In To Catch a Spy: The Art of Counterintelligence, James M. Olson, former chief of CIA counterintelligence, offers a wake-up call for the American public and also a guide for how our country can do a better job of protecting its national security and trade secrets.
Olson takes the reader into the arcane world of counterintelligence as he lived it during his thirty-year career in the CIA. After an overview of what the Chinese, Russian, and Cuban spy services are doing to the United States, he explains the nitty-gritty of the principles and methods of counterintelligence.

As an bioarchaeologost and medical manual therapist, I can tell you this about tightening perineal tissues and polygraphs. First, the polygraphers are aware of these techniques to defeat the poly. Second, as in childbirth and other forms of physical exertion, how you breath, behavior of internal sphincters, and behavior of the nervous system are affected by a couple of physical adaptations. Tightening and loosening of the perineal tissues to include the sphincter, interrupt normal and natural nervous system behavior in the body. We have sphincters that tighten and loosen from the entrance, extending to the exit of the body. The nervous system participates in how and when these muscle tissues loosen and tighten. When someone feels morally conflicted when they lie, the nervous system will tighten (this is the oversimplified perspective). Often in the area of the stomach and diagram. Tightening the perineum and anus causes a natural loosening of the sphincters proximal to the tension. So, for example, the diaghram and stomach and throat sphincters will loosen, thus indicating honesty. Third, raising and lowering the pitch of the voice can also manipulate polygraph outcomes. We see this in childbirth. Women using lower more guteral pitches when groaning during childbirth facilitate opening of the internal sphincters the entire length of the body. Higher pitches voices, groans, etc. tighten these sphincters throughout the body. We've all seem people that feel conflicted about lying take on a tense, higher pitched voice when under stress...sort of choking up if you will. Controlling the perineal tissues along with voice pitch will obfuscate these nervous system behaviors.... YOUR WELCOME🤫

The last question asking what major is good for CI, I would add the civilian side of CI would be found in something like Wake Forest MS in Enterprise Risk Management.

What can you tell us about J. Edgar Hoover's "COUNTER INTELLIGENCE PROGRAM" 1956-1971? What expectations did Hoover have in such a counter intelligence program that was aimed at American citizens?

Just a correction at 3:35, it's not "Rick Hansen", it's "Robert Hanssen" who lived in Vienna, VA.

Probably conflated-understandably-with Rick Ames. Two names of perpetual infamy in intelligence circles.

Related to the famous Olson that was killed because of the LSD experiments back then? Or a different Olson family?

James should not beat himself up over Cuba doubles. They live in a closed security state, second only to the DPRK. The stronger the security the better support provided to counterespionage.
