I think this descision by the government is short-sighted. Just changing the name of city from Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram will not remove the colonial mindset from people. If the government really wants to take initiative to make people free from this mindset, then large scale reforms need to take place in the education system. Our country's education's core focus should not be on just academics, but development of a child's talents and skills. If they are able to take decisions independently, then only they can break free from this cycle of colonialism, which is to serve for others.

This decision to change the name seems to be with very little thought. The name Vijaya Puram sounds very generic and sounds like some place under the south Indian Dynasties in the 14th century. A more special name should have been given for a place that is so significant in our freedom struggle. The name Port Blair has been synonymous with the INA and Subhash Chandra Bose, so just erasing that history, and giving it name will not solve any problems.
