‘The kids keep asking about their papa’: In Manipur, a Kuki-Meitei couple separated by conflict

It’s been three months since Jotin Laishram Singh last met his wife Ngahoichong Haokip and two children.
Haokip, now eight months pregnant, had to leave the couple’s house in Imphal and move to a relief camp in Kangpokpi in May amid a threat of targeted violence. She was, after all, a Kuki woman married to a Meitei man, living in an area dominated by Meiteis.
“The children keep asking ‘when will we get to meet papa?’” says Haokip.
Meanwhile, in Imphal, Singh says, “She is pregnant. I keep thinking about what condition she would be in, and about my children.”

Actually they were separated for their own awareness...some kukis women who were married a meiteis were brutally raped and killed...but we don't killed those meiteis who were married to a kuki women in our areas...they were given freedom and we accepted them as one of our community members... that's all..😢

Very sad to hear her story. My aunt is also Kuki woman. She has two daughters and a son. She is living happily and we never tell her in a communal way. And there are around 8 Kuki woman only in my village. They are staying with their husbands happily. Seperating among them is their decision but the ground reality is that nobody harm to any Kuki woman in my community who got married to our community. We feel they are also same like us.

Example tonsing hangsing, 7 years old boy, who got injury was taken to hospital by his meitei mother and meitei aunt... But the so called women organisation meira paibis burnt them alive inside the ambulance... Meiteis women are not even safe who married to kukis
