This is wonderful! Has so many benefits beyond spiccato. Learning a lot from you even after 29 years as a professional 2nd violinist. Thank you!

Thank you. Very didactic and intelligent lession. The castle may be beautiful but even more the violin with its splendid varnish!

These videos are the best. You are not just showing how to do it but how to practice and how to understand the movements as well!

The only thing is that the right arm does work a little differently in the off the string strokes. If you look carefully, when Nathan compares them side by side, the off the string spiccatto uses more of the arm motion and less wrist and forearm. It happens naturally for him, but I believe it's important for learning purposes to make a note of this as well.

Excellent video. Having returned home after some excessive traveling in Europe and NY, I find myself with 14 days of self isolation (i.e., quarantine) to ensure I am healthy and don’t infect any of my colleagues at the office. That means I’ve got time on my hands for violin practice. Employing on-the-string bow strokes to ensure spiccato can work is extremely helpful. Thanks much for the guidance!

And you keep up trying to learn how to play it right. I strongly suggest you keep up practicing your bowing and keep up watching more tutorial videos from this great Soloist Nathan Cole. Seriously, no BS here.

Thanks Nathan! Great spicatto videos! They're helping my playing a lot. I find this a really difficult stroke to sound right.

Thank you for this video! I've been trying to play some more advanced pieces, but both my teacher and I know that my spicatto is really holding me back. I'll give this a try and employ the strategies you've mentioned.

thanks Nathan, this is helpful! Could you please explain how to spiccato(or sautille?) on Wieniawski's Scherzo and Tarantella which is extremely fast with lots of shifting and string crossing

Great video as usual. Lots of great tips suitable even for high level players. Can I ask you a related question? I always found difficult to go from a spiccato stroke to an "on the string" one (for instance, a longer note after a spiccato passage, e.g. the quarter notes after the sixteenths in Mendelssohn's Midnight's Scherzo, or the slurred sixteenths after the dotted eights in Mozart's Zauberflöte...I hope I made it clear) because the inertia of the bounce of the last upbow spiccato note continues on the next note which shouldn't bounce (I guess the problem can be reduced to: how to start a long note from off the string ;) ). Do you perhaps have some advice on that? Thank you very much in advance

Thank you for this video! Question - my bow seems really bouncy. I have trouble getting control over that, especially with fast, off-the-string bow strokes. Is there a way I can get control over that?
