This week, conservator Verena Kotonski takes a really long look at the Sherborne Cartonnage to assess what state it's in, how it got to be in that condition and what methods she may be able to use to stabilize it without causing any damage to it. Effectively, Verena's job this week is to try to solve a 3D puzzle with no instruction manual. However, never fear! While Verena doesn't have an instruction manual, she does have a hoover. Keep your eyes peeled, things are about to get microscopically detailed.
To be honest we have no idea how many episodes this series will have, each month the cartonnage has posed new 'challenges'. But it's also revealed more about life and death in Ancient Egypt. So we hope you will follow along as an already long project gets made even longer by unexpected global hand break turns.
The conservation and the making of this film was generously sponsored by the John S Cohen Foundation.

I don't want to seem ungrateful for what we get, but more material, more often pretty please :) I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I could watch an hour or two of this conservation and commentary. Similiar maybe to Baumgartner Restoration channel.

As an egyptian, I feel way more confident into the care the British Museum put into those items than my own birth country. thank you for your work, dedication and keeping those precious artefacts safe from the corruption and lack of means. I hope to see more of the work/art of Mrs Kotonski. Sorry for my broken english ;)

@@teddysalad8227 not for now, they would be sold on the black market or left To rot. We had a lot of scandal and thousand of pieces are lost To private collection, at least the british museum keep them safe. Your comment is well intentionned but uneducated about the sad reality of the country. Little story : the government once restaured an antic with... concrete...we are not ready for respecting them as much as the occident does. The cairo museum is notorious for keeping artefact on the floor and "loosing" them.

I have a similar feeling towards the items from India. I don’t trust the government or organizations in India to be capable of being able to safely take care of them. At least for the time being.

I love how John Taylor feels the need to explain to Verena Kotonski--a conservator--the basics of how a cartonnage is made. She has to bite her tongue and say "Oh Gosh, really?!" Besides that, fantastic video.

To me, it appears as if some mummies are positioned with their arms folded across their chests. When the mummies are stored upright, they might slump down and their arms fall beside their bodies.

How much risk is there taking up the cartonnage fibers while vacuuming?
@britishmuseum
@britishmuseum 3 жыл бұрын
From Verena: Thank you for your comment. Yes, there is a risk of accidentally picking up fibres or small fragments during cleaning. To prevent this, we assess the surface condition very carefully in advance of any cleaning treatment and adjust the method accordingly. Usually, we use a very soft brush to ensure only dust or any other “unwanted” material (e.g. insect frass) gets lifted off the surface. In addition, we use a conservation grade vacuum cleaner on a very low suction setting. Also, the nozzle gets covered with a fine netting that allows us to monitor what has been taken up and retrieve any fibres/fragments if necessary. Often we use magnification while cleaning to ensure we become aware of any unexpected changes to the surface condition and adjust the treatment if necessary. There are instances where we might decide not to use a netting over the nozzle, e.g. when removing a larger amounts of frass or debris, or when working away from the original surface. On these occasions, the conservator will be extra vigilant in monitoring the object’s surface during the cleaning.

@Vanessa Santos yes. Firstly youtube audiences mostly reject the idea that youtube is for advertisement of advertisements, as you'll see most in the rest of the videos comments will reflect as such. Secondly its a missed oppertunity to actually get people to watch your content. Whats egregious for a museum is to somehow care more about site hits to business owned platforms for whatever greedy reason over the publics education worldwide. I mean if nothing else a stupid idea from a boomer marketing executive.
