There may be something to this. I put up a decorative windmill out front for my wife. Come to think of it, I haven't seen any moles out front in several years. In the back yard there are still moles.

I find it seems to work for a relatively small area. With 5 acres I can’t afford that many windmills. But at least I’m keeping them away from the lawn around the greenhouse.

First, from one "middle age" youtuber to another, great job on the special effects! Had a neighbor with about 50 pinwheels in her yard. I suppose it worked but looked more like lawn art . BTW I have a Labradoodle for hire that will dredge up those Moles for you, she would only leave 50 foot long 2ft deep trenches.

I blew the annual special effects budget all in one go. Ha, I kind of snickered when I read on the box "attractive lawn ornament". Tempted to rent the Labradoodle, but my experience with them (neighbor has one) they are hyper and bark near constantly. I hope he cuts back on the barking as he gets older.

My mole remover we plow the garden while disposing of them. Best of all she does it in places you didn't even know you wanted a garden there.

Im skeptical about that method.... I've been wondering if a heavy lawn roller with spikes would go deep enough to instantly end the moles in my yard. It's too much to spend on a wild idea for now though...

Was just writing to DeanBarr below how I do have a backup plan in that I hope to be purchasing a tow-behind lawn aerator with big spikes.

Hey that's kinda cool! We make whirlygigs, I wonder if I mounted them on a ground rod would it work? 🤔 Wr have a wind and rain warning here today. Supposed to go up to +12°c by lunch time. Still haven't used my T25 to plow any snow this year!

Was actually going to try and build a whirlygig myself... I can't see why it may not work just as well (assuming the windmills work). Think they have a bunch of snow up in Moncton.

I hope it works as well... I do have one more idea up my sleeve potentially... I'm considering buying a big tow-behind lawn aerator with some big old spikes on it. For the lawn of course, but if a couple moles get caught up in the action, all the better.

People I know have had mixed results with whirlybird things. Granular treatment works the best but it kills all worms and grubs and moles leave because there is nothing left to eat. I don’t think there is a perfect solution unless it’s a dog who digs up the little critters but leaves holes. Thanks for sharing.

At the house we had a neighbor's cat that caught moles for sport. I really need one of those cats to take out to the farm. There are some benefits to having moles I''m sure, but I sure hate mowing over dirt piles all summer long and would love to see them leave voluntarily.

Having moles in the soil of your property is a sign of healthy soil. Moles actually improve soil structure! As a gardener I try to maximise the amount of moles in my soil, not remove them!

Quinten, very much appreciate the counter perspective my friend. Makes me feel a little better. I'd be happy if they just moved further down the hill and off the 'main' lawn :) Thanks for taking the time to write your thoughts.

I agree the moles like healthy soil, it's a problem if you need to walk over it.

Does it work?

It does work... to a degree. I would say it can be useful in a small area. I have now had these installed going on a year, and they do keep the moles away from the windmill location, in my case, I would estimate 25-30' radius. But, given that I have 4.5 acres, it just pushed them out another 25'. So I moved the two I have both up by the greenhouse just to keep them away from that, but gave up on trying to drive them off the whole property. I hope this is helpful.
