sara obsessively denies her feelings towards him, we had two scenes with watery eyes full of sadness and sarah showing a sad and fake smile. Perhaps at this point she is beginning to recognize that she feels something for him besides friendship, perhaps she has been thinking all along that marriage and commitment imply the end of her freedom, independence and voice, but on the contrary john ends up being one of the few men who don't oppress her desires and struggles and only feed them, I hope that until the end she can see this.

Exactly!! In both episodes we saw her face when they talked about the engagement party....in the 3rd episode when Laszlo was talking about John she was looking at him with puppy eyes....Laszlo of course knows it and when he said 'I hope Violet loves you like we do' he looks at Sara....And then on episode 4 she is describing herself to him, she does want him but something stops her....Maybe is the whole thing about her freedom as you said but I also believe that it's got something to do with the trauma she has over her father....but I am not worried (frustrated yes! Very much so!) she will admit her feelings!!

The best scene in this episode. I feel sorry for both. John loves Sara desperately but doesn't oppress her by his feelings. And Sara can't let herself be happy. Listen how she barely could say "But not me". She wants to be but just can not. I hope it's changed like it was with Laszlo but in her case it will not be late.

Matthew Pittard she kind of confused me when she said ‘but not me’. I was like ‘wait so you’re STILL saying you don’t want to be with him?’: 🤦🏻‍♀️ anyone else feel This way? They’re both right. John is being mocked and as his friend she needed to point that out to Him, but at the same time you can’t go to someone and be like ‘that person is not right for you’ and NOT expect them to say ‘and who is, you?’.

Natalie Zayas-Bazan i think she reslly dosnt love him in thst way, or and probably more importantly she thinks she would loseneverything she has built if she became Mrs Sara Moore. Plus society at that time expected her to have kids and so forth. Contrast her independence with the scene you see not long after with the rich people stuffing their hand in that cake display.

Matthew Pittard i agree and disagree. She may not love him in that way because they’re old family friends, but also BECAUSE they’re old family friends, There’s a reason you see a different Sara alone with john, than when is everyone together. She can be vulnerable with him because he knows her since childhood. I also don’t think she would have to give anything up marrying him. I think the reason WHY John fell in love with her is because he saw how badass she is. He’s seeing her differently than the little girl he knew. You’re completely right, she’s not the girls stuffing their faces with cake and I think THATS WHY John loves her. I think if Sara thought john would hold her back in any way, she doesn’t know him as well as she thinks she does. I used this example in another thread but they’re kind of like Laurie and Amy from ‘little women’. Amy wanted to be her own woman, own her own children, have her own money, but In the time she lived, that wasn’t possible. So what do you do? Marry someone who isn’t going to do that to you. Enter Laurie. Laurie wouldn’t do that to Amy and john wouldn’t do that to Sara.

I just loved this scene and yet its also so heartbreaking too, because its so clear to me that Sara does love John too I think its that the last man she said "I love you" too was her father and look what happened there, in her mind it was not enough to keep her father from taking his own life, so now she probably feels like she'd rather love John from a distance than to lose him, however the problem with that is in the end she's only hurting herself and John, when all she has to do is just tell John that she's afraid of losing him, another man that she loves, its just so sad and disappointing

See Im not sure she does. I dont think she was ever into him that much. Perhaps its part of her personality. After all she knew he was serious when he proposed before. I think she likes the idea that she could marry him, but for that idea to keep real then he cant actually marry himself. THus with him marrying violet, she will do what she can to make sure that marriage wont happen/cant work.

Joshaunna Washington he will never be over her, especially now. The writers made a HUGE mistake having them sleep together. What did it accomplish? Nothing. It didn’t change things. Sara still couldn’t express herself and say what she wanted. It was a waste.

The total manipulating and spoiled elitist knows he really doesn't love her.. Now as for John, he has the best of both worlds. He keeps his integrity, and will marry into a privileged family and have a child. Sarah is the genuine one, exposes her heart and is dumped by John for the spoiled brat. WOW..... Agreed. I loved the first season because it was very much about early forensics, psychology, science and deduction in the vein of a true crime documentary. S2 had too much will-they-won't-they relationship drama that wasn't all that important to the overarching plot of kidnapping victims? And didn't even have a satisfying payoff at the end? I don't know, it feels like it lost its way a bit.

@@johnb503 I'm currently reading Angel of Darkness and...this season has the title and that's it. John and Sarah were never together (in the first book John mentions that when he once asked Sarah to marry him she dunked him in the Hudson river to snap him out of it), the second book is written from Stevie's perspective yet he's barely there in the show, Marcus doesn't die...very little is the same. Even the character interactions are different: within the first few chapters of Angel of Darkness, Sarah scales up the outside of Kriezler's house to be found by Stevie, she gets him and Cyrus to help break into John's flat where he's getting it on with a girl and Sarah's laughing at him, Stevie and Cyrus all but steal a cab to go pick up the Isaacsons who bicker the whole way back with the cabbie in the back convinced he's been abducted by lunatics...there's an element of intelligence but also friendship and comedy in their interactions. This season just got it all wrong, while the first season damn near nailed the first book plotwise and character wise.

While I kind of felt that way myself, the writers were between a rock and a hard place. They were renewed for s2 ON THE CONDITION john and Sara be a thing. Did the writers fully deliver on that? No, but it doesn’t change the fact that sadly people care more about john and Sara’s relationship than the crime aspect of the show. (I’m guilty of that too. I’m normally not good with this subject matter and only came back to s2 because of john and Sara)

I am not a fan of the "Historical" fiction genre. In fact when The Alienist season one first came up, I did not care at all about this series. I always thought that adding fiction to a Historical drama kinda ruined the purpose of the "Historical" part. Blame the Pandemic, the Quarantine, the stay-at-home boredom, whatever, one day I decided: " Well, shoot, I'm tired of Netflix, I'll give it a try. I AM IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTERS IN THIS SERIES!!! Each character is so unique, so complex, so out of cliche with the typical psychological crime drama. I can totally understand Sarah. It is not that she is in denial on her feelings toward John . I haven't seen season one yet (but you can bet I will), but from what I can gather, her father committed suicide. Plus add the conversation that she had with John on the Season Finale--that I just finished watching--for me to understand what is going in her mind. I don't want to spoil it, so I'm just going to say this: think about the kind of stress that the nature of their professions would bring to their family--their children--if they would make a life together. I think no other case brings it home more clearly than this one, that they are working on.

Season 2 ending Wrecked me. I wouldn't have mind if they went sperate ways because they wanted different things but adding that Violet is pregnant ahhh. I know it was his responsibility and obviously he needs to take it but I never liked a baby making decisions for adult (knowing it was because of their actions). It's like please don't add a baby to a story. I request all the writers it's like I wanna hate the baby which I can't and if the character goes against their wants for the baby I'm mad and if they don't think about the baby I think it's barbaric.

I love shows that are period dramas, and shows that have my favorite actor: Kyle MacLachlan. And Kyle MacLachlan films except, Showgirls (1995), and The Flintstones (1994). I can't stand his characters in those films. Though, he's became my biggest crush. I know Dune (1984) was an awful film. But Kyle MacLachlan is very handsome in that film. He looks like a 19th century aristocrat in that film. I'm a Kyle MacLachlan fan. And even a David Lynch fan.
