My grandfather, a Captian and an aviator (from TBDs, through P2Vs and P3s), in the Navy WW2-late 1970s, was at this time, serving as a senior ASW planning director; This was his bread and butter. So, Thank you for posting this vid! It has given me some marginal insight into some of the problems he dealt with and context for his remaining ephemera. Cheers!

I was aircrew on the Grumman S2D and E, out of Key West and Quonset Point RI. R1820 9 cylinder radials are the reason I have ringing in my ears today at age 76. The visceral experience and thrill of these aircraft defy my explanation. On long hops on carrier quals the pilots would let me fly the plane. Trap landings and cat shots off the wasp and intrepid and later the lexington. Some things never leave you!

This has brought back so many memories from watching this for the first time at my "A" school in Millington then on to JAX! The P-3 Orion did many ASW, Drug Interdiction and Counter Terrorism missions throughout it's time in service!

Can't say I remember this film, but I do remember NATTC Millington/NAS Memphis, A-FUN and AO 'A' school. I ended up as a P-3 aircrewman, back when P-3s had AOs (aka aft observers)!

I was really surprised to see they used footage of the USS Scorpion (SSN-589), since she was lost with all hands the year before.

A nice revisit to the Navy I knew when I got out in '69. After boot and "A" School, I spent duration at the ASW Tactical School at D&S Piers Norfolk, where I, a TD2, and my shipmates maintained the Lockheed Electronics 14A6 tactical warfare simulator. Some of the best years of my life and now, 56 years later, I still regret I didn't re-up after Uncle Sam gave me a generous offer of a $19K VRB and TD1 after "B" School. I do wish that given the Lockheed origin of this film, they didn't film a tie-in to the huge simulator that we had at D&S. I'm willing to bet that a lot of the guys I see in this film spent many hours playing war games in my building. And like many others, I vividly recall the loss of Scorpion as many in my command had served with members of her lost crew. Thanks Periscope!

I was offered 23K VRB. Aircrew on the S2 D and E. VS 30 and VS 31. The reason I did not re up was there were far too many assholes with one more chevron dedicated to making your life miserable.

I served at NAS Cubi Point for 3 years where we had daily P3 Orion flights and those are not them, the P3 Orion had a big dome on the top above the fuselage

That destroyer at 24:26 is USS Frank Evans - she and an Australian carrier smacked into each other the same year this film was released, splitting DD-754 in half.

ASW was already quite well developed in the late 60's. The methods today remain largely the same, primarily the speed of communication has improved, sensors have been refined, mission response time shortened and the weapons used have become more effective.

A little bit better. I was an OT3, rode along in a P3C out of Keflavik Ice. Above the Arctic Circle, got our Blue Noses, and pictures of a Soviet Navsurf. Passive Sonar Tech in 1975-76. Was a tedious job, until we found targets. Fair winds and following seas Shipmates. OT3 GTGibbs God Bless and keep the Crew of the Scorpion.

It's interesting that they pronounced buoy as boy, the way it's pronounced in British English and not as boo-ee, like it's said in US English.
