In Europe even if you have an iPhone, you simply use WhatsApp. It's almost rude to initiate a discussion with someone you meet for the first time using Apple messages which may or may not revert to SMS depending on the other person's device. You simply don't do it. The fact that iMessage and FaceTime are considered 'lock-in' cultural phenomena in the US is the most head-scratching thing for us.

Just seems so much easier just to buy an iPhone as android doesn't really offer much different, iPhone and Samsung are so similar these days. I don't know anyone only messaging on imessage so I'm sticking with my Samsung and then giving apple ago because I have been using Samsung phones for 6 years and it feels boring but safe at the same time as I'm so use to how my android functions even though its probably not that different. I might get the iPhone 20 just so I can say to my sister that my iPhone is better 😂 Samsung and Apple are pretty much the same price so its fifty fifty. Enjoying my s23 ultra which isn't much better than my s21 plus but you live and learn I guess. Iphone 6 was the last iPhone I owned and I loved that thing. When I got my Samsung galaxy s8 I was like wow that screen is so damn beautiful and modern. I had iPhone 6 then S8, s10plus, s21plus, s23ultra. So I'm probably due to go back to apple as smasung isn't as unique as they use to be.

If you live in a more rural place, people could care less about what phone you used. i think the power of apple is iphone + mac together. teenagers are fickle by nature. if you give them a better camera with a powerful laptop, they will leave the ecosystem. that is a hard battle though. Nothing Chat is a cool strategy, i am not sure if it will work or not because think from a teenager's perspective- maybe he/she is not caught using an iphone because of "nothing chat" for 2-3 days/weeks. what is the end game here? eventually people will know and when they know the humiliation will be same...its just delaying the inevitable....and nothing phone 2 is not cheap also...so why go through the hassle and abuse when you are paying so much....the only solution is to ignore it completely....and honestly nothing is an enthusiast brand...people who buy it know what they are getting into....us market is the literally bossed by apple...if apple really has 87% of the the young masses, then it is better not to fight...let it become 99%...americans love to be special...as much as human nature, people will not like it if everyone use the same phone...that's when you pitch in with something different...till then entering usa market is not necessary....just keep a brief presence...that's it...

The end-game is to make communicaiton better between Apple and Android users, since Apple won't do anything. That's what Nothing is trying to accomplish with this. Nothing Phone 2 is still cheaper than the cheapest iPhone in the 15 series. It's not good if the entirety of teens in the US to use iMessage, that could lead to privacy invasion and other unencryption problems... A startup company that promotes a unique design, and most importantly, has their userbase, not their money, as their main reason for what they do is just what the US needs. A break between the two smartphone manufacturers and coming in the middle at the same time. The iPhone is pretty clearly inferior in a lot of ways to competitors, but for Macs, they've genuinely been a competitive product for power and build quality even disregarding the ecosystem. I'm a CS student, and I would've bought a MacBook for college if I could've ensured all of the required engineering/CS software would work on it (it wouldn't so I stuck with windows). But yeah, I don't think the Mac loyalty has anywhere near the ubiquity of the iPhone loyalty.

Main thing that happened is that the US market was stuck in SMS for far longer than the rest of the world, so the iPhone never saw a reason to implement a proprietary protocol until much later, by then WhatsApp, Viber and others had already grown a huge user base in multiple platforms, but in the US Apple basically led them from plain SMS to iMessage seamlessly to the point there are many that don't even realize that iMessage is something completely different under the hood to the old sms 'texting'.

Here in Ecuador (probably also Latin America as a whole), WhatsApp is the go to app even if you do have an iPhone. iPhones are viewed as a “rich person’s phone” because if you were to buy a current mode one here (even sometimes a previous model) it would cost almost double what it costs in the states so having one makes it seem like you have money but that’s not always the case. Please explain this to me. If there is a group of friends consisting of 6 people and 5 of them use an iPhone but the 6th uses an Android, will the 5 people create an iMessage group leaving out the 6th friend? I mean that is just simply rude. If you have true friends, they would use the service (WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram etc.) that enables them to communicate with you. It is as simple as that.
@Mark-zj9my

At the same time, other chat services must make their service quality, features etc. as good as iMessage so that iPhone owners won't miss iMessage and would switch between the apps comfortably.

I find the whole iMessage thing so weird. In the UK majority of people have iPhones. Most of the people I know have an iPhone, but I have NEVER been in a iMessage group chat. We use WhatsApp or Snapchat by default. I think we do this because eventually you’re going to want to add someone to the chat that doesn’t have an iPhone.

Have a strong feeling that Apple will easily place some security measures to prevent them from being able to do this in the future, and possibly sue Sunbird/Nothing. Even Apple requiring face/touch ID per user session would cause the entire infrastructure to crumble. As Marques mentioned, the security implications are also huge. Not a great idea to do this from the Nothing team in my opinion. If I were the CEO, I would've focused on making it the smartphone of choice in the Asian markets, which Apple seems to have less of a hold on.

That's going to change anyway because the European Union is going to force those big companies to offer interoperability so that instant messaging providers need to be able to talk with each other. I am not sure what that means in terms of supported features but for simple media and text messages there are going to break some walls for sure

Theres also laws in Canada that are going to be coming out as well. Bill C244 just made its way into the second reading of the senate, which means it is within a hairs distance of being passed as an actual law across the entirety of Canada. Bill C294 is also very close. C244 is essentially a right to repair law. C294 is the interoperability law. This will mean that apples parts pairing will become illegal in Canada.
