Yep. I remember landing on the Mun before they added landing legs. You had to use the static fins. One of the most fun things I did in KSP. I could not return, though.

old ksp fans unite :) back then you either go to low orbit and then burn when mun appears on horizon ...or you launch vertically up when Mun is on top of VAB
