RE: Wanderer army strength - as you saw, especially at this low-tech early date you can win battles while *substantially* outnumbered, and the game is not great at predicting this (even with the changes to accounting for men at arms strength.) Right now, levies in your opponents' armies are basically almost purely detrimental as they will be killed easily causing routs (within reason.) Also, the commander advantage modifier is *much* stronger now so pay attention to commander advantage if you have a chance. Once you get up to > 1000 units you'll be a powerhouse, and with 2000-3000 good men at arms + supporting camp buildings you can fight large kingdoms or small empires (though keep in mind that they can hire wanderer mercs too if they have gold, though they'll probably be a lot less optimized.) One thing that you might want to pick up relatively early is a siege unit regiment (luckily you started as a culture with tech to do so.) RE: Next steps - investing in your camp (especially campfire, pavilion, and proving grounds) will make your army *much* stronger. There's a semi-common event while traveling that lets you upgrade your pavilion for reduced cost, but you have to have enough gold on hand to take advantage of it (e.g. to go from level 1-2 pavilion normally cost 200 gold, but only costs 100 gold via the event.) RE: Succession - if you're going to pick another wanderer, you might want to try out one of the other camp purposes to focus on things other than military (though I suppose that might be dictated a bit by the character you land on.)

Maybe further upgrade your men at arms if possible or ask for more men at arms from your patrons. Hope you take the barbers tent for some income if possible.
