Right on Tom! I've been hearing and seeing lately about some new evidence that has been unearthed recently regarding Vikings visiting Nova Scotia during the Viking age. We know they were in Newfoundland at Lanse aux Meadows, so it makes perfect sense to me that they would have traveled a bit further south to Nova Scotia. Maybe a Viking connection to the Oak Island mystery as well. All the best Tom and I will see you on the next one!

Tom, I see your fire burning, both doors are open and the window behind you is open, the warm air is leaving the warm wood exhaust gas, so it can't get Cimbrer Camp warm at all. Tom, there is a double pipe as a chimney pipe, works like a heat exchanger, the warm used exhaust gas flows in the inner pipe from the Cimbrer Camp to the outside through the chimney, warming the fire with unused fresh air that flows into the Cimbrer Camp through the outer pipe, the window remains closed.

Back during the Renaissance era of the Victorian Age, the revival of Norse Lore begat Wagner's Ring opera. Characters in the dramatization in the opera wore horned helmets and the horned helmet rage began. Archaeological evidence was created to verify it's authenticity and the ruse was bought and paid for. The Celts had ritual horned bronze helmets, but it was proven to be ineffective for battle. It is still cold were I am as well little snow and windy, always like this before our rainy Season. Thinking about Horned Helmets and If there were any, like you said someone of high standard and I think for Ceremonial purposes like burials or maybe a Priest during sacrifice to the gods or safe journey at sea. The few horned helmets there were worn, was for ceremonial purposes only. Horned helmets are impractical in actual combat as the whole purpose of the shape of the helmet is to deflect the attacks, with horns it only gives something for the sword, axe or mace to hook on to and make more damage to the defender than protection.

I love the opening of the video where you burst through the doors of Cimbrer Camp with the horned helmet in, lol! Very funny. From my understanding, and I am no expert, it’s thought that some of the horned images are as you said representations of Odin 16:37 and the “horns” are actually Hugnin (sp.?) and Munin. It’s speculated that these few depictions of horned individuals represent a ritual or spiritual communication going on. I certainly agree that horned helmets would be impractical in battles and that probably only the wealthy could afford helmets (swords too). That was interesting! So only one viking helmet has ever been found? I guess for all we know that may be a rare design? And there seems to be a lot of suggestions in artwork that some may have had horns. Vikings were definitely very artistic. Love those Celtic helmets. Great video Tom!

Hej Tom! I love the style of helmet u have! I think that paired with the chain mail over the lower face and neck makes a scary figure, plus a good Dane axe of course! I am of the opinion too that horns were for drinking mead and ceremony. Keep up the good work! Skål bror

well Tom it's another wonderful day at Cimbrer camp with you and Cornelius and sitting here having coffee with you. the vikings were probably the most feared warriors in history and maybe they had the horns on the helmet and maybe not but you got to admit, those horned helmets looked pretty awesome in the artwork of vikings and added to they're reputation but yes the horns would probably not be a good thing in battle. less chance of a glancing blow to the head. Tom, much enjoyed vid. Interesting on the helmets. If they did wesr horned helmets when killed in action the next in line may have hot it. It is common symbol of leadership. I'm sure not all had them to begin with. I tell you about a dream someday and then years later the reality of it. All good. We had snow this week as well. Of course, if the helmets were all rusty, that could explain why so few helmets survived, and why the rich added panels of silver/gold decoration. On the other hand, I don't think they would be completely rusty as they could protect them with grease, but they would certainly be tarnished and not shiny and polished.

having done some blacksmithing, i would hazard to think that many of the helms and such would have been just forge black. cleaned with sand or a cloth to get the soot off.

I can't help but wonder if vikings would do something to treat their helmets to prevent corrosion. I'm virtually certain they would put some type of tallow on their blades to prevent rust. These were expensive belongings to a viking, and they probably had pride in ownership.

There is a piece of horse harness found in Sweden that show the Viksø helmets being worn. I always look at other cultures when thinking about things within my own or another culture. The Native Americans certainly wore head dresses with Buffalo horns, so it's not impossible that for ritual purposes or just to scare the enemy Vikings had these 'hats' or helmets. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, we're on the same page with that thought.

I would have to believe that a helmet would be a valuable piece of gear and they would want to protect it from rust that would degrade it (just like a sword). I would have coated it with oil or tallow and heated it over a fire to polymerize the fat to produce a protective covering and temper the metal (heat to about 400°F) It would become black and non-reflective.

Excellent historical synopsys of that particular piece of armor. Good sound information watching your Channel! Question: Do you know if the design of the helmet was influenced at all by the Romans? Your ancestors traded all over Europe and even deep into Eastern Europe during the Early Middle Ages... I was just curious if the design was indigenous to the Nordic region or if there was some influence from other cultures. You can definitely see Roman influence of armor in Saxon design and Norman design, but the helmets you displayed seem distinct and unique - if anything they seem to be reminiscent of Spartan design, although probably not likely. Good question David 😉 and hard to tell 🤔 When the Vikings came to the British isle the Romans had left centuries before and the influence of them would have been limited. My believe is that … like the ornaments that I told about in my previous video … the Norse people had their own way of doing things and probably the helmets had an unique design that was typically for that region 🇩🇰🇸🇪🇳🇴💪🏻 Tom

Hi Tom, great video as always. I have to say I think you're wrong about the finish on metal helmets. Although the vikings probably would not have obsessively polished them I do not thing they would have been allowed to rust. A rusty helmet is a compromised helmet in terms of structural integrity and as the only thing that's protecting your head from an axe, you really don't want that. Warriors and soldiers of every era are and were taught and expected to look after their equipment. All it would really take to protect a steel or iron helmet from rust is a regular light coating of beeswax or tallow.

Another option for preserving the steel is to heat up and rub beeswax or linseed oil in so it burns off. That leaves a nice blackened finish.

Not, but probability is not the last word or fact, However , maybe before battle, by the king or leader, , ceremonies I would say probably yes , it's an impressive sight, that's why people like to see it and the idea still prevails, Although the bronze age helmets are something different, with opening at the end and no pointed tip, I would consider they were not representing a weapon or an aggressive pose, And therefore a real mistery,

It's just the most famous (and only) helmet findings together with the gjermundbu helmet from Norway, from that age. It's 95 years BEFORE the viking age started though. So it's even earlier.
