Hamlet (Mel Gibson) contemplates whether it is better to fight through the troubles of this life or drift into eternal sleep.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Franco Zeffirelli directs his third Shakespeare adaptation (after Romeo and Juliet and Otello) with this film version of the tragedy Hamlet. The titular prince of Denmark (Mel Gibson), returns home to his family's castle of Elsinore after years of attending school in Germany to find out his father has died and his uncle Claudius (Alan Bates) is the new king. To make matters worse, Claudius has married Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude (Glenn Close), whom he has unusually strong feelings for. Hamlet is visited by his father's ghost (Paul Scofield), who asks him to seek revenge for his murder. In order to find out who the real killer is, Hamlet stages a theatrical scene resembling his father's death. Claudius is upset by the production and leaves to arrange for Hamlet's murder. In the ensuing confusion, Hamlet accidentally kills Polonious (Ian Holm) instead of Claudius; Hamlet's lover, Ophelia (Helena Bonham Carter), goes mad and commits suicide; and eventually Hamlet and Claudius both meet their fate.

Damn I've seen so many Hamlets...I never thought Mel Gibson of all people would deliver one of, if not my most, favorite(s). He's deep, he's angry, he's confused, he's scared...as someone who used to be suicidal I relate the most to his. I also love the set the up here, contemplating suicide in the tomb of his ancestors, wishing to be among them. It's brilliant to me. This version of Hamlet is what made me start to appreciate Shakespeare.

Yeah, I was also suicidal for a long time, and came very, very close to shooting my head clean off with my father's shotgun when I was 18 and withdrawing from painkillers and heroin for the first time(well, the first time it was _really_ bad at least.) That, and the fact that I had no money, no job, my mom had gotten off the Dilaudid, fentanyl, and levorphanol that she was on for so long, and where my addiction began, I had just spent the entire summer in my room getting high instead of going out with friends every night like I'd normally do, and lastly, I'd just left my first semester of college on medical leave(due to depression, though the main problem was my addiction), as I had completely stopped going to classes. I still have this page bookmarked in my copy of Hamlet(I went through a big Shakespeare phase after either the second or third time I got clean, and just started devouring books now that my head was clear and I could concentrate, and also because when you come off heroin, which numbs your emotions, those emotions come back like a freight train, allowing you to get emotionally invested in every book you read, or movie you watch, etc. I kid you not I was crying at kids shows and Disney movies.) My original high school year book quote was, "...and thus does conscience make cowards of us all," until my ninth grade teacher was going through the quotes before they were sent in, and of course recognized it. He checked on me, and said that it would be inappropriate to use that quote. So my quote got changed to the much less significant, "We're all mad here" by the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. Okay, I'm rambling. Lol. I'm done now.

My only beef is that he's way too old(or at least looks way too old) to be playing Hamlet(who I think was (possibly) 16 years old, though some argue he was thirty years old based on one line, thought that brings up significant problems, and in my opinion doesn't really make sense.)

Yeah, back in 1990 I was one of those affected snobs who reacted to the release of this "Hamlet" with, "Mel GIBSON?? What next, Stallone as Julius Caesar? ("Yo, Brutus!") Well, color me humbled, because Gibson is very credible as the Bard's unbalanced prince. Whether you're a fan of his or not, there's no doubt the guy has talent. Teaming with Franco Zeffirelli-who made ‘Romeo and Juliet’ so relatable for us hormonal teens in 1968- was the icing on the cake.

He very much out performed (in my opinion) Branagh in every fashion, and although it's a personal preference, the more casual less formal nature of his acting makes this Hamlet feel more human and more aching and relateable in his pain than that of Olivier.

I won't claim to be a snob, but I was horrified, too - the guy from Lethal Weapon (which I loved), as *Hamlet*??? No flippin' way - they're miscasting him because of his popularity, and it'll suck. And then I saw it - to date, the most genuine, realistic Hamlet I've ever seen. Gibson doesn't intone those phrases - he bleeds them out of his heart. I was wrong, before I saw it - and I doubt that anyone will ever see it bettered.

Though I don't wander into the darkness of this story often...it is always THIS interpretation that I am drawn to. Though I have seen this story told by many different actors...it is this version that satiates my soul. Granted...there are other actors that delivered these same lines in much more dramatic manor...but few, if any, have delivered said lines with as much passion and conviction. Nor had anyone previous accomplished making The Bard's story so relatable...so...touch-able. Though Mr. Gibson might not be the greatest actor we have ever seen...though he's had his moments...he seems here to have completely embodied the essence of this particular character. Does he seem crazy? Oh, without a doubt (a tribute to his skill as an actor). Does he seem driven toward greater aspirations? You tell me.... At the same time...does he OVER-play the role? No. He genuinely FEELS like he IS Hamlet. For that, I must give him Kudos.

I admit, I haven't seen classics with Barrymore, etc. But, Mel Gibson delivers those DIFFICULT lines in a conversational manner so the words have meaning. Even obscure words we no longer use make sense because of his impeccable delivery. Unlike Branagh who performs in his lofty-more-british-than-you-dumb-american style.Yeah, I'm American, so slow it down and INTERPRET the lines like a real actor. Mel's had some problems personally, but this is the finest performance of his career.

I’ve seen/heard all the others...Olivier, Burton, Branaugh, Tennant, Scott, Cumberbatch, McKellan and a few more...this is the only one that feels real to me. I can totally see a lost & confused person who suicidal go to their family grave and think about life and death, wanting to sleep with them but figuring out the will is not there. It happens in real life. This is the only Hamlet to me.

I am completely agree with you Taylor Melton. MEL GIBSON is the only one actor that really LIVES the character. I have watched so many versions of Hamlet in theatre and cinema since more that 50 years ago, (I am a no professional actor in Spain), Hamlet is my favorite play and the most important in the World Literature Drama. I think that Hamlet in this monologue wanted to communicate all of his pain towards life, which can be seen very well through his gestures, expressions ecc... . But the most important action is when he collapsed on one of the graves, a sign of approaching non-been, therefore to death. Mel Gibson has interpreted this very well, so congratulations!!!!

Leathal Weapon to this is called "range"! Was blown away back in the day! Strangely enough, it was his contemplating suicide scene in Leathal Weapon that got him considered for this role in the first place.

Gibson's good lucks may have distracted from his ability as an actor, but he's a capable one. People forget that Gibson's first several years in Hollywood were not successful (until 'Leathal Weapon'). It was probably part of why he made 'Beyond Thunderdome'. After that initial period, Gibson was more or less in action/thrillers, so that again tended to distract from his acting reputation.

Mel Gibson, you were great in this. However, Mel Brooks was hilarious in that skit scene in "To Be Or Not To Be", the movie. That classic WWII comedy film!!
