To Crop or Not to Crop???

We're going to address this touchy subject one last time for those who feel the need to shame PitBulls and American Bully owners for EAR CROPPING. Some feel it's bad and most don't understand that it also does serve a purpose outside of aesthetics and for those who think it's for fighting reasons. Let's be clear about one thing Pits and American Bullies aren't the only dogs that get their ears cropped...

Just an opinion but it's not acceptable it's now how they were born. And a lot of they do it he does it. My bully has erect years from wearing a cone as a pup. Her ears stand up so no ear issues but i have had people make fun of her because that is not bully ear style and theybsay she isnt bully. They are not cropped but stand up. The same people who say cropping prevent ear infections, mites etc make fun of her standing up ears which i happen to like. Her daughter has natural rose ears . People will ask why i didn't get them cropped. I see a lot of crops that look fugly, terrible, like ragged looking like they did them at home or too short and some really good ones. You can't win.

We have 3 American bullies, and we got all their ears crops. Personally for us yes it's more for the looks. They are put to sleep and given medication for any pain afterwards. It is done very humanely. Our dogs have always healed within 2 weeks sometimes less. It's not everyone cup of tea but again everyone is different.

@@americanstaffordshire8109 I do think you can still but your time is very limited. I say that because the cartilage in the dogs ears may already be built but all dogs are different. I would recommend talking to your vet about it, not all vets are pro crop but I would still just call and ask for advice. It’s free and because you have a pit the ears would be quick and easy.

This goes for both of y’all, you can still crop a dogs ears even after the cartilage is built but it may not heal properly and will cause pain to your dog. You do it early because it’s basically just a piece of empty skin but definitely call your vets and ask them what you can do.

Veterinarian technician almost thirty years cropped ears myself remember what it used to be like I hope that the process is much fun they are now those dogs were in excruciating pain the older it is the hotter it is and do not judge it to be like it's getting your ears pierced it is not nor is it like getting a nipple pierced that's it hurts. I honestly love the cropped style but that’s not the big reason I’d crop. It doesn’t hurt the dog and can help your dog in the long run if you take care of them. Just like he said we don’t judge people when they brake horses tails to get that perfect high tail so why judge something that isn’t close to the pain a horse would feel? If they did a bad cropping job then call them out but other then that you have no reason to judge.

I'm not always for or always against cropping. I wouldn't own a Doberman without cropped ears and a docked tail. It's what gives the Doberman the regal appearance they are known for. If I had a dog that worked as a livestock guardian, I would crop its ears. So I'd crop a dog's ears for the appearance and for a functional benefit. This is something that I'm open about, and what somebody else thinks isn't going to change the way I look at ear cropping. Now, what I don't do is make up excuses to justify my decision in regards to my dog. Why would I? It's my dog and my decision. Ear mites are easily cured, and in my opinion, ear mites are a poor excuse to crop a dog's ears. Same thing as with ear infections. Just be honest and say that you like how the dog's ears look cropped. While the American pit bull terrier can be shown with their ears cropped or not. However, saying that American bullies are supposed to be pit bulls on steroids, as if it means anything in regards to the cropping of American bully ears. My point is that his statement about pitbulls on steroids and bully ears holds little weight. Here's why, when you look at some of the most well-known and influential American pit bull terriers throughout the breed's history. You'll see just as many, if not more, dogs that don't have cropped ears as there are dogs that do. Take some time to check out some footage from a few different ADBA shows and see how many dogs have cropped ears and how many don't. Then check out some ABKC shows, and you'll see that the majority of bullies have cropped ears. Some breeds look better with their ears cropped. Cropping a puppy's ears does cause them some discomfort and pain. Accidents do happen, and ears do get messed up. Some working dogs are at risk of having an ear ripped off. It's extremely rare for a dog to have their ears cropped to better their health. 97% of dogs that get their ears cropped have them cropped because the owner likes the way that it makes the dog look.

This is a very sensitive subject in the bully/pit bull community and I hate that it’s like this!
