nickelodeon. And even then they decided to make some obscure stuff from Archie or IDW. I mean, when I see names of the products like "ninja April" or "Karai ultimate" that ties in with 80-s, but doesn't have much equivalents for both of them (like April is only in Archie as Karai in Mirage), I always picture their interpretations from TMNT Tournament fighters on Sega (or Snes). Like, come on, they both appear as fighters, have very vintage 90-s look to them, would have some nice effect pieces as accessories, unique and not overused incarnation. And due to the sheer popularity of the games itself it will play on the nostalgic vibes of the collectors, because for most of the sega owners, this game took a chunk of their childhood and gave very joyful memories => they would want it (like Neca did with Alien Arcade line). And if they did that, giving April some unique accessories from this set aside from effect pieces, and gave Karai bulk and imposing design from SNES (giving both figures a unique sculpt in a process) with an extra head with glowing eyes, spitting lightnings, they would definitely be more accurate with playmates stuff. Because right now they look like something from 2003 playmates line - bold, with sloppy paint work and awkward in comparison to some good figures like Muckman, Baxter, Mutagen man and etc. Good, but not desirable. Because when Neca did the reuse thing with Traag and Granitor it was understandable - they minor in appearance, but colourful and imposing in sculpt (besides, people remember them more from the arcade, not cartoon, so difference in body shapes are not that important). 44:58 I would assume that they've done it in attempt to copy Neca's Lotus figure - it comes with a masked head and a lot of collectors (like Fwoosh) were talking about transformation in a female ninja troop army-builder. But the aspect they forgot is that naked neck, while in Lotus case it was covered with scarf. And the other thing that it was a basic balaclava instead of full foot ninja mask from 2003. 54:04 she had a kusurigama in 2003 series and in the recent Shredder's revenge. And despite your statement that this figure is based on the cover of Mirage comics, I would tend to assume that this is more of a mix-match from Mirage (outfit) IDW (your scarf reference) and 4kids animated series (foot head, kusurigama, the design of her jacket with pelt being underneath instead of the front and her head sculpt reminds me more of the cartoon version due to the angular shape of hair - the comic one on the cover has more pouty lips, different eye angle and a different hair colouring). But, in all history of selling action figure in toylines for boys, there is an axiom that female characters have lower sells due to the their fragility and lack of crazy sculpts or awesome detalization, while they dive more into realistic shapes and attractiveness, making them more like dolls, not AF. So, in terms of one wave, make two female figures, reusing the sculpt from already "merely okay" figure just to cut losses for almost 50-60 bucks with a few average accessories? This is wild in a bad sense. Nonetheless, great and detailed review as always. Looking forward for you Neca reviews (especially April 2.0). Was kinda expecting Karai emerging from the sofa at the end of April's nightmare.
@razrentals88973 ай бұрын
@@jeremiahnapier2516 thanks for coming back! I didn’t even think about the tournament fighter games but both Karai and April were cool looking there. Karai pretty much has the mirage outfit plus some knee pads and something on her lower legs. If they would have went all the way with that it would have been better. Make this figure purple instead of black too. It would have fit in better with the shredder and foot soldiers colors as well. I bet they wouldn’t give April that suit because they’d say it was too revealing or something haha. I assumed that’s partially why they didn’t go all the way with Ninja Newscaster April. I disagree with you on one thing though and that’s the 2003 influence. Maybe the kusurigama, and foot head were, but I don’t think the pelt being behind the pads was. That screams cheap and easy to me. It would be so much easier to just make the pads on top and sculpting the pelt on the body than creating the middle pelt on the outside. If they were trying to give her more of a 2003 spin than I think they failed at that because it didn’t even pop in my mind. She has much more armor on her legs in that show. I do agree with you on putting two female characters in a wave of a series that’s built on mutants and monsters will test some collectors patience . Especially when they’re human characters with basically the same exact sculpt and with very little interesting going on with their designs. I mean seriously two color swaps of the same design make up half the wave. Even if you love the figures you gotta admit that’s pretty boring. I mean if it was like Karai and then Mona Lisa or Ninjara I’d feel much better about it. Jeez Neca could release two two packs made up of female characters next haulathon and I bet most people would be excited about it. I know most of us weren’t too excited about the female characters when we were kids (I’ll admit I wasn’t), but now that I’m older some female characters are really sought after. I was looking forward to Mandora and Chilla in Thundercats, Lotus Blossom and Mona Lisa from the Fred wolf series. White Rabbit in marvel legends! Heck everybody’s been begging neca to make tempestra, the major problem is super7 keeps dropping the ball with their female figures. I actually shot a 5 minute piece talking about that for this video but decided to cut it because I thought the video was long enough haha. Basically their females are a lot stiffer looking than the guys, most of them have very little detail or definition, they never turn out like the promo shots from the preorders (with Cheetara and steelheart being the worst) and I think they build them off of larger figures legs. This causes the hips to be way too far apart. If you look at Pumyra her hips, thighs, and I think lower legs are the same size as Cheetara’s. Pumyra was a very tall figure. She was taller than Liono, but then super7 shrunk the upper torso on the other female figures to make them shorter than the dudes. I should have left in my thing about it haha. I think April and Karai are still built on these larger sized hip joints which is why I think they’re legs look like they belong on bigger bodies. I also think they’re torso articulation is useless and Cheetara should have had a waist swivel. She’s a runner! She needed one. Sorry for the tangent.
@razrentals88973 ай бұрын
@@jeremiahnapier2516 I hope to make a review of neca april 2.0 sometime soon! I’ll admit either Karai or something worse would have been a funnier/scarier ending. I really had a lot of fun making that scene with her diving up the villains haha.

It's a shame that this is, in terms of her original design, the best Karai figure we've ever gotten. Every other figure either puts her into Shredder's armor or is based on a radically different design from the Mirage or 2003 series. Definitely glad to hear you're doing a review of new NECA Ultimate April and the Remastered Turtles from Playmates, those are the figures that finally got me to start collecting. They actually scale together pretty well with April when you consider how in the early Mirage comics and early seasons of the 87 cartoon the Turtles were depicted as being much shorter then April, only about as tall as her shoulders.

@@Plumbers_Helper that’s awesome that story scale together better now. The first release of April was a bit too short. My goal right now is to get what I consider to be the "core" characters in the TMNT franchise. So far none of the Fred Wolf characters I want are over the retail price besides Shredder and Krang but NECA is coming out with a Ultimate Shredder this year and the Krang from The Loyal Subjects looks like a decent substitute. I'm sure once I start getting into less less popular characters like Dirtbag and Groundchuck things will star getting pretty expensive. The only NECA figure so far that I'd like to have but likely never will is the blue Renet "variant". Very annoying that they used the incorrect red coloring from the Color Classics reprint for the normal Renet figure. I also got the Mirage Splinter figure for lower then the normal retail price. Even at the normal retail price NECA's Mirage Splinter is far cheaper then the Fred Wolf Splinter is these days, he's probably the most expensive "core" character from 87 cartoon now. Great review! Karai looks better than I expected--I might end up getting that one. I only preordered Leo from this wave, which is crazy since I was fiercely loyal to this line up until this point. Like you said, the line's identity just isn't there anymore, and I've started to lose interest. I heard they're not using the Four Horsemen to sculpt this line anymore, which might explain the softer details and overall simplified designs. Also totally agree that Karai was probably designed first, then reverse-engineered into April. That would explain the large, gappy shoulders designed to move around Karai's shoulder pads. And the torso, which was most likely made smaller to look natural with the overlaid padding. We'll see where this lines goes! I know they're alternating 2003 waves, so we'll see if we get any more Playmates figures in the future. Even if we did, they'll be altered like Rappin' Mike and Rat King, so it's just not quite the same. I really like what Mondo is doing with their soft vinyl line--doing obvious Playmates designs, but letting the designers go crazy with them, giving them the life and spontaneity of the original Playmates toys but also pushing them into slightly new/enhanced directions. They look really fun! Just damn expensive. 😅

If you’re alternating between water down playmates designs, new designs, water down mirage designs, and 2003 figures how can the line ever expect to get anywhere satisfying. We’re only getting like 12 figures a year. After the Guerilla gorilla wave finally comes out all we know is 8 figures are coming. 6 are turtles, ones a foot soldier variant, and one is a brand new human characters. The next time we may see a villain or mutant character in our hands could be 2026. I really like what mondo is doing too. Really awesome designs based off classic figures but new and interesting.
