Nice video - I bought (7) wedges on Ebay for $23 and just wired brushed and sharpened them Next I will paint. I found an axe on the edge of a log with hammer works great to split large logs. Take care and be safe!

I have severe back problems at age 60, but i still split about 2-3 cords per season. Yes, it is easier to turn the thermostat and not touch the log 6 times on the way into the stove, but i completely enjoy it for some reason. Im just finishing up 28" sections of a fallen tree and love to think out each slice and the fewest hits. Crazy? Not sure i am.

Sweet wedge, Matt! This was a really fun video on something I have not seen on the sharpening bench. What a am really excited to see is more on the platen upgrade you mentioned. Clearly there is more to my 1x30 than am using. Ceramic belts, belt progressions, and the flat grind. Looking forward to what’s next. Thanks for all you give to the sharpening community.

Thanks Doug! I'm sure you'll get a wedge across the bench sometime, though they don't come across my bench much either. I'll post a picture in the Guild with the work I did after the recording, cleaning that mushroom off the top. And yeah, I'm excited about the platen upgrade I'm working on too! I need to run with it for a while to see how it performs over time. More to follow!

Splitting wood with hand tools is great for your physical and mental health. It is also probably faster than using a hydraulic splitter. After a good work-out you feel great and you sleep very well at night.

Wasn’t expecting TNG to return so soon. Great to see. I’m definitely with you on liking to split my own wood (with an axe). As a friend once told me, if you work that way then your firewood will warm you twice ;)

Matt your not crazy. I my self have never had to split wood to heat my house. Its crazy to me that people would think you are crazy. I have worked in a shop with 200 plus people. I could tell you some crazy stories. But many and more often the not once you understand the unique situation that the person was in, things don't seem as crazy. So at the end of the day if your crazy, I want some too.

Glad I saw this. Numb me I spent days on a grinder getting rid of the mushrooms but have never sharpened the wedge. I wonder if sharpening the wedge will reduce the formation of the mushroom. Likely not worth wondering. Thanks for your time on this, I enjoy the commentary.

Thanks man, I think I'm going to take this outside before I send it home and clean off that mushroom with the flap disc on the angle grinder. My hunch is that even with a sharp edge they'll still mushroom out over time.

You can cut the mushroomed part of the wedge with a angle grinder and it will be like new

Yes! After the video I did that and am glad I did. I used a cutoff wheel to clean up the sides of the wedges then a flap disc to blend it in and make it clean. I did notice some cracking in the wedge and I balanced removing the parts that had cracked while preserving as much life in the wedge as possible. Great point, thanks for adding that!
