How To Make An Artisan Bag On a Dime with Upcycled Materials

Have you ever longed to have a beautifully handmade, one of a kind ornately decorated purse, but to buy one from a specialized artist would costs hundreds and hundreds of dollars? (I've even seen them well over a thousand). I'm here to help! I made and sold hundreds of bags over the years, I've retired from selling and now I just teach how to make these beauties!
In this video I teach you step by step (on a dime) how I create this romantic boho chic purse. We will cover so many things that I consider this more of a class. You will learn how to decorate the purse, make a strap, create lining with pockets and magnetic snap closure, make a strap from scratch, sew beautiful embellishments, make loop fringe and so much more.

I can’t thank you enough for your inspiration. I bought a white gauze dress on sale that was too small. Instead of taking it back I have made a great skirt. You have made me unafraid. I laugh when I take the scissors to a piece of clothing. I bought a summer blouse and hated the ruffle on the cap sleeve. Instead of donating I cut the ruffle and left the ragged edge and love the shirt. I’ve made a beautiful purse. Oh wow, that sounds just gorgeous! It does take courage to grab the scissors and start cutting, doesn't it! So pretty, so shabby chic! I made a similar bag years ago - a lot smaller, from offcuts from a special outfit I made for a wedding. It was loose baggy trousers and a long top with curved overlapping flaps, all made from silver-grey satin, with a sheer kimono on top with an applique and embroidered butterfly on the back, using metallic fabrics and threads. I made a smaller butterfly for the flap of the bag to co-ordinate. I wore silver shoes and had butterflies in my hair to complete the ensemble! The top of the bag under the flap had a little elastic in a casing to give the effect of a drawstring bag, closing the opening a little but still making it easier to access the inside of the bag. It had a long corded strap to be worn across my body underneath the kimono. The bottom was trimmed with a small quantity of long beaded fringing which was left over from another project. The weight of the fringing kept the bag closed and there was no need for a fastening. I just loved making the whole project!

Just watched this again, Traci - last night I removed the lace from around the edge of an old quilted hot water bottle cover, thinking I'd keep the lace and ditch the fabric, but then I thought it would make an ideal little bag much like the shape of yours in this video! Because the flap is already attached to the back of the bag I needed to see how you dealt with the linings of both bag and flap and I think I know what to do now! I am covering the whole thing inside and out with other fabric as I don't like the existing quilted fabric, and this will form a padded interlining for the finished bag. If I can make it work I think it will be amazing!

Traci, this bag is awesome! The timing of this tutorial couldn't be better. I just found in my stash a tote of seam bindings I got 18 yrs ago from a Country fabric store auction, plus the lady was a hoarder so roomfuls were going for very cheap. I also had decided my next bag fabric was a beautiful vintage floral upholstery fabric. I can not thank you enough for getting my creative juices going again.

Hey Traci! Just wanted to say thanks so much for your videos! I find inspiration in each one and now you have me hooked on upcycling! 🙂 Also wanted to pass on a little tip a friend of mine gave me when hand pleating or ruffeling. She suggested that I cut a strip of cardboard packaging (doubled if I needed more strength for thicker fabrics/trims) and use it to pleat/push the fabric towards the needle. This keeps your fingers from getting so close to the needle. Hope you find this tip helpful! TFS!
