They were ready to give it a try. John would have even given up the idea of a family FOR HER. And in the end the choice was taken from them. She lost yet another person she loved and he is trapped in a loveless marriage. So damn sad. (and don't come @ me with the "she is a strong indipendent woman" bullshit cause STRONG INDIPENDENT WOMEN CAN HAVE A CAREER AND A HEALTHY LOVE STORY).

See, I don't think so. The ending is simply bittersweet is all. And honestly, we should have saw it coming when that woman invited John to have sex with him that one time. It caught me by surprise, but stayed consistent with the writing. What type of person would John be if he abandoned a child? How would the child turn out without a father? If the fiance hadn't become pregnant, John would have chosen Sara, but his fiance knew that, so got him to impregnate her so that she could trap him. Also, there is this whole theme of abandonment.

I think Violet is lying about the pregnancy let’s go over the facts shall we: she is extremely jealous of John’s relationship with Sara. She knew that John was going to leave her for Sarah so that’s why she pulled the pregnancy card. She knew what she was doing at her engagement party, besides physicians didn’t have the type of technology to tell you a lot or anything at all about pregnancy back then-John never once I said to Violet I love you or I want you he’s only ever said those to Sarah! if they do end up getting married it will lead to a resentful marriage and they will hate themselves and each other. I call bullshit on the pregnancy it was probably her uncle’s idea to trap John into marrying her and become a part of the family. I hope the writers fix this in season three not only for John because he’s gonna have a miserable future but for Sarah because they are the ones that are really have each other’s hearts and deserve each other. The writers also kind of screwed over Sarah because she had a real shot at being happy with John and now she’s left out in the cold.

Wheel Warrior she did it to herself. John put hisnheart out for Sara in season 1. Even as far back as the 4th episode of season 1. she either wouldnt or couldnt do anything about it. Time dosnt wait for people to make decisions ... it moves along.

Matthew Pittard sadly it’s true. Especially for men. (Sorry) I watched another show where a similar scenario happened, except it started as a teen soap so when the proposal happened, they were in college. The girl said ‘ not right now’ Because she wanted things to happen in their careers first. Men don’t hear ‘not right now’, they hear ‘no’. So what did he do? Move on with his life and when he returns to town with his new girlfriend, his old girlfriend is jealous AF. But that’s her own fault for turning down the proposal instead of saying yes and having a long engagement. It was a regular once a week series, not like the alienist, so eventually they do reunite, but not before having some pretty heavy fights similar to the engagement party. (He’s a writer and she threw his own books at his head. 😭) luckily the show also had a character that wasn’t either as dumb or prideful as violet. When the girlfriend figured out what was going on (sadly she was at the alter) she got the hell out of dodge. Violet sadly doesn’t have the self respect.

@@Nazaba09 THats to me where the ALienist fails. They COULD of really done a good job with Violet. I think if we added up how many minutes of screen time she got in Season 2. Would it before more than 8-9 in total? Violet could of been a fellow writer it the Times trying to make a way for herself and also have a career. She might of been the 2nd ever Female police officer. Instead we got what we .. well got. And that was the possible illegimiate daughter of the editor of a rival newspaper. and the damn dog... Because either of the above examples above would of given her character more believability. John would of likely because of his season one experience picked someone more .. akin? similar to Sara. Someone with a 'Sara streak'.. not sure what I want to call that. Violet as presented in season 2 wasnt that at all.. and while she was willing to be naughty, it just didnt click. I think that coems down to what she was as a character and more likely her little screentime.

Matthew Pittard I agree but I think the point was also to show john’s regression by his choice of women. Violet wasn’t going to stand up to him, she had to go to uncle/daddy and cry. I was under the impression that in the fight john and Sara had, when he said ‘I asked you to marry me. You said no if you recall’, I thought he meant jokingly in episode 104 or whatever it was and THEN I realized his declaration of Feelings for her in 1x10 was kind of a proposal. So either that’s what he meant, or he proposed somewhere in the time jump between season 1 and 2. You could also tell in season 1 john fell in love with Sara BECAUSE of how strong and capable she was. He didn’t want to change her or hold her back at all. So how does someone go from Sara to Violet? Utter devastation. Violet acted like she needed him, Sara didn’t. Violet is good for john’s ego. If we remember in s1 his brother had died and his fiancé had left him so he was sleeping with prostitutes but making them wear an engagement ring, leading me to believe it was a role play thing. All this to say violet couldn’t have been developed more because her neediness is what john needed. He wants to feel needed. Sara doesn’t need him. (Well she does, but she refuses to accept she needs anyone.) it’s why he gets so frustrated in the finale when she won’t say what she wants.

Season 1 ended with a death and not knowing the real motives of the killer or even getting justice for what he did, and we got a death and these unhappy two. I guess the writers wanna be somewhat more realistic in that not everything ends happily. Sometimes we don't get the answers we want. Sometimes people are in the wrong place at the wrong time. And sometimes we miss our ship.

I hope your right. It was wrong of the writer's & producers to string us all along like this, show the passion & love grow between them only to shatter it like that. Sarah was right...John wanted & deserved a child. She wanted John as well. John was more than willing to give up that possibility for Sarah. I know the 3rd book has not been written yet but that there has been lots of talk that once completed there will be a 3rd season but that there will a time jump. I honestly don’t think that the writers secluded their love-storyline. I think in the next season (If there is going to be one) theres going to be a plot twist regarding this storyline. Maybe the pregnancy was a lie all along or the baby/mother dies surprisingly. Who knows🤷🏽‍♀️ Sara and Johns chemistry is too good to end like that. Let me know what you think

We all know something bad will happen to change all three of their lives together or separately. Whether Violet is faking the pregnancy or not, Sarah and John continue the affair, or Sara ends up with his friend, kinda? I don't know. I agree the writers could've done a better job however, they hold the power. I suppose it's the little optimistic person in me that whispers this is all for their development and this was planned from the beginning. John and Sara will end up together in the end and for once in their life be happy. We can only speculate. Also, they've confirmed the third season?

Sara is too much of a morally correct character to have an affair with a married man. I think it would be great for her growth development, to find herself in a situation where she’s morally questioning herself because she’s doing something she swore she never do (and I don’t condone cheating for the record) but Sara is a bit of a Mary Sue. She sees everything in black and white. She needs to find herself In a situation of grey and an affair with john would be it. It’s wrong but john isn’t happy in his marriage and they’re the one each has wanted since the beginning.

I had hoped they'd end up together and they'd have to navigate through the series as a couple realizing how reality isn't their friend but also isn't their enemy. However, playing devil's advocate Sara did sleep with an engaged man and he had every chance to get out of the relationship before it all. I hope, if there is another season, that they highlight her into a more 'humanized' light because even I kind of got tired of the black and white attitude. As for John, just given him a cinnamon roll, lol.

Jennifer R. The vibe I got from Hearst is that he is not a man you want to cross, which is why I would excuse if john and Sara continued their relationship even after marrying violet. The way violet would go to him and complain about john’s attention to Sara, Hearst would respond in a way that almost made me feel like he’d have john and/or Sara taken out if he could. That’s the only ‘out’ I give john-breaking off the engagement to violet felt potentially dangerous. I do agree with you that Sara needs to see in less black and white. For a long time I compared her and laslo in their lack of feeling and emotion, but when I revisited s1 before s2 aired, laslo had AN ENTIRE EPISODE BREAKDOWN after Mary’s death. laslo actually lets himself feel. Sara doesn’t, and that’s why john get fed up and said ‘I will decide for both of us’. (Ironically, He actually didn’t. Violet did, but that’s still an issue that needs to Explored. With the exception of the fight at the engagement party and getting mad at her over the phone JOHN HAS NO BACKBONE. I get it, he wants to be a gentlemen, but you’re being jerked around like a beaten dog, dude!)

If this was my story, I'd love for my audience to pick it apart and get into it. However, apart from the distraction, I agree. I can see both the good and bad with violet but in truth, she did see this coming. Hence why Hearst is probably appearing more than before. She made use of what she had and being a beautiful woman she knows how to manipulate. However, I will have to play devil's advocate with Sara because was raised to be a man by her father and with how harsh it was back then. You kinda have to give and take with flaws with them. Also yes, the writers have really made Hearst a pretty dark character. I'm just sad that I'm expecting something really bad to happen to one or both of them to force that change, you know? More than just a 'surprise, I'm preggo'. I'm not an expert writer but if they are following the stereotypical rise and fall method then it's leading. The question is, what do you think they'll do?

I knew it was not going to happen, and in a way it's realistic because (especially in that period) things never ended up with an happy ever after. They love each other like nobody else could, they are the right person for each other, they are meant to be but time is against them. She was just at the beginning of her career and didn't want a child (like the serie many many times make us understand through hers and Libby's dialogues) and John in the other hand was ready to have a family and wanted it, he was willing to give it up for her but it didn't felt right. MY HEART IS BROKEN but... I don't know, i just knew it was going to end up like this and... I don't know

I think this shows that at least he felt a bit sorry for Violet during these times having a child out of wedlock and not having the dad in the picture as a high society woman would've ruined her completely. It's bitter sweet John and Sara love each other but they're not right for each other as they want completely different things and it would be selfish for any of them to hold back the other person and would cause resentment. It's just hard to see I love a good happy ending, but ultimately it makes sense why the writers choose to go down this route
