They wrote this song about their former band member Syd Barrett who lost his mind due to him taking to much acid. This song is on the "Wish you Were Here" album which also is a song they also wrote about missing Syd. Actually the whole album is pretty much about Syd.

I’m sure others here have mentioned it already, but this song is just a cog in the wheel of an entire album that has to do with mainly one subject. One of the original members, Syd Barrett, who lost his mind and then his health, and this album is about their journey with him into the music business. Taken out of context and listening to just the song, really does it no justice as the entire album should be listened to start to finish

I love the green screen - it works well for the song. Many of PF's songs are best served as part of the whole album - but this works. The Live In Pompeii version is also really good. Do a Live Live - Delicate Sound of Thunder, Pulse, Remember That Night, but especially Live in Pompeii (The newer one, not the older one). The song is about former band member Syd Barrett - who ended up with mental illness. Syd did lose himself.

Ugh - what a trip, huh? My favourite Pink Floyd song and probably my favourite song ever! Beautiful thing. It perfectly expresses the sad memory of their friend Syd Barrett's story. And Dick Parry's saxophones at the end bring tears to my eyes every time... By the way, you have the perfect backdrop for another Pink Floyd song (with an official music video): Marooned. It's an instrumental song without lyrics, but Pink Floyd won a Grammy for it in 1995. Really beautiful guitar by David Gilmour - try... But next time turn off your rocket motors - they interfere a bit with listening to the songs :-).

This track is an absolute certified masterpiece. Written for their former bandmate Syd Barrett, who spiraled into a very serious mental illness, after their first couple LPs. If you're going to get into PF, you should know the story, because a large chunk of their most prime material is dedicated to, and inspired by him. I would be so totally down for a the live stream. Congratulations! You have joined the rest of us who have been initiated into the pure ethereal beauty that is Pink Floyd. What you are listening to is not frightening. It is the deep impact of music on humans and it connects us with the planet. It is deeply spiritual. Try listening to it again and watch the earth from the window of a spaceship. The track itself is a lament for Syd Barrett, who suffered so badly with mental health problems he could no longer be the incredible influence he was on the band. If you want to explore more of their music, just you wait until you hear the female vocal on dark side of the moon. The vocalist tells a story without singing a single word. It is going to blow you awaaaaaaaay :) x

Thanks for the reaction. Your into some next level music with the Floyd. When the band was formed their lead singer, songwriter and guitarist was Syd Barrett. He was very charismatic and handsome. But he went mad after their first album, some say do to LSD. They were young and ambitious and replaced/left him. Getting his friend David Gilmour (who is playing guitar on this song) to fill his shoes.. They struggled trying to find their way for about 6 years. (Barret left a huge hole) Finally they found their voice and hit it big with DSOTM. They struggled in the studio for the next album and inspiration (Lots of pressure from the label). One day an overweight man with a shaved head and a lost look in the eyes showed up. They kinda ignored him each thinking he was with someone else. Finally one of them recognized him and it was Syd. They were all in shock at what he'd become. His story, their guilt of leaving him on their quest for stardom and the music biz is the inspiration they finally found for the album. I think they all struggle with wishing they'd have done more to help him. I may have got some small bit's wrong but thats pretty much the story.

It's always fun to watch people listen to classic Pink Floyd for the first time. People get this look like "what the hell is this I'm listening to?" And slowly get reeled in. It's like Pink Floyd has come up to you, leaned over and beckoned to you with their finger saying "Come along, follow me" like some sort of Pied Piper. And you really can't fight it, you just have to follow wherever they take you. And where they take you is often deep within your own thoughts. And if you think you're listening to jazz, or the blues, or bluegrass, classical or baroque, you're right. They've actually Incorporated all those styles as some of the most talented and technically proficient musicians that have ever played rock and roll. The name Pink Floyd is actually taken from two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, which shows how deep their roots are there.

Great choice T. This is such a fantastic cut. Recently listened to this after losing a friend to the afterlife. It's a must to listen to this album from start to finish

New to your site but watching your reactions to the music I grew up with is heartwarming. Watch you appreciate it enough to respect and listen uninterrupted only by wonderful facial expressions. I only hope I looked as amazed when I heard Gilmour slide into those blues riffs and smile hugely during the magical sax trips .

The 2 bands I feel always take you on a journey; Pink Floyd and Tool. Two very different styles for sure but both are like an out of body experience!

the song is about sid barrett a former band member who went crazy. it was a salute to his talent

He didn't go crazy. He ended up as a casualty of the acid generation.

For me, their best songs are "Comfortably numb" (Live from Pulse album), "Echoes", "Time" (Live Pulse), "Hey you", "Shine on", "Sorrow"(Live Pulse) and "Dogs"

The girl totally got the "Syd" meaning of the song. And I am thankful that they posted this video on Mozart's birthday. It's the right way to celebrate music.

Hearing this song for the first time was an awakening. I first heard it in 1976, but the way the keyboard and guitar work off each other is so astoundingly beautiful that it almost makes me weep even after all these years. This is my favourite Pink Floyd song. Next one you should check out is Sheep from the Animals album. PEACE!

This song is perfection as is the whole album, not a weak second in it. I was always puzzled that people consider Dark Side of the Moon to be their best album. To me Wish you were here is unrivalled and anything else by Pink Floyd a distant second.
