An old recording of the Anacreotic song I've had lying around on my drive. Please tell me if you know who the singers are!
Also, I have the sheet music for this if anyone is interested!

No you are not singing a traditional English drinking song - you are only using the tune. Maybe you could sing and harmonise The Star Spangled Banner as the first rendition. So much better than the usually awful wittering and wailing of the usual soloists. Only Whitney Houston could get away singing round the actual tune

Yes, Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the Star Stangled Banner with the melody of this song in mind. Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

So, basically, we've been singing praise to the hermaphrodite Greek god of wine and revelry...huh... I've got a few cousin that converted to Mormonism that aren't going to be too happy to hear that...and a number of cousins back in Oklahoma and Texas that are of the type of Southern Baptists that insist Jesus and the disciples drank "grape juice and not 'wine'" that are going to be equally as displeased, ... ...and it kind of vindicates the Jev. Witnesses in my family. I can't wait for the next family reunion... I'll be sure to bring my vid recorder to that one, when I tell them all about it.

@RadioactivFly
@RadioactivFly 9 жыл бұрын
ditogeezdee Back when the song was written in the late 1700s, the British accent sounded radically different from what it sounds like now. All the Rs were pronounced much like in modern American and Irish accents. Although the rolled R had disappeared from normal speech well over a hundred years before, it was still common to hear it in songs. This continued up until the early 20th century: If you listen to old recordings of WWI-era songs such as "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" or "Over There," you'll hear the trilled R.

The anthem itself was written by Francis Scott Key, but was set to music by John Stafford Smith some time later. The poem by Scott Key itself is original, though the music isn't. Despite this I'm fine with this song being used as the music. In my opinion it seems fitting that a former British colony uses a British tune in its national anthem, and pretty funny that a drinking tune of all things was chosen.
