Very enjoyable and amusing story. The humour is very entertaining. Amelia is just great. Love her character! Just one thing I feel I should point out: one cannot sit opposite each other in a Hansom cab. A Hansom is a carriage where the cabdriver sits raised above the semi-open passenger compartment which is designed to hold two people sitting side by side facing forward. It's more likely you meant a Hackney coach/cab. It's also a hire carriage but usually of the four-wheeled, four-seated kind. Sorry, couldn't quite silence the history nerd in me. As much as I try to soothe him when reading/listening to historically inspired romances he sometimes needs to put in his tuppence...

Not a bad story, in parts quite funny. My only negative comment is that the word 'tone' is not the right one. The word is 'ton' meaning being the top one hundred in the social escalon.

The first book To Catch a Spinster was great because I knew about the characters Olivia and Nathaniel. There was charming moments about their childhood and better developed moments with family. I also had a very clear image of the first couple but not the second. This one focuses heavily on Jameson and Amelia's manipulation of each other. I'm having trouble with finishing it, but sometimes a series is good despite a single book.

@sandrapicton634911 ай бұрын
Since you could not have ben alive in the 1800's when the book is set you cannot possibly have any idea of the way the upper classes sounded then. The nearest would be the way Queen Elizabeth ll spoke at the beginning of her reign. This narrator is apalling. The book is set in the early 1800's, known as the Regency era.

@MeganBryceAuthor4 жыл бұрын
I always wondered too. Still wondering...
@arallen84 жыл бұрын
It's "ton"(tun) as in 2000 lbs.! They were originally called "The 2000"! Because they were the riches and highest level of society . There was only around 2000 of them, (around 2000 titles although some of them had multiple titles) that's a small amount compared to the rest of the people. Later they were named "The Ton" because is sounded better and more lofty than calling themselves the 2000. Hence a ton weighs 2000 lbs! And they used pounds and not dollar!

If we're going down the rabbit hole... It's from the French, le bon ton and while wikipedia says it's pronounced like it is in French, I've never heard a regency romance pronounce it like that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ton_(le_bon_ton)

Terrible narrator again - why doesn't she narrate American books if she is American, or Australian ones if she is Australian instead of strangling the script - but I have reduced the agony by speeding up the playback speed to 1.5 as I would like to hear the story.
@Hy-Brasil2 жыл бұрын
Nope. Can't get past the voice. It's like an older marry poppins. why are they always choosing old women to voice young women? and the dialogue is tedious. why can't people copy dickens instead of Austen? Austen has her moments but lord, these people over do it with the flowery dialogue.
@Lindamaine2 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not the narrators who sound like old Mary Poppins usually are younger women putting on an old snooty voice. I was annoyed once and started looking them up. My only guess is that they do it to set the narrator voice apart from the younger character voices. I get that, but I think they usually go overboard. Who wants their elderly Aunt Mabel to narrate a steamy love scene? Ew. And for some reason which eludes me, some make the romantic characters sound old and jowly, too. I don't get why these people get hired.

Why does the narrator use a 1920s BBC voice it sounds ridiculous and has nothing to do with the period the book is set and most annoying 😠
@sandrapicton634911 ай бұрын
Not even as good as a 1920's BBC voice, just her idea of how upper class English is/was spoken, because she is either American or Australian and doesn't really know, and certainly has had no training in how to ennunciate English correctly.

Lady Amelia Delaney is known for her sharp tongue, no-nonsense attitude, and a rather sizable fortune. Numerous suitors have tried to win her hand-- for the money, for the challenge, and for a rather unfortunate bet. She knows the unflattering reasons behind her numerous proposals; can she ever accept that a man would want to marry her just for herself? Jameson Pendrake is a devil-may-care dandy who cares for naught but fun and fashion. But behind his laughing green eyes lies a dark history, and he calls off his wedding because of his fear of repeating the past. He can not simply give up on the idea of marriage; a wife is the best defense against the yearly crop of scheming mothers and their frilly daughters. But to allay his fears he needs a woman strong enough to laugh in the face of his past. A woman unflappable, unwavering, and unbroken. He knows just the woman. The trick, it seems, is in getting her to accept.

I can not like the female character she is very rude and talks to other people like they are little children and bosses into everyones business with out bothering to ask if they wont her advice or help. Using the worst event of someones life just to get a silly chit out of a hole is unforgivable and not something any one who is a friend would do. In reality such a woman would be cut direct and be barred from his household.
