I've just finished Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. It's a fantasy story about an orc named Viv who opens a coffee shop in a place where no one knows what coffee even is and all the friends she meets along the way. It's the most wholesome book I think I've ever read! There's no heavy world building to it, which is what I find daunting about reading fantasy. It's just a really good time! Hiiiiiighly reccomend it!! 😁

Matrix and Cerse sound very good. Added to my TBR. If you like female forward historical fiction. Nothing beats Earths Children. Ayla is a human raised by Neanderthals during the ice age. It’s a story of trying to make yourself fit into a society that doesn’t come naturally to you. It’s about family, love and independence. It’s a lovely coming of age story with a very different setting.

Thank you for listing your books in the description. The books I read in January were The Woman in the Library (good but weak ending), The Invited (really good and ghosts are involved) and The Queen of Tearling (beginning of fantasy series that kept me enthralled). I am currently reading How Far the Light Reaches (non-fiction), A Glimmer of Death (cozy mystery), and The Rose Code (historical fiction). I’m enjoying all three of these. And, by the way, I read Circe several years ago and loved it. Listening to you makes me want to read it again.

I'm with you on The Maidens, I didn't love it. The Silent Patient is a bit better but not by much. I actually am a psychologist as well, so whenever I read books with a therapist as a lead I have high hopes. Alex's books are hardly accurate when it comes to therapist presentation, unfortunately. I'm currently reading As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow - you might like it! Also, if you haven't tried any of Fredrik Backman's books yet, you also might enjoy his humor and writing. He's my favorite adult fiction writer.

A nice range there! Being dyslexic and struggling with lyrical, descriptive writing, I was hesitant about Circe. But i found the audiobook reader was THE PERFECT Circe and agree that it’s a beautiful book, defo stuck with me. I really recommend the book True Crime Story by Joseph Knox. I picked it up in Waterstones on a whim and it is a thriller written in such a clever way. 12th century nuns? Yup, I'm definitely here for that. I like the sound of Idol as well; I'm a sucker for a 'Whose truth is, y'know, true?' type of book. I've just finished The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. I did enjoy it but it's a very long read with a very slow start. That's a deliberate structural decision by the author, for various reasons which I won't go on about here, but it did make the first couple of hundred pages harder work than I'd have liked.

Hi Lucy, I’d recommend Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. It’s set in 1950s Mexico, a young woman goes to visit her cousin at her cousin’s new husbands family home in the mountains, after her cousin sends a mysterious letter saying her husband is trying to poison her. Very gothic, spooky and sexy, I loved it!

If anyone's looking for another Dark Academia style book I enjoyed The Bellwether Revivals by Benjamin Wood. Blurb below. Bright, bookish Oscar Lowe has grown to love the quiet routine of his life as a care assistant at a Cambridge nursing home, until the fateful day when he is lured into King's College chapel by the otherworldly sound of an organ. There he meets and falls in love with Iris Bellwether and her privileged, eccentric clique, led by her brother Eden. A troubled but charismatic music prodigy, Eden convinces his sister and their friends to participate in a series of disturbing experiments. However, as the line between genius and madness begins to blur, Oscar fears that danger could await them all ...

@@LucyJaneWood wuhuuuuu she answers. World, look, Lucy answered to mere peasant. Also: die younread "the Strange case of the Alchemist's daughter"? It is very weird, but i thought you might like it, while reading it. Secret community, myth and mystery, strong women and an gothic feel

Good GRIEF, I truly hated The Maidens and for a long time I felt like I was the only one. Poor writing, gaping plot holes, completely unlikely situations, sloppy ending, etc.

Right there with you! I gave it 3 stars but that was probably generous 🥲

I’m in the minority but I absolutely hated the silent patient. No redeeming qualities for me, so will be interested to hear your opinion if you do decide to read it.

After hearing your thoughts on The Maidens I feel compelled to copy and paste my Goodreads review. SPOILER ALERT!!! “Who ends a book by suddenly revealing a pedophilic relationship as the main plot twist? There's a lot to unpack there, that the author did NOT. This book just made me feel icky. The protagonist is stalked by two men and, at least in the case with Henry, it doesn't seem to be justified by the plot? Like what was the purpose of that? Also what the fuck is Michaelides' deal with Freud. Perhaps if you are writing not one, but TWO, books about psychotherapists you should refrain from basing your entire psycholoqical interpretation on Freud. There's a big emphasis on family relations and dvnamics in this book and it just felt hollow and misguided.”

Certainly not wrong 🥲 Justice for the word 'icky' which should be used more often x
