'To grab our tribal lands...': ITLF leaders explain conflict between Kukis, Meitei in Manipur

Muan Tombing, the Secretary of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), amid protests, unrest, and violence in Manipur's hill areas, emphasized the need to take to the streets as "otherwise our voices are not heard."
"We have been sending memorandams to the Centre, we have been sending memorandams to the state government, but nothing has been settled so far," Tombing said during a one-on-one with EastMojo.
"In the name of forest protection, the government has issued orders for eviction. Hence, the people are panicking and we have no option but to protest to show our dissatisfaction with the government," Pagin Haokip, President of the ITLF said, before accusing the government of "trying to grab our tribal lands."

Meiteis cant buy STs land but STs can buy Meitei’s land! Is this statement correct? If it is,then i think Meiteis also might have insecurities of STs taking away their lands. They can centrally seek ST reservation(if they actually deserve it),but within state,they can segregate seats on the basis of what they have in present,amongst various communities with equitable distribution. Every community can ask for protection laws where one community cant buy land or property from others. From what i can see,there is a lot of insecurities out there,Meiteis aswell as the current STs. Nobody can be blamed for having it,but they could have talked their way out. Everyone wants betterment for a community and nobody can be blamed for that. But the betterment of your community shouldnt be disadvantageous for some other. People should understand this,put their toes in their rivals shoes and then,think what is correct and what isnt.

Why kukis always want separation and violence in everything everytime when there's raise issue instead of peaceful discussion for solution to the problems? It's nothing to do with meiteis or one specific ethnicity. Reset your mindset first. Implementing the law to law abiding area is not bad thing. Everybody should follow law even meiteis. Naga shouldn't be in neutral. They r the one that will be affected the most in the future. Meitei has 40 members MLA, naga/kuki together have only 20. Almost All jobs of Manipur, both private and state government are reserved by meitei. Now after getting all those jobs, benefits etc.. They seek Land for their own. All these conflicts happen because of greed of one community. Greed of one community cause havoc in a peaceful state. No greed, Peace prevails. For better solution, manipur should be divided into three administrative States. Kuki state, meitei(kangla) state and Naga state. So that, no community will disturb each other again.

The biggest obstacle to ending animosity between 2 fighting groups is when any or both of the parties assume a "holier than thou" attitude. But if sense were to prevail it would become clearer that it takes two hands to clap and therefore, this competition of who is fairer or more morally upright seems rather kiddish. It is becoming clearer that if the fight is to continue none of the parties are ready to go down easily and therefore, losses will be huge. Drumbeating nationalism and jingoism leads to wars and we are witnessing that right now. I sincerely hope that as people of the 21st century we do not fall prey to ideas and notions that are out of sync with the times we live in. Down with tribalism, nationalism and all sorts of ism that though unites people under an umbrella only do so for the worse. Instead nurture your individualism and ask yourself what is it that you want to achieve in life. I am sure most of you will deny violence. All the literature and arts of the past and even some of the present media have glorified a genre of bravery and sacrifice, that almost always involves a resort to violence and we are totally not at fault for having a rather inconsistent notion of greatness. Let's not glorify war or violence for any cause. It is high time we practice this and leave behind this education for our posterity. Examples of non-violent methods of achieving our wants are many. As a Meitei, what I understand from this conflict is that the angst against Meitei community in general amongst the other communities in Manipur have been many and that needed a spark for an outlet. I can see that as the majority group we need listening to the other communities of Manipur from a perspective of addressing all the pain areas and not with an attitude of outsmarting. This is a prerequisite if we are to hold the land together. But above all, if we truly agree that all communities are stakeholders of the land that is Manipur, then all talks and negotiations we engage in should be without conditionalities. But in my prayers I hope that no division of land happens and that we become more sensible along with the times, give up our tribalism and all isms together and evolve our society. Let's just lead simple, normal lives. At times like these I would have hoped the local media played a positive role. Sadly adding fuel to fire is how they sustain themselves. May they evolve too!
