TMS Therapy Used to Treat Severe Depression | UC San Diego Health

Teresa Lindhardt, 55, had major depressive disorder, also called clinical depression. It affects how a person feels, thinks and behaves and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. It is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for people ages 15 to 44, affecting more than 16 million American adults, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
After six weeks of daily treatments with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) at UC San Diego Health, Lindhardt said she was free of the symptoms of depression that disrupted, and twice nearly ended, her life.
“For me, this has been the most life-changing thing that has ever happened,” said Lindhardt.

Zafiris "Jeff" Daskalakis, MD, PhD, FRCP, is the chair of psychiatry at UC San Diego Health and internationally recognized expert in treating severe psychiatric disorders with magnetic brain stimulation, also known as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
